The Collapsing Dam Almost Took Me With It - Manual Beaver Dam Removal No.108

The Collapsing Dam Almost Took Me With It - Manual Beaver Dam Removal No.108
📝Basic information:
Location: Poland
Date of recording: April 2023
About my work - I remove beaver dams when I receive an order from a state organization.
I do not choose which dam to remove. It is decided by officials at the request of nearby residents. Each dam is assessed in advance if it can and if should be dismantled.
Removing the dam is not a threat to beavers. I do not remove their houses - lodges.
Dams are removed only in places where beavers cause damage, for example by flooding nearby fields, flooding the basements of nearby houses, or when the stream on which beavers built their dam is degraded.
Even though beavers are very invasive animals, they are under strict protection in our country.
I personally like all animals, so beavers are fine too.

A lot of beaver dams fail eventually because the beavers will travel insane distances to find a place to build a dam. A lot of times it is just a single beaver that does this in some remote place, and eventually the beaver passes from age or predators, or will just straight up abandon it. At some point you have to remove them because they can create huge problems if a beaver isn't actively maintaining it, and you get a huge flash flood that rolls through. Considering there was no "hut" (some call it a den too, but from the outside it looks like a thatch hut) where the beaver was occupying, it's safe to assume he probably abandoned it some time ago.

I more than anything do find the flowing of water immensely satisfying. I used to love beaver dam removal videos, but I have since realized how much ecological value such structures add by slowing the water, recharging the aquifer, making the plants downstream grow much more resilient to changes in weather, and not to mention providing habitat for countless species by creating diversity in riverscapes with side channels and ponds of varying depths. And they do all of that for free. Post10 only does removals when a dam creates a hazard to infrastructure and I find that approach muuch more ecologically sound. There are plenty of other channels on yt that have information on river restoration efforts and the true value of beavers and their dams, how some people pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to create log structures to mimic the beaver dam for nature restoration, water storage, erosion control, all that good stuff. I know this provides financial incentive to you, but perhaps you can assess with the above information, if your next dam removal is doing good or harm to the environment. Summers are hotter than ever, and beaver dams simply cannot burn. Cheers mate.

  • @pm5903

    @pm5903

Good builders...not planners. They build in order to protect themselves and their family, not to plan ahead for ecological reasons. 99% of the time, their dams cause catastrophic problems for the land, grasses, trees, and even displaces a large area of wildlife, insects, etc. not to mention the problems it causes for farmland areas down stream, housing down stream, and since the dams leak off and on, it causes changes and inconsistencies in erosion which can lead to abnormal flooding during certain weather conditions like an El Nino or El Nina and can even cause sink holes to form in the forest due to ground saturation causing abnormal changes in the water table. This is all of course just to mention only a few things. 😊

I think you owe your rake some loving care after losing it in the creek and then throwing it like a stick! 😂🤣😂😅😄 But what a beautiful location and a spectacular dam. Glad you moved quick out of the way when it gave out! Have a great weekend with your family. ❤

I'm glad you were able to get out as fast as you did, that was a lot of water that rushed out, and with those chest waiter I could have been bad. And it's good that you recovered your rake. You are meticulous in tearing down that dam, I feel you don't want the debris making another mess downstream. Great work, looking forward to the next video.

Amazing how they can do that. As a kid they made some of my favorite places to fish. There was always a northern or two at every dam. My record was 13 one day and I was about the same age.

this is probably a very common childhood fantasy playing out on a more realistic and less fatal scale then imaginations may wonder off to lolz. Kind of cool though that it rebuilds itself so you get to do it again over and over again. Would be cool if you made minature buildings people etc somewhere on current land in the flood zone would make for an interesting video to. Still cool enough just to see people breaking up a beaver dam. Its a cycle, you let it build up for a while, then you remove some. Its not as if we don't want them here, they are important. :)

Wow you were lucky to look at the dam the moment it started to slide, and a good thing you didn’t have your boots stuck in the mud, you might not have lived to tell the tale. When your overal fills up with water you get pulled under.😱Great video, working in those slippery circumstances is hard, glad you didn’t get hurt. 👌👍💪🏼

Yeah, such a good work. Poland has extremely low water retention index and at the same time its agriculture and industry need a lot of water. Good job, just a guy with a shovel and another thousand tons of water gone just from this little beaver pond.
