The COMPLETE Dead Space Story Retrospective

Ойындар

Dead Space is one of the best survival horror games of all time. It's got some incredible lore with some excellent storytelling. Both Dead Space 1 & 2 are masterclasses in their own ways. Dead Space 3 starts to fall off right away but manages to finish strong toward the end.

Honestly, I would have loved just one hella cheesy line like that, especially since dead space has such strong RE 4 influence. Dead space 2 also has a couple cheesy action scenes similar to RE 4 so I think just ONE cheesy line like that would have fit and been a good moment.

I believe it’s said once, that the hardest part in Dead Space 1’s development was the hallway segment where Issac is dragged by a tendrill. Because the devs planned to make the entire game interactive,so they’re forced to add bunch of character animations , just for this less than a minute segment.

Personally I believe Roanoke said this or someone else did but the explanation i feel makes the most sense is it’s a snow planet full of blizzards. Being in a blizzard is bad enough but a blizzard and it’s night you can’t see crap. So if you see a human silhouette you’d want to attempt to reach them. And the marker makes the necromorphs keep their human appearance so the living unwittingly approaches them thinking they are human only to be killed once they get close. It’s honestly a good strategy.

Deadspace 2 was fantastic at subverting expectations established by the first game on many levels. Before, going the opposite way of the illuminated path meant finding extras, not enemies. Elevators were a sacred space where you could let you guard down. None of this was true in 2 and I was caught with my pants down a lot because of it. By the time I ended up back on the Ishimura, I remember being so paranoid that the rolling can almost gave me a heart attack. I felt so stupid after that I settled back down, only to nearly fly into my ceiling when the brute jumps out. It's really some immaculate pacing. You can really feel it in the story beats too, like during the train crash and the final shuttle. You're right there with Isaac the whole time saying, "are you kidding me right now!?"

For me I feel like the games getting less scary as the series went on made a lot of sense, in the first game Issac didn't know about the alien threat on the Ishimura so of course it was terrifying. In the 2nd he had already been through this type of situation so he was better prepared, by the 3rd entry in the series he practically has a doctorate in killing Necros. He is an authority on their destruction, so of course he is the most proficient in the last one. The scale of horror to action game just makes sense. At least to me.

That does make sense, but not: 1. Why are you stuck with James Vega from Mass Effect instead of Ellie? 2. Why are you spinning and hanging all the time in cutscenes you have no control off? 3. Why are you using guns that were proven to be ineffective, instead of engeneer tools that were proven to be very effective? 4. How did Unitologists turned into an army Cerberus style (Cerberus army in Mass Effect made sense, but this is a cult)? 5. Why is there special camera introducing every special Necromorphs, instead of camera always following Issac and keeping the immersion that you are him? 6. Why is there no tension from atmosphere and gameplay perspective (eg. FEAR, or previous Dead Space games)? 7. Why Zombies/Necromorphs have axes? 8. Why are mature adults arguing like teenagers in the middle of apocalypse and sabotaging entire operation? 9. Why Ellie who was a determined, cunnining, capable and overall fighter of a character, became stereotypical damsel in distress, but with bigger tits?

@@admiralkaede 2. I am not talking about tenticles, but in general. Most cutscenes in DS3 have some tension without any control. I remember one specific one where you are in spaceship and try to get in a suit. I was just looking around, because I know everything would be fine and it was generally uninteresting. Compare that to DS1 when you are dragged by the tenticle or in DS2 when you try to survive the bus section only to end up hanging. Both are tense because you have control of and can fail. Some would say those are glorified QTC, but I would rather have that then have Witcher 3 40 minute long cutscene or that thing in DS3. 3. In DS1 first encounter with monsters is showing conventional wepeobs and tactics don't work. In the end of DS2, entire army batallion is obliterated in seconds by the Necromorphs. And in DS3 you are using conventional wepeons with success. Scavanging is gameplay justification, but in reality you were scavanging in previous games. Frankly, it would be better in terms of gameplay and story Issac training soldiers to fight like an engeneer. 4. Cerberus was a state with a state like Hazzabollah or Grey Wolves. Unitologists were directly inspired by Scientologists. Can you imagine militant scientologists? The best evolution of for Unitologists would becsomething along the line of sleeper terrorist organization like Mythic Dawn, or Sixth House from the Elder Scrolls series. Imagine if someone in your group was a sleeper agent or mind controlled (maybe even you). We have seen in DS2 this story works like a charm. 5. There were many Necromorph introductions that worked perfectly. In DS1 I remember when one of them introduced slowly from the show down the hall. It was creepy and amaizing. In DS2, the charging Necromorph was also greatly introduced all while you having a control. Granted, most Necromorphs were introduced safely behind the glass door, but having a zoomed in camera just felt off and less tense. 6. In DS3, you are always accompanied by some music, usually heroic. You talk more trough chat far more and things seem to be still operational even tough you are told world is dead and any effective fighting force is gone (to be fair I stoped playing once we landed on ice planet). Compare that to previous DS games where you are all isolated, everything is falling apart or has fallen apart, everything is quiet and you know something can and will jump to you. Dead Space 1 and 2 have many things to do when it comes to horror, but Dead Space 3 simply trew all the horror out of window. Also Necromorph zombies that hunt you with axes are just redicilous and out of place. 8. I understand people panicking and endengaring everyone and maybe killing someone in the process. I also understand people getting depressed and simply giving up. I understand people wanting to side with the enemy either as a petty vengance, or power, or fear. I do NOT understand adults with professions that requires heavy discipline and focus bickering and killing each other over their sex lives. They act like teenagers from American movies where they make drama for the sake of it. It's not tense, it's annoying and idiotic. There are literally monsters that kill you and turn you into one of them. Sex is the last thing you will have on your mind in that situation.

This is exactly how I felt about the games. I actually only finished DS3 last year, after finally pushing through the dull ice planet section, and getting to the much much better ending than I anticipated. Then the DLC was the high note, and I loved the dark ending. A lot of people weren't happy with the ending being left open like this, but I think it very much fits the Dead Space franchise. If they ever make a new game, I hope it picks up much later in the timeline and with new people. Maybe with a Mad Max in space setting, with people trying to scavenge their way around because human society has long since been destroyed by the brethren moons. With instead of Altman, Isaac now being looked upon as the the holy martyr.

First off, Dead Space is cosmic horror done right. Straight up Lovecraft. You're slowly going mad, you're struggling against alien gods, and you're entirely insignificant in the face of their plans and desires. Second, I love how when Isaac stomps on something enough in 2/3 he starts cussing out whatever he's stomping on. "MOTHER FU- SON OF A BI- HATE THESE FUCKIN THINGS-" And the first time that happened to me was right after I got the shit jump scared outta me so it was perfect. Hats off to whoever had that idea, was genius and I howled in laughter.

the "zombies" is DS3 make more sense when you think about it, Roanokes video on the Fodder explains it pretty well. Us humans are good are separating humans from things that try to come off as human, we are naturally good at it. Regular slashers don't exactly look human anymore so they would have a harder time getting close to the prey, Fodder would be made to counter this, they still look like humans but not once they are right in front of you. There's a bunch of them on the moon because Danek had already been killing a bunch of EarthGov soldiers for a while, and for the marker it would be faster and simpler to make a Fodder because it just needs to wake up the corpse instead of mutating it.

I just played through all 3 and I do like them all the same but yeah there’s a lot that’s not great about DS3. There’s still some good bits though. Enjoyed the weapon crafting and combining and the coop play was a lot of fun had a gaming buddy in a different state I'd play with. It's the only games I've bothered to 100%. God I love these games so dang good now I wanna replay them all lol Edit: my fav combination was the rivet gun with a ton of ammo and arcing electricity one with an autoreloader and stasis module on it so that each enemy hit by the arc would be hit with some stasis slowing them down and I'd rarely need to reload. Was how I beat it on nightmare difficulty 😄

One of the big problems with Dead Space 3 was the crafting. It made you way too powerful way too quick. Took a lot of the tension out of the game. Another thing was some of the real lazy writing that was so far removed from the other two. For instance, Ellie magically has her eye back and has titties twice the size as before haha.

I've always been bothered by "Kendra was there to get the marker" which implies that she knew that the marker exists. Which would further imply that she sort of knew what the marker could do to people. Which leads you to: the Valor, which I'm very certain was there to help Kendra (I think I'm deep in a speculation rabbit hole here) after Kendra literally has you send out a distress beacon to blast your location, was not prepared to deal with necromorphs. I find that so incredibly bizarre. If they're there to help Kendra, they should have some basic knowledge of what needed to be done to be safe. Yet they get overwhelmed by one necromorph.

While the dlc ending does fit with dead space’s lovecraft style lore, it feels too much like a cheesy horror movie ending to abruptly end when the brother moons appear. I would like to know where the story goes after that, especially Ellie’s fate. Just strikes me that there’s still a story to tell there, maybe not one that’s a happy end but one of Issac facing against an enemy & shedding light on their predicament.

Honestly, when I was younger and played the first for the first time I just thought "Im in Hell arent I ?" and did not look too deep into the lore and that went on, a bit but now that I see it altogether, the pieces I have has been merged and I can safely say this is amazing, Doom with Alien and Event Horizon + a Dash of Halo for me love it forever
