Genstlemans' knives. Gentlemen's suits. I remember way back last century when I was given a coat and tie so that I could be seated in a restaurant. They didn't fit. I didn't recognize tham until they started to talk.

Hahaha. One of the most iconic American knife makers of all time said and I quote "Pearl handles are for pimps & gamblers" RW Loveless. He actually ended making some rare custom vaiants with pearl handles after much convincing.

Gorilla Funk Very interesting! Thankfully I don’t fall into either of those categories, but I still like the idea of a pearl handle. Too many westerns as a child growing up.

@@johnc4774 I don't agree with Mr loveless myself either. But....from a practical point of view pearl and bone unless resin stabilized has a tendency to crack @ the pin rivets over time. I think pearl or New Zealand paui shell looks awesome. Same with mammoth tusk ivory or many other bone handles. But be aware that their natural beauty comes at a high price regarding long term durability.

I've had mine for years and the handle scales have gotten a lot darker over time. They didn't mention the most remarkable thing about it and that's the weight. At under 2oz, it doesn't weigh down your pocket. That may be why the price of it is a lot higher now than when they made this video.

  • @redtech87

A gentleman's knife, to me, should be one that if you had to use in a social setting will not cause alarm to those around you. Tacticool of any kind are not gentlemen knives. Luckily knives come in all shapes and sizes and it's okay to own as many as you want for whatever circumstances you find yourself in.

I've found that even in my workplace my Benchmade 940-1 carbon fiber doesn't cause too much issue. The carbon fiber just gives it an elegant look, and even though it's a long blade, the elegance offsets it a lot. You also can't get much better quality for the cost until you get up to the sebenzas

I wear a suit almost daily, I won't use pocket clips with my slacks anymore. The thing you guys neglect to mention is how fast those clips wear out the less durable materials slacks are made of. This makes my needs for a "gentleman's knife" somewhat unique. It has to be slim, but it also needs to be small so that it isn't heavy at the bottom of my pocket.

Sleek, small, smooth and polished, wood or other classic scales are an easy pick. Modern/cool stuff might work but probably not with the wrong execution. The clip if it has one needs to be simple or smooth looking, attractive but not distracting. When in doubt, look at pens for reference or even match.

I've been carrying my Boker Urban Trapper for over a year now and I wear dress slacks every day for work. I used to carry much bulkier heavier knives and this was my first dive into something more slim and gentlemanly. Definitely love it! I convinced my dad to get one as well. It opens so smooth, and no one is scared of surprised by it, but its still fully functional.

  • @morganw02

About a year ago I had to decide on a knife to wear with a suit and slacks. I decided on the Gerber 39 series. I needed something without a pocket clip, because no matter how suave it looks, the pocket clip detracts from the professional appearance. The same with something that is 2 hand opening, so I don't attract unneeded attention while deploying the blade. And finally, the lock-back design is a timeless classic, exactly what a gentleman should have.

Accoutrements is a totally legit word... it probably is french in origin... or at least sounds cool with a french accent. ac·cou·tre·ment /əˈko͞odərmənt,əˈko͞otrəmənt/ noun plural noun: accoutrements additional items of dress or equipment, or other items carried or worn by a person or used for a particular activity. "the accoutrements of religious ritual"

ZT0450cf, better looking than any knife on that table. I have a CA legal Protech halfbreed in black/CF if I need something a little smaller.

Gotta disagree. Like the M16, the 0450 is easily carried but it would look out of place at a black tie event. The lines on it are too aggressive, too "murdery".

  • @subiesaurusrex

    @subiesaurusrex

Alexandre Aubrey I think the 0450CF is small enough to not look to scary. I get what you mean though. But a bunch in this lineup could look out of place, the Newport looks clean but the “switchblade” would draw some looks. The urban trapper is a little bigger than I would look for a classy knife too. I think all of these knives fit the profile of gentlemanly it just depends on personal preferences.

Watching this 5 years later. I never really wore a suit back then, but these days, I'm wearing slacks/suits daily for work (I'm a men's wear consultant and Sunday-school teacher/youth leader). I typically carry my Microtech UTX-85 because of the slim profile, or my Benchmade mini-bugout. The straight pockets are painful to use, and sometimes even the slimmest knives bulge or wear my slacks out.

I bought a Boker Urban Trapper for when I wear a suit. I've been very pleased with it. The knife fits great in a suit jacket pocket. So lite you don't even know it's there. Well worth the $65 I paid for it. It's the only knife you had on the table I have any personal experience with so I know it's a solid choice. Some of the others look like great knives as well. I'd love to get my hands on the tuxedo you showed, looked really classy.

I'm not going to wear a knife on a clip with my suit. I have a couple of Benchmade carbon fiber/titanium knives with blades less than 3" that are very thin and light. I removed the clips and carry them in my suit pocket. They are unobtrusive and perfect for the task.

I was surprised that your gentleman's knife roster didn't include Benchmade's 940-1. It's slim, narrow, and, other than the blade and lock, it's solid carbon fiber. It weighs so little that you forget it's there. It's my favorite knife when I wear a suit.
