The City that Inspired Cyberpunk
Ойын-сауық
Kowloon Walled City existed in Hong Kong for over 100 years. It developed during the Opium Wars as a military base and through time wound up a refugee camp without a government. Eventually the city became the most densely populated place on Earth. In this video we cover its entire history and its lasting impression since its demolition in the 1990s.

I just watched the Matrix video you made, but I wanted to write this comment here so you would actually read it. Look...Your work is AMAZING. Like the way those videos are created, the vibe they give...it's just something I never witnessed before this way. So I ask you to please go on with it and give it your best because I am 100% confident that you can and will be successful with it when you try long and hard enough. I just know. Honestly when I saw the video I was thinking you are one of these 10mio subscribers accounts. Keep it up mate

The focus and clarity you have in explaining things is amazing. No useless excitement, no bait of any kind, no bs. Brilliant! (btw, I and some fellow indie game dev actually designed a whole game set in the city of darkness :) )

A _second_ Kowloon City was built in the universe of Shadowrun's Hong Kong; it was part of the main quest in the aptly‑named sequel to Shadowrun Returns, Shadowrun Hong Kong. Darker & eldritch compared to the first one, I still remember those damn teeth...

It's amazing that the structure even stood without collapsing. I mean, it was built by who-knows-who at who-knows-what-standards or build quality... I would feel un-easy living in such a place. But to it's credit it did stand just fine, falling only to intentional demolition. Despite it's seedy reputation though it was a fascinating existence. It's almost like some sci-fi cyberpunk setting from a manga had turned into real life place. But anyway! You do amazing documentaries and I think you deserve far more subscriptions. You got mine for sure.

In Brazil's favelas, you can find 5-stores buildings hanging over very steep hills. So I have some clues. First, the construction is usually supervised by experienced engineers. Second, the owners (criminals) want to save on material but not to the point of causing collapse in a few years. By the way, if this happens the engineer is a dead man

Shenmue made Kowloon, a bizzaro Chinese Las Vegas, a fun place to be. And it made me long for a place I never could go. It feels like I spent so much time enjoying a slum city that was demolished when I was born. I've watched all your uploads and you've got a lot of regular compliments on your work. There's no higher compliment I can give you than your videos have me giving Avatar a second chance.

Btw, Bombay - India has slum dwellings that have a very similar aesthetic to the Kowloon Walled City. Just as densely packed as this but still exists to this day in conjunction with all the post-modern buildings all around it. Just FYI.
My mom used to fly into Hong Kong for business a few times a year and she always loved the surreal landing flying between buildings. Sadly, they stopped doing that a few years ago.

I saw your Matrix documentary then I clicked on a link to this video in the end screen. It seems like you're not working with the algorithm that keeps your videos nice and fresh. If you think about it this is the perfect number of views and comments (you can read all of them). This is something rare and unique a gem if you will. This is also the best video about this place I've at least three others but they were much more formulaic and popular but not nearly as memorable.

Insane fact: Jardine and Matheson, founded by the drug dealing manipulators who started the opium wars and the founders of HK, is still the multinational in Hong Kong and still in the family. All of whom are billionaires.
Shame you didn't cover the crazy Christians who moved in to run drug rehab services, and how the triads let them do it. That was another point of surreal anarchy about the place
