Hi from Italy. That's also a principle in Chess. Emmanuel Lasker, one of the greatest World Champions, often played the wrong move at the right moment. Chess too is a battle of nerfs. Lasker has been WC since 1894 until 1921, it worked.

Notice in the part of this scene starting at 2:14 that after Edward G. Robinson's character lights his cigar and says his lines, he points the lit match at Steve McQueen's character and never once looks at the lit match as he allows it to burn down just near his fingers before extinguishing it. This was a wonderful touch that conveys that Lancey was a master poker player who could skillfully--and with perfect timing--play with fire without getting burned.

  • @Dabhach1

You could watch this scene a thousand times, but what made Edward G Robinson such an amazing actor is that not ONCE is he in the least bit triumphalist about the win. ANY other actor in Hollywood playing this role would have crowed like a raven given this material, but Robinson delivers the lines with a straight and respectful face, almost like a father imparting a painful, but important, lesson to his son. Brilliant reading of the part.

RIP to the late, great Edward G. Robinson. This role was his "Swan Song", for all practical purposes. Never again in his career did he get such a role. He was the original choice for Dr. Zaius in Planet of the Apes, but the producer fired him to get (the lower-priced) Maurice Evans, and the cast were told to cover it up...

@@johnsomerville8005 Calling a guy you know nothing about - based on a character in a story - an idiot, to me shows immaturity and poor breeding. Mr. Francis expressed an opinion; it didn't match with yours, so you chose to try to belittle him. Sorry, but in my eyes, you lose! So the Director MAY have 'demanded' such acting (were you there, did you see him do so?) but only GREAT actors can pull off scenes like this and make them convincing. I won't retaliate by suggesting you eat Hot Dogs etc, but I would suggest that you try to chill out a little and accept the fact that you don't necessarily have the final word on anything in life. All the best :-)

One of Edward G. Robinson's best characters , In one scene when they're on a food break and The Kid talks to Lancey "The Man " about gutting (Bluffing) Pig (Jack Weston) and Lancey asks him if he seen it coming twice and The Kid says yes i saw it coming the look on Eddie G's face as he stares at him is a very intrical part of the move. In Lancey 's stare you can see his mind is on the game about how and what it's going to take to beat The Kid it's like he's making a mental note that a bluff will not beat The Kid which almost everyone thinks he's doing (bluffing) as you hear their thoughts in this scene. Lancey is "The Man" Well played Eddie G.

I first saw "The Cincinnati Kid" when I was only 10 years old. The movie was unforgetable, especially this last climactic scene. An interesting bit of trivia about this movie is that the two leading stars, Steve McQueen and Edward G. Robinson, their only film appearance together, each got their acting start working in Yiddish Theater in New York City. Another interesting factoid about this film, and that is clearly evident in this video clip, is that the great film editing was by Hal Ashby, one of the true Hollywood greats, who would go on to win an Oscar for editing "In the Heat of the Night." Hal Ashby would also go on to direct several films that have become cult classics, including "Harold & Maude," "The Last Detail" and "Being There."

Sing, and the hills will answer; Sigh, it is lost on the air; The echoes bound to a joyful sound, But shrink from voicing care. Rejoice, and men will seek you; Grieve, and they turn and go; They want full measure of all your pleasure, But they do not need your woe. Be glad, and your friends are many; Be sad, and you lose them all,- There are none to decline your nectared wine, But alone you must drink life’s gall. Feast, and your halls are crowded; Fast, and the world goes by. Succeed and give, and it helps you live, But no man can help you die. There is room in the halls of pleasure For a large and lordly train, But one by one we must all file on Through the narrow aisles of pain.

E.G.R. had tremendous range. In "The Sea Wolf" 1941, he played Wolf Larsen captain of the hell ship "Ghost" . Larsen, the main character, a combination brute and intellectual, was captured very well by Robinson as most everything he did was a memorable performance.

An unusual movie for McQueen, as he usually was the swashbuckling hero who won in the end. However this movie has little "physical" action, and he loses in the end. However McQueen pulls it off perfectly, which goes to show his skills as an actor.

I savour the late-career performances of Edward G. Robinson--a man who practically invented modern screen acting. His utter restraint--it is like watching a master diamond cutter at work--you just keep quiet and watch. McQueen ups his game about ten notches here--his own restraint is nearly impossible to believe--and there's not a motorcycle or souped-up Mustang in sight. That one bead of sweat slowly running down his face--and he is not tempted to wipe it away: that's how internal his character's drama is. No one anywhere is making movies like this. More's the pity...

"Zoe the Cat" - true about the odds if there was no cheating. However, it's left to the viewer as to whether that was a "set up" hand (i.e. not a random dealing). Someone already had tried to help The Kid cheat and he didn't want it. Who is to say that after The Kid turned them down, that The Man didn't cheat? I say it was a cheat hand, no doubt about it - given the odds of it being real, plus the foreshadowing of the cheating possibility.

You need to see the entire movie. They aren't mad at The Kid for betting big on a full house, they are mad at him for not cheating, which they wanted him to do. The Kid found out they were giving him good cards from a fixed deck, and he told them to play it straight and had them change dealers. So they were mad at him that he "had to do it his way" (i.e. not cheat). Ironically, the ridiculous odds of the final hand show that someone almost certainly then cheated on behalf of The Man. When you understand the "cheating" angle, you understand why that "impossible" last hand wasn't so impossible.

Tracy had box office credentials no doubt, but I can't imagine anyone for "The Man" but Edward G. Robinson, a powerhouse indeed. He is easily associated as the professional gambler, as some his previous characters are after the cash and go where the money is. McQueen had presence and plenty of it on camera, but going head-to head against E.G.R., a Hollywood legend and in reality a cultured man, was a daunting dramatic challenge. No one dominates E.G.R. on camera, it just "ain't" gonna happen no matter what cards your holding, he'll go home with the $$$,the scene and keep his crown... every time!

In the real world, only a crooked dealer would deliver Lancey that kind of winning scenario. Both players get their dream card into that fat pot. Highly unlikely.

Actually you've solved the riddle of the last hand. "Only a crooked dealer" is exactly what happened, even though the film does not say this explicitly. The odds of having that final hand were ridiculously long IF no one was cheating. But the possibility of dealer cheating was already raised in the movie, therefore it is the most likely explanation of that "impossible" final hand.
