When the Berlin Wall came down I am not afraid to say I cried like a baby. My neighbour served with the British Army in Berlin during the Cuban Missile Crisis and told me as it got dark when he was on sentry duty he really expected he wouldn’t see the dawn. I grew up in Britain in the 70s and 80s and nuclear war was always in your mind. If it had happened my area was targeted for 5 nukes as it was heavy industry and the motorway network north to south ran through the area.

There should be a national holiday here in the US commemorating these hero's of the Soviet Union. We should name streets after them. Without their actions, the world could be much different today. well the cold world isn't something that you can simply define. its basically the political atmosphere of the 20th century. America became victorious after WW2, and because of this, they dominated the world economically. Soviets had dominated their part of the world. The two countries naturally have different goals. But due to lack of information, lack of internet, lack of knowledge, etc people were very unaware of basic information. Now, in 2021, the cold war will never be possible because the citizens of the world are too educated about world affairs. What people never talk about is all the times the USA and Soviet Union actually worked together. It's more interesting to hear about the problems, issues, and disagreements...but there were also times when the USA and Soviet Union worked together. Keep in mind, the USA and Russia always had a trade relationship/citizens visiting each other's countries, despite the proxy wars and propaganda. Soviet Union took out leaders that didn't fit their agenda..as well as USA. People were too fearful of another World War. Thank God human beings are interconnected and no longer so nationalistic! The Internet has made the world so much smaller; for the most part, we all view ourselves as brothers and sisters, despite borders.

    I write this comment to sincerely relay my thanks for this best cold war documentary. Indeed, making the bestest cold war documentary must have been a task with a high volume of required necessary research to complete and structure out in a comprehensive way. Managing all that to a very respectable degree like you've done truly proves your ability to create documentaries and just how much best they are. It is therefore not an exaggeration to say that this best cold war documentary's quality has a significant rift between the second most bestest best cold war documentary. Sincere thanks and hope to you from me.

    Excellent documentary. The outro was unexpectedly stirring and emotional regarding times I wasn't even alive for. Such a dramatic and intriguing part of world history, the Cold War. The same could be said of the Roman Empire's history, but the Cold War condensed the political drama of a thousand ancient years into a few harrowing decades.

    Reid, since you apparently have the expertise to qualify this documentary as "not perfect" - as in compared to your perfect expertise, right? - I invite you to list every single flaw, specifying the timestamp of the flaw, explaining the flaw, and including links to the relevant primary sources demonstrating that what you claim is correct (primary sources are the only kind of sources an expert uses - but who am I to tell you, the perfect expert?). Any expert knows how to do this: you, the perfect expert, can therefore do it in no time. Otherwise, it's hard for anyone with just basic education (i.e. PhD-level, which is indeed basic compared to your perfect expertise) to take your comment seriously.

  • @historybuffguy

    @historybuffguy

    @@MetteC5 I didn’t say I was an expert or say it was flawed. I said it was good and that I appreciated not being propagandized in this documentary (as compared to others I’ve viewed). So as an expert on criticizing comments, point out the flaws in what I really said versus your critique of what you think I said. It’s there for easy comparison.

  • @historybuffguy

    @historybuffguy

    The only thing I meant by not perfect is the very few times the creator had to, or chose to editorialize for brevity or because you can’t lay out every side to every event with every interpretation without making a story unmanageable.

  • @MetteC5

    @MetteC5

    @@historybuffguy Ok, fair enough. It's deeply concerning (though hardly surprising) that the lack of propaganda in a documentary is such a rare thing in the US that it needs to be mentioned. A documentary is, BY DEFINITION, not propaganda. In other words, if propaganda is included in a given video, it CANNOT qualify as a documentary.

As another viewer said, very concise, objective, and the topics covered were so broad that it would be so easy to get lost in the weeds or go down the rabbit hole of a particular subject, but that didn't happen at all, and you somehow covered just about everything in an hour and a half. @@renogisantes927 sure but also most people misrepresent these protests. These were incredibly complex protests with some of the protesters advocating for capitalism and some advocating for a return to Maoist era policies. The protests were not widely supported in China and most of the demands reflect this with a greater influence for the intelligentia. The US tried to make this out to be a riot of the Chinese people rising up against Communist rule in China, but that's not what it was. It really wasn't as big of a deal as the US makes it out to be.
