The Cold War Explained In 15 Minutes | Best Cold War Documentary
At the end of WW2, the Cold War had begun. From Stalin to Reagan, from the Nuclear Arms Race to The Cuban Missile Crisis, from the Berlin Wall to Vietnam and Korea, this is the story of the Cold War. The World would lay divided between two great superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union. It would not be a conventional war, with the two sides never directly fighting, instead, it would be an ideological battle between communism and capitalism, the East vs the West and the resulting struggle for ideological influence and power.

Both sides would stockpile nuclear weapons, with questions over how to use, control and eliminate them becoming central to the conflict. The conflict would come to an end when Gorbachev’s reforms, Glasnost and Perestroika began to unravel the Soviet Union itself.
Reformers began to emerge across Eastern Europe, and in 1989 a string of democratic revolutions would see nearly every communist government ousted from power. On November 9th, the most symbolic monument of the Cold War, the Berlin Wall, would come down, and Germany itself would be reunited the following year. The Soviet Union would collapse in 1991, dissolving into 15 independent states, a surprisingly quick and bloodless conclusion to the Cold War, a conflict which had dominated international relations for over 40 years.

For a 15 minute summary of an almost-50-year era in history, this was pretty good. This video does do a good job of explaining the Cold War in 16 and a half minutes or so, which is impressive. However, I think they should have included Nixon’s trip to China, which led to a significant shift in the global stage. I also noticed one error: The Domino Theory has the most influence during the early sixties, and was one of the justifications used for America’s involvement in the Vietnam War. It was not used to justify America’s involvement in the Korean War.
This video was really helpful it literally explained my whole history book in 16 mins thx

"Khrushchev gave Kennedy 6 months to vacate Berlin." Kennedy had his "Rodney Dangerfield" moment there and got no respect from Nikita; that was savage
Boiling down such a vast topic into a 15min video is an audacious project. Good job!
Any advice on how to have a great channel like you? I enjoy watching your videos
I love the 3rd and 4th finality
I would say it is important to note that Kennedy agreed to remove the nuclear missiles he had in Turkey after the Cuban missile crisis. That was one of the main reasons why the USSR put missiles in Cuba to begin with. So it was agreed upon that the US would remove their missiles in Turkey and the USSR would remove the missiles in Cuba.
@nancy4don
5 күн бұрын
Except that it was agreed that it would be done at a later date, and secretly. The Jupiter missiles in Turkey were supposed to have been replaced or removed already, as they were obsolete.

What a great video it is!
This might have been a pretty good presentation, and I give you credit for making the effort. Trying to summarize the Cold War in 15 (or 17) minutes is not something I would attempt unless I was to be well rewarded. However, you really let yourself down by not even mentioning Sputnik or the "missile gap" or the Space Race at all, and leaving out the disaster at Chernobyl strikes me as being an exceedingly critical omission. I fully appreciate that hard choices had to be made to cut your script down, but surely there needed to be some mention of the Space Race and some mention of Chernobyl for this to be a complete summary. Apologies if others have already mentioned these omissions. 🖖💯✌
@emilyholt1416
Жыл бұрын
I’ve been studying for 2 years and I think Chernobyl was a rather minor factor. I think it undermined Glashnotch for sure (I can’t spell don’t judge me) but the Hungarian uprising, polish solidarity, the Czechoslovakia upraising etc. had all already happened. The Satellite states would have left regardless of Chernobyl. What do you think?
@brudnick39
Жыл бұрын
@@emilyholt1416 I think that when Gorbachev said that Chernobyl was perhaps more impactful to the end of the USSR than his own glasnost and perestroika reforms, he was referring to the fact that they may not have happened if it had not been for the explosion at Chernobyl. Gorbachev announced his ideas for glasnost and perestroika and other reforms at the 27th Party Congress in late February 1986, just about exactly 2 months before the Chernobyl disaster. As I understand it the Politburo was quite opposed to the reforms early on, but when Chernobyl happened it pretty much forced the Soviet Union to open up and begin to reform, or at least it dramatically reduced the ability of any hardliners to resist the reforms openly. You mentioned the Solidarity movement in Poland, and that did begin before Chernobyl exploded, but it was not until well after Chernobyl that the Solidarity movement was able to protest openly...until 1988 they were heavily suppressed. In that case, it seems like the USSR might have had a stronger response if there had NOT been the tremendous amounts of manpower and resources that cleaning up Chernobyl consumed. Your other two examples of Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968 would seem to support my contentions...both being occasions when the Soviets were much more oppressive before Chernobyl than they were after it. ✌
After watching this it makes you see the world more differently
Great video
This was a great documentary
