The Cuban Missile Crisis Explained In 20 Minutes | Best Cold War Documentary

The Cuban Missile Crisis is the closest the world has ever come to nuclear apocalypse. An ever-escalating arms race had led to the deployment of Soviet missiles in Cuba, which were now prepped and ready to fire on Washington, New York, and almost the entire Eastern Seaboard. The defining event of the Cold War, it would see the world’s leading superpowers fight in a dangerous battle for nuclear superiority just 90 miles from the American coast. For 13 days in October 1962, American President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev would engage in a battle of wills, where one wrong move could lead to global destruction. Time was ticking, and neither side knew how events were about to unfold.

JFK always said that the Russians were unprovoked, and TODAY we all know that JFK was lying BUT in 1962 people, believed ALL JFK's lies. Spot on Moses! The globalists incited this war by moving NATO military assets/heavy weapons into Ukraine to intentionally violate the treaty between Russia and Ukraine. They did this to distract from the widespread, massive anti mandate protesting happening throughout Western Civ, along with the collapsing covid pandemic narrative. Go to most any MSM website that has been harping about nothing but covid fear mongering for two solid years, and you will see that they are hardly mentioning it over the past week now.

    Exactly. I might not know the internal politics of Ukraine. But I do understand global balance of power. And I would be a complete hypocrit backing Kennedy's choice to launch missiles if Russia put missiles at my back door. And then saying Russia is wrong for trying to stop the same thing. I even remember Putin saying that he was against Ukraine joining Nato and despite the media saying this was unprovoked attack. I would not be surprised if Russia had been issuing warnings for a while.

    I can't agree with the Khrushchev "last gamble" tone that this video has. At this point, allowing a nuclear buildup around the USSR was unacceptable by any moral standards. The US was already an aggressor in the Vietnam war demonstrating how far it is willing to go. Decisive action was needed, and he correctly deduced that since the USSR is able to deliver a devastating attack on the US, not only to Europe, the US would have to back down. Comparing the Castro attitude of "nuke em all" along with the many of the Kennedy stuff, Khrushchev was far less of a "hothead". He didn't want these missiles in Cuba, he needed them to make a point. Otherwise, and knowing how many times US generals "begged" for the use of nuclear weapons, there is a high possibility of encountering the nuclear threat by the US with a clear disadvantage. Castro was a hotheaded "revolutionary", the US, with all its "values", has no excuse. Feeling safe while other countries could burn is very egotistical. It was quite a thought-out operation that delivered exactly what it should. The Cuban sovereignty was a slap on the face, the removal of the weapons that threatened the USSR, established respect, opened a communication line, and shuttered the feeling of complete security that the US had. Still, this was used in propaganda inflating the Red Scare.

    I’m actually glad the Cuban missile crisis despite how much of a dangerous game it was on both sides. Without America realising what kind of game they were constantly close to playing as they constantly considered the nuclear option and surrounded a country like the USSR with nukes. Inevitably it would have lead to complete destruction. So luckily we live in a world with MAD and be weary of the consequences

    @@webkeeper The existence of the weapons in Turkey isn’t exactly a secret, though. Reif pointed out “the Air Force, in its fiscal year 2015 budget request, noted the presence of ‘special weapons’ at ‘storage sites in Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Turkey.'" Other experts noted it’s not easy to hide such weapons. In July of this year, a later-deleted document published by a NATO-affiliated body appeared to confirm nuclear weapons were being housed in those same five countries. The document from a Canadian senator for the Defense and Security Committee of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly said the U.S. nukes were in Incirlik in Turkey. www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2019/10/16/trump-appears-confirm-us-nukes-are-turkey-which-would-break-with-longstanding-protocol/

    The video and presentation were top-notch but it was completely America-centric. This is the first video I watched of your channel and the first few minutes immediately caught my attention. Saved it to my watch later as my reward for after I'm done with my homework, but was let down by how one-sided and America-centric the content was. The fact that America placed missiles in Turkey (before the Soviet Union's placement of missiles in Cuba) was completely downplayed. Plus you kept talking about the reactions of the American people, JFK, XCOM, even went as far to talk about and also QUOTE other lesser-known American figures, but you never once mentioned anything about the soviet union and cuban people other than just Castro and Khrushev's dialogue with Kennedy or each other :( Whenever you make a video about topics involving several countries, don't focus on just one country. And if you do then at least mention in your title 'The Cuban Missile Crisis Explained FROM THE AMERICAN PERSPECTIVE in 20 Minutes'. I feel like I learned more about Kennedy's presidency than I learned about all three perspectives (American, Cuban, and Soviet) of the missile crisis

    Comparing the missiles in Cuba to the ones in Turkey is an inaccurate comparison. The US did NOT forcefully take over Canada and Mexico in 1945. The USSR DID conquer every inch of territory in Eastern Europe ad they could. Yes, the US did lots of "dirty" things in its foreign policy. But it was in reaction to the significantly worse things the Russians did. Just look at what's happening now in 2022 to see what the Russians are really all about, and it is not good.

    This channel has a much longer video that better contextualizes key moments of the Cold War. Also this isn't from an American perspective its from a British one. They are not the same, and if you think otherwise then it would seem to suggest more about your bias than the content creator.

    Living through this as a 12-year-old girl, I remember these days vividly. Being taught how to "duck & cover" in case of a nuclear attack, like that would actually save our lives. There are still instructional videos that were seen by families & schools at the time that are pure propaganda, but I suppose it did help folks not to panic. As we now know, you won't survive a direct nuclear attack. The sales of bomb shelters skyrocketed. Vivid memories.

    We came very, very close [to nuclear war,] closer than we knew at the time. This was not only the most dangerous moment of the Cold War. It was the most dangerous moment in human history. Despite of warmongering people around them, Kennedy and Khruschev stood their ground and showed these warmongers that they are true leaders. I also salute one Soviet officer Vasily Arkhipov a real life the man who saved the world. Today the world is again on the brink of nuclear war, with this on going war in Ukraine, a proxy war between the West and The Russian Federation, I hope there will be another Vasily Arkhipov who will once again save humanity.

    The Kennedy Administration was wise and prudent to agree to secretly remove the Jupiter missiles from Turkey and pledge not to send U.S. troops to invade Cuba; defusing the crisis. However, if memory serves, those Jupiter missiles in Turkey were previously scheduled for removal prior to the eruption of the crisis, to be replaced by faster, lower-yield and more-accurate SLBM's loaded onto new fleets of U.S. Navy submarines in the Mediterranean.

    @@kimobrien. Well, this would have been true for Kennedy *or* Khrushchev, for that matter. Yet another reason why Khrushchev wanted to remove those missiles from Cuba was that Castro wanted to launch the nuclear missiles already in place to pre-emptively respond to what he perceived to be an imminent invasion by U.S. armed forces on the island of Cuba. Obviously, this would have been disastrous.

  • @kimobrien.

    @kimobrien.

    @@chetpomeroy1399 My understanding is Che went to Khrushchev and asked only that he tell Kennedy he would install missiles if he did not back down from any more invasion plans. Khrushchev said he would go one better and secretly install missiles. Not wanting to offend a powerful ally the Cuban's acceded to his demands. When Kennedy began making threats then Che told Khrushchev if the strike us don't wait for them to strike you before hitting them. No doubt the Fidel announced that any invasion would be meet with the most severe measures up to and including a launch of nuclear weapons to defend Cuban sovereignty. Khrushchev than panicked and had the announcement made on Radio Moscow letting the Cubans find out the same way Kennedy did by the Radio broadcast. Naturally that left them as an unhappy ally left out of the decision process. In later meetings with the Soviets Raul Castro was told look your 10,000 Km away we can't help you if the US chooses to invade. That was just another reason the Cuban's had for limited trust of the Soviet leadership. They'd already discovered the Yugoslavian proposal to sell Batista arms when the US decided to stop supplying the dictator. Che also criticized the Czech's for sitting on a large cache of WW2 German arms but wanting liberation movements to pay market prices for them. All this points to the fact that the Soviets were not serious about further revolutions anymore than the UAW leaders who would tease the GM execs about how they'd be sitting in their wood paneled offices after the revolution.

    Exactly the same. With two differences. The leaders aren't the same and each making different moves. The U.S Generals wanted to invade Cuba. Kennedy said no. Here Putin did invade Ukraine. Back then Krushchev was smart enough to understand that when President Kennedy said he would launch he most likely would and new it wasn't a Bluff. I don't think Biden is smart enough to realize Putin might not be bluffing.

    Orlando Rodriguez It would have remained an American brothel and playground, and the Cubans would have no education nor hospitals, nor any kind of life. Why do you think the Cubans got rid of those fascists in the first place and grasped an improvement in their lives in their socialism. Not only do the ignorant Americans not know the difference between socialism and communism, they haven't a clue of the difference between Democracy and Fascism. It isn't all their fault, because unlike the educated Cubans under socialism, the Americans remain uneducated under their 'democracy', which denies them free healthcare and free education, and gives them, fixed elections. Americans are just about as indoctrinated as the apochryphal North Koreans, which why the world feels pity towards them, as tourists say, a nice place to visit, but a nightmare place to live.
