This was THE anime import of the 1960s. No joke, this show paved the way for adaptations like Voltron and Robotech, and direct imports like Star Blazers/Space Battleship Yamato, Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon and many more. It is an important cornerstone of eastern and western pop culture for a reason, and I'll still respect it despite its faults.

Wasn’t Gigantor, Astro Boy, and Kimba the White Lion one of the earliest Japanese anime in the west? I think Speed Racer and Kimba aired around the same time. 🤔

Speed Racer is one of my favorite shows of all time. It may be old, but it's really great, and just doesn't get the credit it deserves. I mean, they somehow made the kid funny, and not annoying.

'Speed Racer' does stand out form alot of American cartoons at the time. Especially Hanna-Barbera cartoons. (Though, it can be argued that 'Speed Racer's animation can look just as stiff, but with more dynamic posing, and expressions.) Also, 'Speed Racer's western influences helped it resonate with western audiences much like how 'Cowboy Bebop' won over it's audience in the states. 'The New Adventures' clearly didn't work simply because Fred Wolf tried to take his winning formula with 'Ninja Turtles', and apply that to 'Speed Racer', but they're two different properties that work best to their own strengths.

The fact that anime tended to be higher quality, featuring scenes rare in stuff like US cartoons, such as running to or away from the viewer, is one reason I enjoyed anime a lot more eventually. They also had a greater tendency to tell a completed story, rather than theoretically infinitely repeatable content (The Real Ghostbusters or Scooby Doo being two of the few I felt had a good reason to get away with that trend). To this day, I still love to watch The Slayers every so often, and I feel sad when season 3 ends (and yes, I know there's a season 4, and I enjoy some of it, but NOT the main story). But I also know I didn't like some of the characters as much by season 3, or the "lets send the characters to basically Earth where a light spell is super hard", as it just turned their escapades into a constant freak show event. And the characters were becoming less and less capable of handling the big bad each time, even since big bad 2 in season 1. They pulled the plug before it was completely ruined eventually, and I wouldn't feel that sadness after season 3 if it went any further.

Great video overall, but I do wish you had mentioned how Speed Racer had faded into obscurity in the 70s and 80s before an Harmony Gold employee created Speed Racer Enterprises to help get the series back into the forefront of the pop culture zeitgeist. While New adventures was a part of this, there were things like the og anime being edited and airing on MTV starting in 93 (and later cartoon Network) as well as things like Speed Racer the Movie, that Volkswagen commercial, the Geico commercial, that crappy stock art that was on every piece of classic merch for like 15+ years, etc. I just think there's more to discuss in between the og dub and new adventures and I hope you talk about it down the line.

The only Speed Racer thing I saw completly as a kid (As in "out of seeing the lego sets of the 2008 movie in the lego club magazine") was the Dexter's Lab hommage episode with them speeking a lot of stuff really fast. I don't really count the Faily Oddd Parents Channel Chasers segment with the Pops Racer stand-in going "Ohh! Ooh! Aah!" as it's not a full episode. As a teenager, I mainly saw a Wachowskis retrospectives who included Speed Racer by Durendal1, and the Just Stop Speed Racer Next Generation video, and some screenshot of Speed Racer X. Maybe some mischelanious Speed Racer retrospectives too, but I always forgot the 1993 us series was a thing. Even as an anime fan, I'm not a Tatsunoko buff (Gatchaman, Casshan, and all the "Time bokan" line are dope though), besides knowing they helped to the animation of Evangelion. Great video beside the fact you used footage of the 1980's Astroboy series rather than the 1960's one. I'm ok with you not using their original names ("Go Mifune" in the case of Speed). Probably because it's the international names we're way more used too. (Like with Pokemon)

arguably the show is a satire on the human condition and various aspects of human life with many segments satirizing different thing's the warners segments are satires of Hollywood and corprate greed slappy the squirrels segments regularly satirize endless optimism censorship and other stuff pinky and the brain is a satire of power and narcissism chicken boo is about prejudice as the basic formula of his segments is that chicken boo is always celebrated by everyone until they discover he's a chicken when his disguise is exposed and they all turn on him even siding with the villains who he saved them from since minerva is shown sitting around hoping to marry someone rich and then falling for a simp walter wolf after he is turned buff by a full moon this is arguably making fun of people who are shallow and just wait around for love the hip hippos is a mockery of classism and rich people given the way the hip hippos treat lower class people like their maid and noah the goodfeathers segments are about nothing and said characters are just a piss take on popular gangster film's like the godfather and goodfellas none of this is serious in the show yeah i agree that Katie kaboom had it been a satire of family dynamics rather then teenaged girl's
