Moving logs both around the property and onto our sawmill have been challenging. Even after buying a backhoe, getting lots onto the bed of the sawmill hasn't been easy so since we have to mill up about 60+ logs, we decided to spend a whopping couple hundred bucks to get a good log grapple, or lifting tongs. Enjoy the unboxing and test drive!

The hook on the bucket is there to be used for things like your new grapple. You will have a lot more control of your load than wrapping the chain around the pin and you won't need to worry about pinching your chain. You two are doing a great job, keep it up. Love watching young couples build their dreams.

Jesse I have three suggestions for you , ( #1 ) get a length of chain and make you a loop that fasten your grappler do your backhoe , suggestion ( #2 ) get two pieces of 3”x 3”angle iron 3 foot long and weld two pieces of pipe that will fit over the points on your grappler, weld a short length of chain with a slip hook to attach the angle iron over the crossbar close to the point on your grappler this will enable you to pick up your beams without poking holes into them.( #3 ) invest in a shut off switch for the battery and invest in a new battery for the backhoe, this should probably clear your battery problems

I have to agree with Whistle Dog. I fell 30 feet to the floor when the forklift boom cylinder seal ring blew off when I was in a work basket on the forks. Fortunately I wasn't hurt but hydraulics rely on a $.50 o ring in way too many places to keep that half ton of boom from dropping on your head. Never Ever get under the bucket or any part of the backhoe when it is suspended and or the machine is running. One of the Stout sons working at Stout Excavating had a Michigan Loader drop the bucket on him. Killed instantly.

You can easily find phantom loads on equipment easily with an amp meter hooked up in series with the battery. DO NOT TURN THE KEY ON! You'll blow your meter. Take a reading off the meter then start pulling fuses one by one. The one that causes your reading to drop is the circuit that is drawing down your battery. Love the videos! Keep up the awesome work!

Hey Jesse, I work for a local gun shop and get asked the question “why is local more expensive?” I typically answer with “because online, you don’t typically get to speak with someone who spends all day with these products and can answer questions and make suggestions without you have to go hunt it down, and my knowledge is valuable.” Thank you for supporting local!

Jesse, wake up, you've been driving me nuts. I thought by now you would have figured it out. Start using your Bucket to lift and drive the dang log to it's destination. You'll find life a lot easier, let alone much more accurate. I've hauled logs with my backhoe for over 15 years and not once did I ever use the backhoe,..... they're for digging holes and narrow trenches, Yea, I even use the bucket to dig nice wide drainage swales as deep as you please. The bucket is way more powerful than the hoe, particularly when the hoe is any distance from the tractor. If you ever want to grapple something with the hoe, install a "thumb" on it.... They can be purchased or easily fabricated form channel steel. By the way, I'm sure you've noticed the fork lift hooks welded on your bucket, you can use those to suspend a chain from either side, the middle, whatever you need. Try it! You'll like it!!. Take it from a fellow pilot, ok? PS, put some of that weight & balance, aka "moment" airplane knowledge to work.....jeez oh wheeze.

Hey guys, Have you thought about building a log deck that holds several logs? When you need a log on the saw, you just roll it on the saw bed. That way you don't take a chance in damaging the saw bed with a swinging log. It would speed things up cause you could just throw several logs up on the deck with the tongs. Not sure if you have room but I think it would help.

Okay, after reading all the Electrical advice, let me throw in a tried and true Mechanics trick. (ASE certified) 1. Get Voltage meter. (Cheapest you can find) 2. Disconnect Battery from the Post. (Make sure Key is off) 3. Place meter between Battery Post and Cable. a. If Meter shows Voltage, Unplug 1 Fuse at a time. (Replace after check) Voltage will drop when the offending Circuit is found. 4. Trouble shoot Offending Circuit.

Two Suggestions; 1, purchase a good multi tool! With everything you're doing and will do you will use it everyday for large and small engine adjustments, box opening, wire cutting and a plethora of other things. 2, Use the hook on the back (if it has a latch) of the bucket. Loop a chain through hook this will allow you to make minor adjustments (up and down) when you open and close the bucket. once you get used to it, you'll be able to get really accurate. The Hook will not fail with what you're doing.

Morning guys, I'm a heavy equipment mechanic and most large pieces of equipment are equipped with a cut off switch that will disable your batteries and not allow a voltage draw on them, also a deep cycle gel cell battery will go far in the life of your equipment a little pricey but worth the cost. Keep up the maintenance on it oil changes and hydraulic filter changes . keep tire pressures where they need to be will help with premature wear on your tires, great videos

if you take two two ft logs that are about 6 inches across you can drill out holes for the pointy bits on the claw and make yourself a set of soft jaws. This will let you lift the finished timbers without damaging them

If you guys got 4 hockey pucks and put a shallow hole in each side, you could put them over the sharp points on the grapple, and it would pick up your finished beams by the hockey puck 'pads' without digging holes in them, and they'd be quick on/quick off for moving between finished beams and rough logs.

Good tool to save your backs. I used to own a Woodmizer portable and although I had the hydraulic loader, some customers would insist on wanting to bring logs to the mill using their tractor. I always refused ..... one bad luck and you sawmill bed is all bent to hell and you lose any chance on miling accurate lumber. While you obviously are getting quite good at operating your backhoe, an accident is always possible (you sure don't want any delay with the Class coming at the end of the month). You might consider setting up two logs perpendicular to your mill, as a loading ramp. You build it level or even sloping a tiny bit towards your mill. You then can just set the logs you want to cut on this log ramp and then roll then gently unto the sawmill using a peevee. Best of luck and be safe ;)

    1) you can scoop up weight into the shovel of the backhoe to counter balance the bucket end, then you T to the saw table but back away from the table to get full use of the arm extend and the counterweight in the bucket will make it all work. 2) Pre-Make a chain loop for the grapple so it's just loop, lock and go. 3) I do not see a provision for an overhead hoist in your garage , something you would really want once the garage is floored over. 4) Expect Snow soon in the year and probably more than norm for 2017 . . Good Luck

Add a cut-off switch(like on your battery bank) to the tractor. Cover the prongs(on you log grapple) with radiator hose or like material, so they don't damage your beams. Hopefully it makes your lives easier. You can use it to pull lags out of the woods too. I used to use a similar item to pull pallet type stuff off flatbed trucks.

Local costs more because: 1) They have to pay for a storefront, likely in town, which is wayyyyy more expensive than a warehouse with a shipping/receiving door in the middle of nowhere. 2) They have to pay for a higher number and quality of staff (1 guy that can read a computer screen can pull many more orders in a day than a person-you-would-want-to-interact-with can serve, waiting for someone to walk through the door). 3) They are ordering 3 of a product not 1000 (Shall I continue?). And if we want the convenience of heading out at 4:30 on a holiday weekend to get the things we forgot, we'd better visit the local guy for the things we plan.I want my neighbour to be able to buy the beer once in a while, so I will support his business all I can.

Good video, thanks for sharing the real world of heavy equip. Rigging is everything when it comes to crane work. Try putting the chain around the backhoe stick and out to the bucket teeth, then down to the grapple. This gives you a closer lift (more leverage), one more axis of control and keeps the bucket out of your way. Build a wood table beside the saw, so that you put the log on the wood table then slide (or roll) to the saw, that way drops etc. happen to cheap timber, not precision machinery. Good luck and work safe. Greg B.

If you make little feet to go on the spikes you can still use it to move the milled beams as they will work like a pair of pliers and will grip tight due to the weight and won’t poke holes in the finished beam.

Hey guys, it's true I don't know much about auto electrical stuff and certainly never claimed to be an expert. The reason I mentioned the starter was that years ago before there were computers in cars, I had a car that was killing my battery and it turned out to be the starter. Replaced the starter and problem was solved. I just assumed the windings were shorted. I said "my 2 cents" because I figured it wasn't worth much anyway (hoping it was obvious). Just trying to be helpful. Let's move on and put this behind us. Thanks for the support JM. Let's continue to encourage these folks in their project.

You need to put your stabilizers lower, lifting the machine higher. At 10:33 there is way too much weight on the tire, it is very deflated, no need when you have stabilizers. Your front bucket should parallel to the ground and lifting the front a little. The front tires can be lifted ever so slightly but this will give you a solid footing.

Our wood mizer guy said the best thing to do is build a bridal to place your logs on then you can peavey them onto the bed. When you make your bridal make it the same height so your not fighting gravity when rolling your logs. Also if the log falls it would damage the bridal not the bed. We load with a set of forks on an LT28, your mill is a lot lower so it should work better . Good Luck.

Kershaw is an excellent brand of knife (I actually own the Kershaw Clash Serrated - 1605CKTST). Make sure you determine whether you'll prefer your knife clip mounted so the knife is tip-up or tip-down. Changing the position can significantly improve usability and your knife is one you can customize it on.

On used equipment, sometimes the previous owner might attach something directly to the battery both, negative and positive. I grew up on a farm. Old farmers did that all of the time.

A small solar panel setup on the backhoe could probably fix the battery issue.

love to watch you folks working together. We ( my wife and me) built 7 houses, total of 18 units. I have a smaller tong for my Hitachi EX50, very handy to handle logs. Work safely.

Thanks for the video! I just ordered 2 of these tongs per your recommendation. My plan is to hang them off the front bucket loader and use them almost like a grapple. Two of the to keep the log from swiveling while I am transporting it. I can't way to try them out.

Hola Guapos. The Grapple really interested me. I live in Spain and the aquaduct in Segovia, built by the Romans 2000 years ago, used the more or less the same pincer technique for lifting stones. All the stones had a hollow chiselled out either side where the grapples engaged. Great to see that somethings do not change. Great channel. Well done. By the way, I have lots of grey hair and have loads to do with my time. It will be here sooner than you think. Abrazos. David in Spain

Installing a thum is a simple fix if you know what you are doing. There are loader bucket options too. Research the hydraulics it is imparative that a relief gave is in add on system or cylinders will bend. Then there are add on valve body section to add. Plus all the hoses and having the Snap On wrenches that have the correct angle. There are bar holders on your front bucket to add on fork lift fork that is quick and easy. Respectfully Kudos

As for the battery drain ck to make shear the disconnect is doing just that. i have has some in the past not fully disengage. or just get a battery tender solar painale , put it on the hood (easy snow removal) or up on top were its a little safer. I have some on equipment i don't us very often and it is always ready to go. when moving your logs get a big shackle and have the boom coming start out the back the ho will be a lot more stable. love the videos guys .

Those backhoe's had a problem sometimes where the wiring harness passes through the floor, because of spray from the wheels, under the floor there is a plug, it corrodes, it could be shorting, installing a battery cut off switch, is a cheaper fix for now.

My brother built a simple set of forks and pinned them to the bucket. Excellent for moving trees around. Just leave tall screws standing up on the back end so they don't roll back over the bucket and onto a pressurized line. Been there done that.
