I have a 16 year old ecodrive that I recently had serviced by an AD because I pulled the crown off. The capacitor still has 90% strength. I am sold on Citizen as my go to brand.

Tough, sealed caseback, sapphire crystal, accurate........and NOT a monster watch. I have one and love mine.

Best line ever; "Much like me, it's got monocoque construction." Puntastic!

BTW instead of a spring bar tool, just use a SIM card tool. Works great. I've been keeping one in my wallet for years in case I need to open the card slot on my phone and I recently realized that it works great for the quick-adjust on watches as well.

Had this one for a few months now. Picked it up new for $250 The lume on mine will last all night and better than my Seikos. For me it is the perfect daily wear. Very comfortable. My eyes acquire the time quickly. Date is small for my eyes to pick up quickly though.

I think it's important to note - newer ecodrive movements do not have capacitors. They use rechargeable batteries. If that fails you can replace/get them replaced.

I just ordered one at a very fair price. This will be my third Citizen to go along with my dress model and my titanium model. This will complete my Citizen collection. Not a criticism but have you noticed you can't find watches anymore without a date window. I like it without day and date windows. I don't like adjusting them and the day I wake up and don't now the month or day anymore, it's over. I just want the hands to tell me the time and nothing more but those days are gone. Great review. thanks.

I have 2 of these watches..one with steel bracelet and the other is the black cordura..and they are awesome.accurate as hell and really durable..the name fits the watch perfectly

Very nice watch and great review. I prefer the "Ray Mears" Citizen to this one, not as highly feature but better looking IMO. Folded out paper clip for the clasp adjust!

It's like a throwback to a 60's and 70's Rolex Explorer when they were still tool watches. Before the quartz movement pushed them to become a luxury brand.

Hey Nick. Have you ever tried any of the Dan Henry Watches? Really wonder what you would think of them.

Does this watch have solid links or folded steel?

My lifestyle demands a watch that can stand up to abuse, namely, because I'm clumsy and tend to bump into things. After a year of wearing this watch, I can report it stands up to the punishment of a real lummox, barely displaying any wear. It looks great, isn't too heavy or thick, and best of all, it's accurate to about 1 second per week. My only complaints are I wish the hands were sword-shaped instead of having these blunt ends, and I don't consider the lume to be that great.

With the duratect coating, is it truely hypoallergenic ? If so, or on your say so, I'll be looking for one. Always love your reviews Nick.!!

This watch has quickly become my go to, It's nice to go into the shop and not Think "Oh, $hit!" a bit later because the Seamaster or Kenitic Ti are on my arm. Sure I could go get a cheap watch, but that's not an option I like. I did just that for a long time, then purchased a Tissot PR50 (which I still own and it still works great) I't so nice to not have to worry about the watch and just go about your day with the confidence that the watch will take any abuse I dish out.

I thought i was listening to Jay Leno! Fucking amazing. Today is 10-24-19. I just ordered this beauty from Amazon for $235. I got the black band, the bracelet will always hold dirt. Five year warranty and if you register the watch with citizen, you get an extra one year! Sapphire crystal is what they use on the Rolexe's and that is what this watch uses! Unfortunately almost all Citizen watches use mineral crystal which is junk, trust me it will scratch a lot easier. There is nothing better for the money than this watch for every day use! Great review of the watch my brother! You the man!👍👍👍

Dan Friedman Citizen makes a better Solar but Seiko outpaces Citizen in design and technology in general , Grand Seiko and Prospex are incredible

@@moongazer2049 seiko has been raising up in prices lately and quality hasnt been as good as before, as much as I love Seiko and their name, and heritage im getting slightly disappointed.

I’ve been in to watch’s since I was 18 19 just can’t afford all the great watch’s made lol. Wine taste beer budget but it’s nice to see other people’s pieces. Thanks Nick for sharing some awesome watch’s!

You put that on a watch steward olive drab nato strap and you got yourself a winner! I’ve got the Men's BL1258-53L The Signature Collection Blue Dial Stainless Steel Watch. It’s a highly underrated time piece. The way the sun reflects the colors on the watch is phenomenal!

I've got the same and it's why I'm looking at other citizens.

I really want one of these, but it looks so much like my tudor heritage ranger.

I've had this watch for a while now and have come to really like it. Nick's criticism's are on point, but its merits have grown on me - it's a good watch for dirty work and so utilitarian that it's actually distinct. Also the price has dropped to a much more attractive level.

LOL @ "building a relationship" with an AD, especially a Citizen store. Watch sellers are the same as car dealers, I couldn't imagine getting "in" with my local Honda dealer so that they'll gratiously allow me the pleasure of buying an Accord. This is a neat watch, love the monocoque/integral build, two-tone lume, sapphire, solar and hardening/coating but the dial and hands just don't do it for me. It's almost there but I'm going to hold off for version two-point-oh.

I have the green with cordura and waiting for this version

Excellent review, love it! You talk about tool-less quick adjust. Can you make any sub-$500 recommendations for watch models or straps that do this? I have the Citizen NY0040 (the Italian Military one) and also the BN0150 (the eco-drive diver) BOTH with ratchets. Any others? (particularly titanium?) Thanks so much! I've searched high and low.

agreed watches need to offer quick adjusts, however lots of people will just take the bracelet off asap and put it on a nato or something of the like.

Oh yea one more thing u didn’t mention here that I wonder . For a 200m watch it doesn’t have a screw down? Any info on how it’s waterproofed? Ty

Maybe have battery or capacitor replaced every 15 years along with new seals. Lubricant lasts longer than 20 yrs. Maybe 30 at least.

been looking at this one for a while, I love the look but do I need another(!) watch?!! of course not but the itch is still there. Scratch or no scratch...

The Victorinox INOX quartz can be run over by a truck. Automatic, not so. Kinda looks like this one

It is truly amazing that I have been able to survive as long as I have, not having a micro adjust band.

Just got one on clearance. Has an imperfection on the dial and the seconds hand doesn't hit all points like all my other citizens do. They don't and probably won't get anymore where I got it so not sure if I should return it...

Solar powered. Lasts at least 10 years. Some over 20. The capacitor can be taken out by accessing the front of the watch. The crown stem is two pieces.

The capacitor has a 30 year life span. At that point it will only have 80% capacity. The watch is too loaded, the bezel comes off. It will probably outlive you. Mine is 4 years old and has been heartily beaten at work and does not look any different than when it was bed.

i want this so much, but they no longer make it and its so expensive in the used market.

Previous Promaster BN0118 was smaller. Much better to me, when I'll have that money. Without bracelet and using titanium it's lighter.

Move the end of the band sufficiently far towards the other half of the bracelet and the edge of the clasp sticks out.

One redeeming quality of this spartan watch is the second hand has lume on it. I do not like it when the second hand is missing lume.

My first eco drive watch has finally died , it would no longer hold a charge for more than a few hours. I bought it second hand in the early 2000s for $20 and spent $25 on a silicon band. Less than $2 per year that is good value.

Do not get into watchs there far too dam cool . seriously awesome fun personaly my brand is seiko but i got a citizen a while back and love it so im seriously concidering a 0100.51 promaster iso diver quick adjust clasp solid end links 42mm £150 im not sure tho it is awesome but im 10 watches deep and the rabbit hole never ends dose it.grate video nick im watching a few of your citizen reviews to get to grips with the overall picture of them as a brand and there typical standard would i be right in saying you think in general they do good work some flaws that can be a pain but good for the money as long as its a keeper (all mine are btw never sold a watch i want all the watches lol )

For this price, it's kind of disappointing that it doesn't have Bluetooth or Radio time sync (although with the NIST shenanigans, radio sync might not be valuable in the USA much longer). Alternatively, I also kinda wish Citizen would tap into their Bulova parts bin and put some of those super accurate Precisionist movements in their Promaster line.

Good review. I went with the Victorinox INOX. The Citizen has a new eco-drive system with super fast charging and 5 year power reserve. They didn't use it on this watch opting for the ancient E111 movement. The INOX has a Ronda 7-jewel movement that is serviceable. Yes, it runs on batteries but the best thing about the INOX is the looks. Holy cow! It slams this dog into the dirt with a cut beveled bezel that is just beautiful and a dial with such depth it sucks you in. Oh, and the Victorinox is half the price with proven toughness (check youtube for the now famous torture tests).

Where on earth is the INOX half the price of the Citizen? Seriously, I'd go buy the INOX so let me know!!

The main problem with this watch ls that unless you just really like the case, it doesn't offer any practical improvement over the Citizen BM8180-03E which I own and think is a great watch. That watch can be found for between $60 - $100. Once you jump to the price point of this watch there are a lot of other watches you need to compare it against.

The Promaster Tough has 200 M Water Resistance , A Surface Hardened Case and a Sapphire Crystal. They are practical improvements over the one you mention which makes it worth the extra money.

I have this watch. The worst thing about it is it has a 1950's-sized tiny you-need-a-magnifying-glass-to-see-it date window. Why? It's so stupid in this day and age.

Nick!!!!! You have warned us all about the perils of getting into watches. Nick!!! I got into watches, aaaand I should have heeded your warning. I'm in deep buddy.

A request for future reviews.... if you weigh the watch, please also weigh it in METRIC scale (can your scale do that?). Practically nobody else other than Americans know how heavy 5.6 ounces is. Anyway I own another watch from the same series - the black 200m Diver one.... BN0195 - 54E. The only complaint for me is the date window is too damn tiny. I may get an after-market cyclops lens to put on my watch.

There is a tough titanium, but it is for the EU market.

I go to work everyday and think damm I’ve not got a spring bar. Does anyone else think this.

I kinda like the two tone lume. I probably wouldn't buy this watch though.

I like Citizen, but that seems to expensive for what you get on this one. The other thing is that if you have more than a couple watches, you are always trying to find a good way to keep your solar ones charged. I made the mistake of leaving my Calibre 2100 in a drawer for many months and after that (when the watch was about 9-10 years old) it simply wouldn't hold a good charge anymore. I had the capacitor replaced and now it's fine, but this is why I don't really want any more eco drives. Prefer automatic watches.

No perpetual calendar, so not my choice

Werd, the lume is really my only disappointment with this watch . I still enjoy it though, it's pretty unique in spite of the odd (and off) comparison to the Victorinox INOX and it's a TANK. Quality bracelet as well. Close to perfect for a beater watch that isn't a G-Shock.
