@@shamusteakiawa No ! There weren't joke books around when these guys told jokes. Today's comedians tell anecdotes IE: stories about about everyday life. I have told jokes in a local pub years ago & knew the late great comedian Jethro. I have recently been in contact with Tank Sherman too, with a view to doing it again. When these comedians were telling jokes, people had a much better sense of humour, nowadays you cannot say anything without someone taking offence, everyone is so sensitive nowadays. That's the EU for you, taking away another of our freedoms IE: speech. We are not in the EU now & we need to scrap a lot of the almost 54,000 rules & regulations they imposed on us since 1990 alone. We should start with putting a gagging order on the bloody PC & woke brigades. Most people under 40sh think anecdotes are jokes as most don't know any difference. I personally can sit through so called comedians like Peter Kay & Lee Evans ETC without laughing once. In fact even if my most favourite comedians tell anecdotes, I cannot laugh.

11:54 Charlie Williams did not have an accent, he spoke like those with whom he grew up. I recall seeing him at Chatham Central Hall in the early seventies. The whole southern audience were rolling with laughter. It was later I realised he was multi talented, miner, professional footballer and entertainer. In his era the attitude to mixed race folk was different to today, I wish I could explain it succinctly, but it was in the era when ,(wrongly) rooms to let would be advertised as not accepting "coloureds" or Irish or people with children or dogs.

Yeah - I know what you mean. You don’t understand until you’re 50 or over and then all of your parents’ complaints and comments make sense. At least back in the 70’s and 80’s, everyone was fair game to have the Mickey taken out of them. No one was a “protected group”. If you went to see these guys and were anywhere near the front (or git out of your seat), you could expect that they would make fun of you, mercilessly , for the next 5 minutes. Then came the “Red Wedge” in the mid-80’s and only Conservative politicians could be the butt of jokes. Later, they would target a certain demographic (e.g. white van man, Daily Mail readers, Brexit voters) as being stupid and racist. The ones who really get on my wick now are the female comedians (like Amy Schumer) who can only talk about their fannies and having sex. Yawn.

Having just stumbled into your channel (happy to sub) I’ve had a hoot listening to some of the greats from the past. Dunno if my adult kids know what’s happening to me tonite!!! I have been listening; then pausing whilst I txt (the ones I could!!) suffice to say they think I have lost the plot, methinks because half of the humour goes over their heads, Tis a generational thing I guess 😂😂😂😂

Bit Unfair! but I get your point, there are loads of Comedians who don't swear, and quite a few who do, what annoy's me, is when they swear just for the sake of it, so I've just realized...I agree more with you now!❤
