The Conclusion Of The Model Y RWD

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After testing this Model Y RWD with the BYD pack, it might be the best one for most people. Still, many more people buy the Long Range model. What do you think?

    I've had my Model Y AWD for almost 2 years now. I love it so much, its become a major thing in my life. A bit of an obsession almost. Its just perfect, no problems at all, just charge it and that's it! The software updates make it a better car with new features every few months. Never buying a new gas car again.

    I have the same 2022 Model Y RWD and love it, absolutely not missing anything in terms of performance or range. 250 real world summer range and maybe 230 winter. No concerns about charging to 100%. Tons of miles for even the heaviest commuter. Performance is incredible, in fact it's so good that I drive it in 'chill' mode almost exclusively and it still feels WAY faster than my 1.9 TDI diesel....and with off-peak charging at 2p a mile, it's CHEAP. The TDI only gets used as a workhorse vehicle now.

    I totally agree with your philosophy about RWD and less range. Most people never need AWD and they don't use more range than standard. Long range results in more battery cells which means more weight and lower efficiency. Two motors also increase the weight and reduce efficiency. I have a new Model 3 RWD with LFP batteries and almost always get the rated range because I drive sensibly and live in California where it is not so cold.

  • @RoamingNorway

    @RoamingNorway

    I'm not sure less range in day-to-day driving is that big of a deal for this comparison. If it's day-to-day driving then most people aren't going through much of their battery. But it is nice that LFP batteries just charge them full whenever you can and you're good to go. I really would want AWD in cold climates though, I've been in situations multiple times where AWD made things much easier.

    Do not charge any battery always to 100%, neither NCM or LFP. Not even Tesla says to charge them to 100%, they say the BMS needs that, not the battery. Tesla advises to charge to 80%. 100% does not kill any battery, but simply adds a few % deg over the years.

    Absolutely everyone (except you) is getting the whole "it's recommended to charge the lfp battery to 100%" wrong. It is not recommended for longevity, but rather because the BMS cannot interpret correctly the state of charge in the battery. In fact, the battery is degrading almost the same as it does with NCM chemistry. People need to understand that. If you want a long life for your batteries, charge at home with 5-7-11 kw and only charge at superchargers when absolutely needed.

  • @RoamingNorway

    When I got my RWD Y, LFP battery, the car (on the screen) said to keep daily charge limit to 100% and charge the car to 100% AT LEAST once a week. Now in the car app, it says to keep the charge limit to 100% (notice the ‘daily’ seems to have been dropped) and it says charge to 100% once a week. (Again, the AT LEAST once a week has been changed to just once a week). It’s dumb though because if your charge limit is 100%, whenever you plug it in to charge it’ll go to 100%. It’s a freakin’ daily limit… Also, Tesla employees adamantly contradict each other about what is best for this car. No wonder people are confused.

    @@RoamingNorway One other question I have, perhaps it's a topic you could cover in a video: what incentives does the Norwegian government provide the likes of Tesla, Ionity and others to do such extensive rollouts of charging points? Tax incentives/ credits, direct subsidies? Are charging points prioritised for planning applications? Does a company require planning permission to install chargers once you plan to install above X amount of chargers? How is the grid developed to cope with the load? What are the legalities around public liability if a EV owner does not have off-street parking, can they run a cable to their car from their home or can they install a charge point outside their house on the footpath/sidewalk without insuring for public liability? Is there a government minister who is specifically responsible for EV infrastructure rollout and incentives? I live in the Republic of Ireland, our EV charging infrastructure is incredibly poor for one of the 'wealthiest' countries in the world. I have so much admiration for the charging infrastructure and how the rollout is managed in Norway. I love the content by the way, keep up the great work. I will visit Norway next year. The battery gross capacity of the long range is 82 kWh. 80% of it gives you 65.6 kWmh of gross capacity. You can fill the 80% of the battery in 30-35 minutes. To get the gross 60 kWh battery fully charged you must wait ... at least 1 hour? Well, that's were the long range fits the bill.

    It is a wrong assumption that the LR Model Y hat less range because you can load it to 95 or even 100% right before the start of the trip (just don't do it if you park your car for longer) . The consecutive charges on a longer trip are only 80% because it takes very long to charge to 100%. But the same is true for the SR Model Y and the 80% charge on the SR gives you a shorter range than on the LR.

  • @RoamingNorway

    @RoamingNorway

    The RWD charges to 100% where the LR would be at about 80-90%. It’s both faster charging, and has a smaller battery to fill up. But I can definitely see your point, especially when you are very down low.

    In fact, if the battery holds around 25 degrees after charging 100 % an NMC battery has the same degradation as an LFP battery. It almost never gets warmer than that in the Nordics.👍👍👍 If the temperature is 40-50 degrees on the battery, then an NMC goes down in performance faster.👎👎👎

    I think you're comparing the two cars incorrectly and I think the AWD has way more advantages over the RWD, including the "faster" charging speed. The only advantage I see for the RWD is just the LFP battery which I think it needs more data to actually show whether it's degradation performance lives up to its claims. You see, the SR RWD as 60 kWh gross capacity with 57 kWh net. Now, the LR AWD has a usable capacity (net) of 75 kWh. When charging to 80% you're actually riding on 60 kWh net capacity. You're having all that RWD battery (gross capacity) at your disposal. So when you want to compare your RWD with the AWD, you should compare it as you charge your RWD everytime to 100%, while the AWD all the time to 80%. The AWD charges in 28-33 minutes (warm-cold weather) from 10 to 80%, while the RWD charges in 40 minutes to 10-99% and 48 minutes to 10-100%. Efficiency wise, the two cars aren't that far apart provided you're going at a relatively constant speed on a highway. I'm taking into account highway speeds, as hilly terrain and slow speeds would put my Kona 64 kWh on par or even performing better than your RWD with regards to efficiency numbers. In summary, I think that the AWD provides a bit more value than the RWD simply because of - better range overall - AWD system, particularly useful in conditions like you drove in your video - better regenerative power - better overall power, particularly seen when you load up the car on trips - efficiency when correctly taken into account kWh instead of battery percentages.
