The Citizen BN-0191 Promaster Diver Wristwatch: The Full Nick Shabazz Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today, we're going to look at a gem of a dive watch, the Citizen BN-0191 Promaster Diver. With all the functionality of high end diver, at a price that's less than the tax you'd pay on a Submariner, the Promaster's a great choice for diving, for sporting, and for just wearing a watch.

blitzbbffl some places still have it for closer to 225$. I know my seiko was 400$ at Kay's and only 189 on Amazon. The way he market is strange to me. Such different prices at different stores. It kind of turns me off to them honestly. I really want to get into them but I'm afraid I'll lose my ass. Well that and I have no clue where to buy and sell on the used market.

Truth be told, you're better off with this than any other budget diver. Yes I said it, even the SKX. I don't see what the big deal is with Seiko divers anymore. Almost all of them have misaligned chapter rings, sometimes you're paying twice as much for some of their divers.

My SKX typically loses 15-20 seconds per day. This one loses 0.1 second. So for almost the same price it’s 170 to 200 times more accurate.

I agree with that. I know there are a lot of automatic snobs out there, but I'm sorry... Why Seiko continues to put the cheap ass 7s26 in their watches is beyond me. They should offer hand winding and hacking in all of their movements. How much more would it be for them to use a 4r/NH movement? And there is the accuracy issue. Automatics are great, but unless you have a thousand dollar watch they are really just over expensive pieces. The saying is true that if you have an automatic watch then you know what time it is, but if you have two automatic watches then you have no idea. I'll take the watch that is as accurate per month as an automatic is per day. As soon as the caliber 0100 is released in watches next year then I can say I really have the most accurate timepiece money can buy without a radio signal. Seiko can keep their cheap automatics and rabid fanboys. I'll wear watches like this that are more reliable, than you very much.

Anthony Marc I agree 100%. All in all, if you're going to buy an automatic watch, buy ONE, and buy an accurate one with minimal complications. Tudor Pelagos is the way to go in my opinion.

I stumbled across your channel a month or so ago as was looking at waveceptor reviews, purchased and very happy👍And after owing an Eco drives before, the Perpetual Calendar Citizen caught my eye in your other vids, but can't find one for a fair price😏so I went for this. Received today and couldn't be happier. Owned a lot of seikos over the last couple of years and this lume is as good as and I don't have to wind it!!!!. Really appreciate your reviews and humour, keep it up. 👏

For you guys who need more information than what's in this video: Awarded ISO 6425 approval, it is the ultimate diving companion, featuring WR200, large, easy to ready dial and markings, screw lock crown, and unidirectional bezel to prevent accidental turning underwater. Plus, with Eco-Drive Technology converting light to power, you never have to worry about batteries failing you at crucial times. CASE SIZE (MM): 44.5 GLASS: Mineral Crystal WATER RESISTANCE: 200M/20Bar [Scuba Diving] FUNCTIONS: Calibre E168, 3 Hands, Date, One Way Bezel

Thanks for mentioning the bezel. Sooo many guys say the unidirectional is ISO approved?, their are now a few ISO standards and the Swiss have made their own, as to be expected but only ISO counts when I'm short diving. What you listed at the end is fine to correct the previous "unidirectional" word but in Scuba/Diving clubs in Australia we say "safety" bezel, meaning minute anticlockwise bezel that's all you need, and readers will know your in the know . Back to the Promaster, the minute hand let's it down but the lume overall and "Eco Drive" saves the watch 6/10. Cheers J. Brisbane, Australia.

I would definitely take a look at this watch. I have the Citizen Promaster Diver BN0151-09L and I love it. I also have a 20 year old Citizen quartz that still runs like a champ. It spends most of the time in it's case because it looks to tiny on my wrist.

Awesome job Nick! As a gear geek and a watch nerd it's great to see the variety of content. Even better you're a fan of Citizen. Would love to see you do a good, great, bad and ugly, of the Citizen Nighthawk. I know it's been a little bit reviewed to death, but it would be refreshing to get your take on it, and there are some different variations that haven't gotten as much coverage, mainly a radio control version, which checks all the boxes.

I just bought one of these with the gray dial and bezel ring on Woot for $136. At that price it's a steal and a great watch. This kind of sale happens often with Citizen watches so if you can be patient you can eventually find a really good buy somewhere.

I've got this watch arriving this week. I'm a HUGE Citizen fan. The second I saw this watch I knew I had to have it. They just knocked the ball out of the park with the design of it. As far as it not having an expanding clasp... Yeah, I can live with that. How many people actually buy these types of watches to dive with? It's like the people who buy the huge 4x4 and never ever take it off road. They just want the look and appreciate the functionality, but generally they are just going to be wearing it under their sleeve. Serious divers are going to either replace the bracelet with a silicone strap or buy a watch that comes with a strap that more easily adjusts. I really don't think that is a deal breaker. The only thing they could have done better to this watch is put a domed AR sapphire on it, but that is an easy upgrade to do. I'm really excited about receiving mine. I have that same Planet Ocean in the 42mm size and I think I like the way this Citizen looks almost as much as the Omega. They really just nailed it with this one. Thanks for the great review!

Got the back and blue. Absolutely love them. Contrary to your dislike of the chunky and large size it is exactly what I love about them. There are many smaller & thinner options out there but this has great presence and you can wear it on mesh, leather, rubber or steel bracelet and it will still look great. I think that for the money Citizen has the best lineup of diver and diver style watches out there. I am not only a fan but I own 7 of them.

I just bought this from Jomashop... I wish it didn't have a date complication though. They should've removed the date window, unless they put in a perpetual calendar too. It also only hits around 50 to 60% of the indices. Lastly, it seems a bit slower than my Citizen AT8124. After hacking it to match the seconds hand of my AT8124, it was slower by around 3 seconds after a few days. But i found out that the at8124 actually runs faster than atomic time while the promaster is just slightly faster than atomic time. I do wish they kept the orange minute hand from the BN0151, it could've been the trademark of promasters, and would've made this model stand out a bit more.

Mate, I love the New Yorker accent, the factories in Malaysia have improved over the past few years and we can see it in the Seiko and Citizen product. Only one gripe, Citizen Eco's will fail at about 7 years, I know as I have bought them for my wife and Son in the past. Their not worth sending back for refits, so a dilemma arises with the owner. Clever marketing on Citizens account it would seem. All that said what a great review. Cheers from Brisbane, Australia.

I own this watch. It looks great and build quality is solid. I have an Omega speedmaster reduced, a Seiko Alpinist, a Hamilton Jazzmaster, a Seiko Flightmaster. and a couple of vintage Seiko speedtimers. The Bracelet has solid end links and beats the snot out of everything I own except a couple of Hamiltons I sold and a Glycine Combat sub which it is equal to. Comparing it to my Seiko SKX is pointless. Only the Alpinist gives it a run for it's money. The dial is a deep pie pan and the watch is about 11mm thick. Got it for $80 at a pawn shop. The Omega bracelet is loose and jingles plus the bezel is gold filled so I can't wear it with confidence.

It's good to note that since it's "Divers" 200m, it complies with ISO testing (that individual watch itself was tested) but should be also be noted that 200 meters water resistance is good for only up to shallow recreational diving. Anything used during deeper diving (deeper recreational diving, professional diving, basically anything over 100 feet) should probably be at least 300 meters water resistance.

Valkyrie Survives, Because the water resistance ratings are determined through brief, static tests in a pressurized chamber. The conditions are different when you're actually diving to depth with the watch and swimming around (watch/water isn't static) for a prolonged period of time.

TrilobiteTerror I have used the older design of the Citizen Promaster Diver for 10 years as a strickly diving watch with regular diving at 30 to 50 meter. Upon inquiry to Citizen I was told the seals were the same strength between the 200meter and 300meter, the difference was the pressure it was assembled at. At ten years the older Promaster failed and I am excepting a 1/2 price offer from Citzen's repair department.

Be smart and good luck.

@@uniqu3xperience965 Thanks for the heads up on that! I looked it up and the tech is there, but I'm not sold on the styling. I'd like it if they could simplify the design a bit. Oh well, I'll keep looking.

Good review! I consider to get this watch. But I am a bit concerned about its use of mineral glass instead of saphire. But according to what I read mineral glass is also pretty scratch resistant so it may not be a dealbeaker. I also wonder about the fact that this watch is available under two numbers: bn0191-80L and bn0191-55L. The latter has higher price but still uses mineral glass. These two are identical and I can't see any difference between them.

Dial and bezel way too reflective for me. It would be like looking into upcoming traffic all the time. I like your comparison watch, the Citizen BM8180 more because that black dial appears flat - much easier on the eyes - at least in your lights.

Nick Shabazz I don't wear a watch every day anymore, but even when I did it was the same Rolex Oster Perpetual Datejust I've had since 2002. Could never bring myself back to wearing anything else after that, and slowly but surely sold off the rest of my watch collection including all my Seikos and Citizen Eco Drives and pretty much got out of the watch game. Used the money from selling all that stuff to pay for the service on my watch ten years later, and it's still functioning flawlessly.
