The Confederate Battle Flag: Heritage or Hate?

A debate has long been raging in pockets of the South over what the Confederate battle flag symbolizes and whether it belongs in public spaces. The Charleston, S.C., shootings have reignited the issue.

    @@rova1637 If that was true then America would have allowed the south to secede without a civil war. The first amendment was written in response to oppression. When dictators take over the first thing they do is silence any voice exposing their corruption. You're twisting the meaning of the first amendment to justify hate, and a symbol of hate, and rebellion.

    The confederate flag is based on a heritage that symbolizes a new way of life that the people loved. If they aren't from the south, those people shouldn't even get a say in what happens to the flag. It's the south flag, not the north. Its our life, not theirs.

    Morioh Cho if we’re going to say that a flag that is mainly used for heritage and southern pride is racist because a small group of nutcases who don’t even have 5,000 people in their group flys it, then by that logic the American flag is racist because they use that more than the confederate flag. If the south had won the war slavery would've persisted. Until anyone can make an argument against that, you're gonna have to expect black folks to take issue with that flag. I know the history of the southern rebellion against government overreach and I completely understand the heritage argument. Still, if the south had won the war, slavery would've persisted. And that is a FACT. In all of the southern states' articles of succession, the abolition of slavery was listed as a reason for declaring war. And black people will NEVER ignore that no matter how much people scream about heritage.

  • @FMichael1970

    The vast majority of people who fly the "Confederate flag" are doing so as a symbol of the southern United States and its culture and way of life, not as a sign of support for the resumption of the Civil War or the reintroduction of slavery. I use the term "Confederate flag" in quotes because the flag you usually see was never the national flag of the Confederate States of America, it was a battle flag used by its soldiers during the U.S. Civil War. The 13-star on a St. Andrew's saltire emblem was a part of two versions of the CSA national flag, but it wasn't the flag by itself. More than 90 percent of the people who fought under the Confederate flag, in any of its versions, never owned a single slave. Slavery was a large part of what precipitated the Civil War, but not the only part, and most of the issues between the northern and southern factions of the country had nothing to do with most of the people who did the fighting. The average Southerner in 1861-65 only knew that a hostile army had invaded his homeland, so he took up arms to defend it. To them, it was no different than King George III sending soldiers against his own subjects in 1776. Anytime someone engages me in a discussion of the Civil War, I always say it was a pointless conflict initiated by hotheaded elites on both sides who refused to look at the big picture. Slavery was on its way out regardless of the outcome, because it was economically unviable. Even Brazil, a country that was even more agrarian than the antebellum South, did away with it by 1888. The invention of the cotton gin in 1793 gave U.S. slavery a new lease on life, but it was ephermal. By 1861, a lot of the huge Southern plantations were barely making ends meet; the "free" labor cost so much to feed, clothe, and house, and the slaves only worked as hard as they had to, because there was no incentive for them to excel. In 1880, the future President Woodrow Wilson, a native of Virginia, said that he loved the South, but rejoiced in the failure of the Confederacy, because an independent CSA would have failed if it had tried to survive on the slave-system economy. Which it stubbornly would have done, having fought a war to perpetuate it. An independent CSA would have been an economic train wreck, with no way to dig out of the hole since it would also be an international pariah state for still permitting slavery. Anyway, not to digress too much. The Confederate battle flag represents the people of the South and their traditions and culture. It belongs to the people who fought under it, to protect their homes and families, and those who honor their legacy today. It doesn't belong to the KKK, skinheads, or other latter-day racist groups who have co-opted it for their own use. Those who choose to display it as a symbol of their Southern heritage should be free to do so, just as Hindus and Buddhists still display the swastika as a part of their culture, despite the Nazis' misuse of it for their own ends.

    Austin Palmour I get what you are saying. A black man can be racist too. Racism is a hatred condition of the heart. However, we must not forget that the Democrats of the south were white supremacists. Alexander Stephens, the VP of the CSA, said that the cornerstone of the confederacy was the subordinate position of the black man as a slave to the White man and called that the cornerstone of the Confederacy. Also evolution was gaining in popularity at that time and it was based on racism and anti- religion. Many in the southern states were against secession and the CSA, so why do some so vehemently defend it today over 150 years later?

How can that be true if the confederacy stood for the opposite of everything America is today? In other words if Confederate soldiers saw what America is today they would be disgusted. So how can they be considered veterans that fought for a country if they lost the battle and the country today does not support any of their ideals? That is the same as if Germans said the Nazi flag is their heritage. They lost the war and became a footnote in history but I wouldn't say Nazis are their heritage lol its a thing that happened.

    They were all Americans, Confederates and Union, brothers that toor our nation apart for a brief period. The Union won and if people want to raise a flag because they are proud of their roots they should who cares the South lost. People say the flag and proud southerners are full of hate because their ancestors (and mine) once fought for something bad. The United States stole the Native Americans land and killed many of them which is something bad, should we not fly Ole Glory because our ancestors killed the natives and stole their land? The KKK and Neo Nazis are giving the Southern cross a bad with hate and they are not true sons of the south if they create a reason for people to hate that flag. All nations and cultures have bad history but never be ashamed of what your fore fathers did.

    +Michael McBrye "if people want to raise a flag because they are proud of their roots they should who cares the South lost" - It isn't just that the South lost. If their cause had been noble, there might be a different sentiment today. But, because they expressly seceded and fought in the defense of their right to black slavery, well... that's awfully offensive and unrepresentative of blacks today. Not flying Ole Glory wouldn't make any sense. The country still exists. The lands are still stripped from the native peoples. The CSA no longer exists. And it never stood for anything except the right to enslave.

    Here’s a 20 year olds opinion. Take it how you want. So I’m a collateral descendant of the VP of the C.S.A (Alexander H. Stephens.) I just wanna say this, I DON’T hate black. Slavery was wrong and evil to do. But I do wave my confederate flag because us Southerners are a proud bunch. I also know other people wave the flag for the opposite; for hate and discrimination. I and many others are NOT them. We love people for what they have inside and not for what color they are. I just want y’all to know that they’re are good southerners out there who just want to love on people and be great stewards to God. The SC church shooting, Jim Crow laws, pro-slave and hateful, ugly people are not all of us; just the worst of us.

    This flag may be a symbol of heritage and southern pride but it is a battle flag. It's entire being was made by a Confederate general named something Lee during the civil war. It is the flag that said "let us keep our slaves". I've done my research on the civil war. It was fought over political power but a large reason the south started such a fuss was because they wanted to keep slavery legal. This flag is racist. It doesn't just represent racism, it MEANS racism.

  • @lrjxe9895
    @lrjxe98955 жыл бұрын

    I feel like most people who see the Confederate Battle Flag just see it and assume it’s racist, you see, the thing is, you can hate me, but it’s just a symbol, as slavery is abolished, it’s a symbol meaning nothing but South. I feel most people grew up just to see the Confederate flag as a “hate” symbol. You see, Britain had slaves for a really long time, but we all love to see a Union Jack. Let’s say you make a flag to conquer a country. You make the flag stand for your kingdom, and you make it stand for your religion maybe, you conquer the country, but then you get overtaken. So now, this other religion came in, now the flag’s religious part does not mean anything, but your flag only means your kingdom. Just think of that as the Confederate Union. Make up and argument.

    Yes, the British ran the one of the largest slave trading operations in human history. The wealth of Britain was 100% based in slavery. But is it very silly to compare the Union Jack with the Confederate flag. The Confederate was used as a symbol of the only society in human history that actually went to war to defend the disgusting practice of slavery. The Union Jack was never used in this at all. The Union Jack means the UK. The Confederate just means a symbol of hate used by traitors who wanted to continue to abuse defenceless people as if it was their God given right. The Confederate flag is an abomination.

    I see the battle flag of Northern Virginia as a symbol that you do not want to live in America, where slavery is abolished, but in the confederacy where slavery was allowed. Your predecessors flew this flag first at Fort Sumpter to signify that they were seceding from the union. This flag is a symbol of secession and treason. If you fly it today, I don't see you as a US citizen. Slavery isn't abolished. We may have passed the 13th amendment years ago, but the war on drugs was admitted to be a tactic to imprison predominantly black youth to 1. take away their vote and 2. put them in a locked space and extract free labor to make our license plates. The confederacy was formed SOLELY for the "states' right to own slaves." Just think of that as the confederate union.

    the United States flag was flown during racism LONG before the Confederate flag and if it's all about the KKK the original intention of the KKK was for the Confederate leaders to join together, sort of like a club, until racist pricks showed up and took over. but back to the U.S. flag, it was "racist" Toward the native Americans, blacks in the colonial period, and Europeans also in the colonial period. So ask the question again, is it hate or is it heritage? if the Confederate flag is banned from the USA completely. I will never hang up the US flag again because it represents racism to if everyone talks like that.

I may not agree with some of the beliefs that some American's may have, but it is their right to be able to have that belief. If my feelings get hurt over what a group or individual says, so be it. I have the right to disagree, and the ABILITY to not associate with that group or individual. Banning the Confederate Flag over feelings is not only opening the door to more emotion motivating bans of symbols, but is unconstitutional in my opinion.
