I feel like at the time, Speed Racer was the only American Live Action anime to stay true to the spirit of its source material, at least until Netflix’s One Piece.

And Speed Racer is probably still the closest anyone's come to recreating the anime aesthetic in live action. Even LAOP cheats that aspect, with cinematography more inspired by Pirates Of The Caribbean than the anime. Which, to be clear, I think was a very smart choice specifically because it's so hard to do "live action anime" right. (The only other exception I can think of might be Takashi Miike's Ace Attorney movie, but that's kind of cheating since most of it is TV-style courtroom drama with static cameras.)

I remember seeing Speed Racer (2008) in the theater. I find it criminally underrated, and I’m glad it’s gotten a cult following.

The Speed Racer movie is imo one of the greatest movies of all time, it's such a shame it never got the love it deserved when it came out, it really was ahead of it's time. It's really nice seeing a lot of people expressing their love for it these days though, it's because of people talking about it that I checked it out and I am so glad I did, I loved it from start to finish! Go, Speed Racer!

I’ll say this about the target audience point: I was 8 when the film came out and, with no knowledge of anything having to do with Speed Racer aside from a vague ad, my dad took me to go see it on a whim & I was in LOVE with it by the time it was over 😭 I think there’s merit to the “ahead of its time” idea bc a lot of what I like about it now isn’t stuff kid me would’ve even grasped, it’s a very layered film more people should dissect! Enjoyed this vid!

It’s a rarity for a live action adaptation become better than whatever the heck Race To The Future was. The movie is well done in terms of plot, message, and cool looking cars! And the GRX in this film is safer to drive than in the original Anime.

I’ve got really fond memories of this movie. My dad was a Speed Racer fan when he was a kid and showed the original series to me when I was pretty young. So when the movie came out it was something we got to bond over considering we really don’t have many similar interests otherwise lol.

I don't care what the critics say, this movie rules. I'm not a huge Wachowski fan, but they understood the assignment here. They made a live action cartoon and it was awesome.

The Peta situation basically sounded like this to me: Principal: “We saw your child bite another student and grope his teacher’s breast.” Parents: “Well what did you do to make him do that?!” Principal: “What? He was out of control, surely this a problem coming from his house-,” Parents: “We’re boycotting this school!”

Saw the movie when it came out. It bombed, but i still like speed racer at a young age. The driven forces of this cult movie was its cgi and its campiness and blended well making it have a feel to the original 1967 classic which I watched on Cartoon Network before. That cartoon I mean anime was the main reason why I like sports cars and the reason of why I like the song take on me because the music video tried to mimic the speed racer vibe. So the band a-ha should credit the franchise too. Thank goodness I like the speed racer franchise for over 25 years.

Speed Racer is shown on TA once a year and I always take a day off work or work from home to watch all 4 showings of this amazing movie. I must have watch this movie 20 times and still looking forward to watching it. I was also rewarded this year with a revelation to Racer X name, do require knowlege of the danish languague to catch it. Look ad Rex name, then highlight the letter in RacEr X name. Er in Danish translate to Is in English, so they kinda give away the plot twist.

I love the 2008 Speed Racer movie. I’ve loved it since it first came out. Not as much as the classic original proper Speed Racer from 1967, but I still love it anyway. It’s one of my favourite movies of all time, apart from The Incredibles and The Shawshank Redemption which are two of my favourite movies of all time by the way.

I was in college when this came out. IMO, the other 'problem' that caused its failure was the tonal whiplash of going straight from The Matrix to Speed Racer. Not just the dark-to-bright shift, but also ditching the Matrix's deconstructionist storytelling in favor of an absolutely poe-faced faithful adaptation of a SatAM cartoon. At the time, very few Wachowski fans were ready for that. (And tbh, I was one of them. I didn't like Speed Racer on first viewing. But then I watched it again a few years later and really fell in love, so it all worked out in the end.)

I watched this partly because of the fact I was a great fan of the original cartoon (my first anime series, long before that term became acceptable here), and partly because I was a big fan of Christina Ricci at the time. I wasn't entirely impressed with the movie, though, but I'm not sure I can explain why. It was well cast (especially John Goodman as Pops - he really LOOKED like the character!), but somehow I never thought it came together all that well. At least, they actually got original English dubbers Peter Fernandez and Corinne Orr to do a cameo (RIP Peter Fernandez). Once I learned THAT, I went back to that scene just to see them. That was so cool the Wachowskis managed to make that happen - they were clearly fans of the original just like we were. The New Adventures of Speed Racer was not only terrible, but they changed the theme music! Did they expect us to get up early in the morning and NOT hear "🎵Go Speed Racer GO!!"? Not going to happen.

Looking back, Speed Racer was a notable failure, but props to the Wachovskis for their respect and fidelity to the source material (can’t forget how they got Speed jumping out of his car before that iconic pan straight from the anime’s OP) If it were made today, I can expect Trixie to chew out Speed in every other frame (like a stereotypical Girlboss), and Pops to be sidelined in favour of Susan Sarandon’s character

What is your source for “the chimps weren’t abused, of course?” An American Humane representative was present for the bite and for an instance where a trainer impulsively hit a chimp. That’s why there’s no “No animals were harmed” certificate in the credits.

I find this film hard to watch, but not in a quality sense (Even if I'm not fond of the film). The colour grading and, for lack of a better term, speed of the film are just eye straining to me. I wonder why didn't they make this an animated film given how it's nearly 80% CGI?

I love old anime shows and I love The Wachowskis for making the Matrix movies although I really dislike this movie. It would be great if you would make a video about the complete history of Nadia and the Secret of Blue Water especially the production hell the show was in, how it triggered Hideaki Annos depression which inspired him to make Neon Genesis Evangelion a few years later and the background story of the infamous island filler episodes.
