It’s not so much that you wouldn’t have to worry - by large, they’d be envious because they are in the districts where the kids are raised _dreaming_ of becoming a career/tribute. It wouldn’t really be a situation where there is a sense of relief or “living in peace”, but more so a letdown if they’re not the one going in because they view it as doing the best thing that they can ever do with their life: serve Panem via The Hunger Games. It’s honorable in their minds, and there is even greater honor and pride they so happen to win. If anything, I’d imagine that there would be more of an issue deciding who will take those spots first because the majority would be clamoring to have that spot to be apart of history.

I think a lot like a lot a lot about poor glimmer playing up her good looks to get sponsors not knowing what it would do her to if she did win. The detail with the trafficing of the victors is genuinely one of the most horrific details about any dystopia ya or not. The fact that even after they win the games after they perform like the capital wants them to they still don't own their bodies simply because they're from the district and the people from the capitol don't see them as people

Especially considering that, when Katniss asked Haymitch if what happened to Finnick happened to him, Haymitch says no, that they killed everyone he loved to serve as a warning and brings up Cashmere of all people. Haymitch is described as attractive in youth, so it would not be surprising if he did have the same fate as Finnick but was probably too rebellious and it would probably be too much of a hassle to break him instead gojg "Here, he's young and attractive, If you are young and attractive and don't do what we say, just look at what happened to him!" Haymitch bringing up Cashmere along with Finnick implies she was also trafficked-and he knew! And considering that Cashmere and Glimmer have the same vibe, same would surely happen to her.

At 30:41 , I think the significance of the dried fruit isn't that he took some for himself, it's that he arrogantly believed there would be whatever food he wanted back at the cornucopia. Even if he had survived his encounter with Katniss, the Careers were all screwed if they all decided to pack raisins instead of say, bread or beef jerky. Katniss was definitely expecting some seasoned beef or something in Marvel's pocket, but he picked RAISINS as the contingency food to carry on his person in the Games.

Ah finally, somebody else who can't stop thinking about the Careers. I can't stop wondering about whether or not their most mean spirited scenes, such as the ones they seem to be having fun murdering their contestants, were an act for the Capitol to not know how terrified they might've been during some of those kills. Naturally, they would not be as scared as the less prepared Tributes would be and probably knew how to dehumanize their opponents in their minds so the act of killing in cold blood wouldn't affect them as much, but they were also children. I can't stop thinking about how much Clove's death and the mutt attack affected Cato, how scared and alone he seemed to be in the books in the final day of the Games. Cato and Clove also seem to be a narrative foil to Peeta and Katniss, whether you interpret their dynamic as romantic or platonic, and it just makes both of their deaths weight a lot on me. Despite it all, they were just teenagers Also, I'm glad you mentioned how wrong it is for Glimmer to be described as sexy and attractive. This is not a criticism towards Suzanne's writing, but rather an acknowledgement of what she was trying to achieve with that wording. I agree with you: had Glimmer been victorious, she would've suffered the same fate as Finnick and would've been sex trafficked if or once she was over 16, which I believe is the age of consent in Panem. If she would not oblige, she would end up just like Johanna One interesting aspect about the Careers is how they are, in a way, protecting the rest of the children in their districts. Being born in District 1, 2 or even 4 and not engaging in career training is a lot safer because, if your name is drawn, the odds are someone way more prepared than you will volunteer. The Careers would be seen as heros, even martyrs, for protecting the other children in a way. The other districts children don't have the "privilege" of being protected like that

Probably 14 finnick won and was than used as snows gift to his higher echelon of supporters. I wouldn’t say any younger because they’re always distraught when a tribute is chosen at 12 and there’s not much proof it’s older either, in fact since the districts are so poor and portly maintained and administer I imagine much of Panem doesn’t have much regulation on that sort of thing but keep with the tradition of marriage for social and financial protection

The argument about Cato being the type of potential revolutionary hero that Snow would expect, and therefore easily knows how to control/ brains is very fascinating. Especially considering Snow’s prior friendship with Sejanus Plinth, also from District 2. Cato and Sejanus have very different personalities but they do have a few things in common. Beside their district and having the odds in their favour (Mr Plinth being able to buy Sejanus out of all trouble until the end), they are both outwardly very emotional people. Cato is violent and aggressive out of pride, arrogance and being brainwashed by the Capitol. Whereas Sejanus is highly empathetic, loyal to the districts and a revolutionary thinker resistant to brainwashing. However, both of them freely express their thoughts and emotions in a reckless way. There is no hiding who they are and being in a privileged position only gets them both so far- near the end of their respective novels. I don’t think this is a coincidence now. Snow was expecting someone with that emotive and obvious personality, or the showy personality like Lucy Gray. Even though Katniss reminds Snow of Lucy Gray, he is even more threatened by Katniss as she is not the sort of revolutionary hero he expects. Someone stoic who lacks charisma, yet somehow wins hearts and minds. Snow was not prepared for this after his past experiences with Sejanus and Lucy Gray. I think that was partly the point- a true hero can be anyone, even the one you least expect.

Remember nudity (full) is used as a gimmick every so often katniss remarks that her district was featured completely nude with bits of coal dust, glimmer has a see through dress which means nudity or partial nudity is probably used often. Also after she wins Katniss says she acts and is dressed ultra soft claiming she looks no older than 14 and the capitol eats it up.

I generally agree, but i think Katniss being made up soft and like a 14yo, after she wins was by design by Senna to make her look as innocent and unthreathening as possible after the rebellious stunt she pulled in the arena. If she appeared more mature and serious it would be easier to see what she did as a calculated move and a rebellious act against the capitols orders. Her looking as young and soft as possible makes the whole, silly girl in puppy love acting irrationally out of love more believable for the capitol.

I think the point Katniss was making about Marvel’s arrogance in only having the one pack of dried fruit related to the fact that he could easily return to camp and get more whilst if she’d had access to such resources she’d have carried more on her whether it be just in case or for the efficiency of not having to return to the camp to refuel due to hunger particularly while being in the middle of tracking another tribute. Although, Katniss would personally most likely refrain from the tracking of another tribute, but I digress, her reasoning for considering it arrogant seems to be simply that he was so assured there would always be an abundance of food waiting for him that he failed to keep an emergency supply. At least this is how I personally interpreted that section.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that. Glimmer's for beauty, Marvel's for being easily forgettable, Clove's for helplessness, and Cato's for having all those he killed killing him, while having the realization that all he had lived for meant nothing. In a sense, you could almost feel more sorry for them then the tributes who are reaped, because they have been fooled with their lives whereas the others haven't.

When the only options you can see are A. exploitation and B. exploitation + some form of appreciation (albeit twisted), without seeing any way out, it's natural to pick B. To rebel against a system of oppression we first need to be able to conceive of a reality without that oppression. Add propaganda and peer pressure to the mix, and you get victims who play into the system.

Disclaimer: this might be considered a “well, actually…” comment, but this is a more than a hour long video explaining the details of how the careers were used. It’s stated in the books that the careers are trained from childhood up until they turn 18 and volunteer. I can’t say for sure, but based on the age people start working in the mines in 12 it’s likely 18 is the age you’re considered an adult in panem. That’s also the last year you are eligible for the games the districts have to give up children for. It’s also (as far as I remember) stated they didn’t ‘exploit’ Finnick waiting till he got a bit older. He was 14 when he won.

They have their own technique of gathering volunteers and seeing which one would best survive. While others also argue Glimmer isn't a volunteer because she's not as good as her peers, she's actually brutal and pretty good compared to the other tributes. No victor from district 1 would go around bad mouthing anything the capitol did, no matter how traumatised they were by it or that it was against their will. If there was even a rumor going around the District it was probably painted as companionship or something like that instead of sex. I feel bad for her, being a career they probably trained her to have that sexy but deadly persona since even before she volunteered, which means she started being sexualized probably the moment she hit puberty, that is an entire different aspect of a childs innocence being taken away from her far too early.

I’m thinking they would’ve pulled the same last minute rule change like they did with katniss and peeta. And I guarantee it would’ve solely been for the fact to add “an exciting new twist” for the capital audience members Plus assuming from what katniss seen and heard, it seems like the capital citizens were more invested in the star crossed lover arc than two surviving tributes of the same district. Had it come down to Cato and Clove they most certainly would’ve wanted them to fight each other to the death

Under mercantilism, an occupying nation forces the colonies to do all their trading through the capital, so that they can't develop any independence, and they can only get what they need through depending on the capital. This is why they build industries, railroads, and schools (that only teach propaganda and whatever would be useful for economic production), but no hospitals or theatres.

Idk I just think Suzanne came up with a really complex world that hasn’t been explored much beyond the characters she’s written. The economic machinations of Panem is so deep and uncharted, and it affects the history and status of the districts as well. I could write a whole essay about this lol

Two of my favorite (but not necessarily "feel good") thoughts about the Careers from 74: - There is a HUGE chance that Glimmer would not have seen being forced into r@pey pr0stitut!on as a bad thing for a very long time after her hypothetical win. She's a brainwashed child being sexualized by adults across the country and would probably take a while of suffering to fully grasp her exploitation. - I'm a head-canon Cato x Clove shipper (I make them closer in age but otherwise love them) and it's so disturbing to realize that they probably wouldn't have realized only one of them would make it out. Again, these are brainwashed kids with a few moral screws loose, there's a huge chance that they literally did not think that far ahead. And that makes it all the worse (we love a good hurt-no-comfort fic).

Omg I love how your space is decorated and the makeup look and your commentary, so glad I came across this video and thus your channel!! Also, I have a more insidious take on the movie subtext of Glimmer’s change from the book (because obviously they cannot have what is an “underage child” half-naked on stage), and knowing what we know about how many of the most attractive and conventionally beautiful survivors of the hunger games are straight up pimped out to the capitol citizenry, I think what they did with her babydoll cut, extremely short, peach dress with a DARKER COLORED SLIT UP THE MIDDLE, with her hair in these sort of childish, cherubic ringlets, and her extremely flirtatious attitude was a clever move, because it could incentivize enough male sponsors who want her to survive so they can have their way with her once it’s “socially acceptable,” and she’s from one of the districts that most willingly participates in this perverted culture of child battle royale and then pimpery. So it’s actually a very clever survival strategy since she’s not particularly skilled with any weapons. Make them want her to survive for other reasons. But yeahhhhhh the dress looks like a split peach basically which could be a nod to any number of cultures that used this particular fruit reference with trainee high-end entertainers and prostitutes to reference things like the availability to bid for one’s virginity approaching. So her split peach dress that barely covers her past the bathing suit area is a very clear advertisement of a very particular product should she survive “😉” 🤮

I hate that Kato put his sword in the fire until it was red hot! You can't sharpen any metal that way. You have to use or make a whetstone. By getting it that hot, he ruined the temper that was forged into the blade- heat loosens the crystalline structure of metals! Now, the tip of his sword is going to be very soft, and chemically cannot hold the same 'edge' it used to, because he removed some of the carbon content from the steel! He's well trained with blades! He should know better!

People from my own country who think because their grandparents or great grandparents were european, they themselves are inherently european as well-thus defending the idea that colonization was actually good, that everything in the Global North is much better because they got "actual culture" and are more "civilised". There's a word for it in Portuguese. Something like "stray syndrome" ig, because strays are usually docile to strangers, even when repeatedly abused by them.

I wonder, because Clove was so young, if she 'cut someone off' for their chance to be in the hunger games! I mean, surely there were other older tributes who had trained for this day. I wonder if Kato resented her somehow for 'flipping the script' and taking the place of his chosen partner. He's far older than she is- I seriously doubt they spent any real time training together before the reaping. Their combat styles hardly compliment each other! I imagine that there's a lot of drama in the wealthier districts about which career tributes get chosen. Anyone can technically volunteer, but if you do it 'out of turn', your family might end up socially and economically isolated from the rest of the bourgeoisie! They only have until their 18th birthday to make it into the games. There's likely a brutal vetting process, and I imagine that the training centers would seek to break their older trainees just to thin the ranks. There'd be old washed-up, injured athletes talking about how they could have gone pro by getting in the games if it weren't just for one specific twist of fate

  • @oceanunknown

Clove being so young was a choice made for specifically for the film so chances are she volunteered as normal in the book esp considering in the deleted scenes in the film which followed the direct text more, Caesar is very nonchalant about Clove being a volunteer.
