In old Yuma one old retired man used the referendum system and stopped the building of a huge indoor sports arena for which they were about to put out to bid without any discussion amon the citizens. He got a bunch of retired guys to collect signatures and who were threatened with arrest and had their locations barricaded, etc. I complained about this to high ups in the city government and had my historic buildings “red tagged” a few days later informing me to cease and desist all of my activities immediately-which I ignored of course. His referendum was successful and had the projected sports arena put on the ballet and the project was defeated. Why? Because 1) the people weren’t consulted, and 2) the City of Yuma already had a large baseball stadium that has been sitting empty for 20 years and is used only one weekend each year! It was stupid and was pushed by “the Yuma Twenty” and their lackeys in City Government! Use the Referendum! Listen to Nader. Get into action locally. You have power-but only if you act! Just loving these men is silly! Love must Act-or it is just another self delusion. Jay Warren Clark

Why? Because they believe the status quo is just fine.

And it's no different here in the U.S. Someone shouts, "Lions, and Tigers, and Bears, Oh my!" and everyone volunteers to give up their Civil Rights and do what the idiots in Washington say! We have become a nation of sheep. Frankly I'm high up in the hills and have a field of view for 500 yards all around and that's how optimistic I am. @@hanleyk: Actually Nader mentioned it briefly and also said that they don't teach this stuff in schools. It is a system like a petition, perhaps by other names as well, where you go to your local government, city or county or I suppose even the state, and take out papers to collect signatures to put something on the ballet for example. I suppose you will have to write up the idea or your intention, etc., and then put people around the city to collect signatures. It's a way to go around government and act directly as and by the People. No one mentions it because the Powers-that-be are afraid of it--for obvious reasons. And if you go to the city office and they say they don't have such a system, don't believe them. People lie and in general the various bureaucracies, city, county, state, and federal feel nothing but contempt for the People. They are the new class of Lords and Ladies and most of them are really stupid and contemptible people. There is great power in this system, and there is no reason to be embarrassed about not knowing. People just don't get together and discuss what our situation actually is and what power we have to fix it ourselves. Add to that the fact that we are divided along phony Party Lines, as Nader also mentioned, and don't talk to each other. But we have all been lied to and need to repeat that like the times tables so that we can get back to the Biblical idea of what a Neighbor is, eh? Take care Kerry. Jay Warren Clark

I agree totally with Ralph. The left who has a chance through independent media to promote each other's causes, and what organizers are doing. But most independent progressive independent media i.e.. TYT "independent" media only want to promote their label, and promote right wing podcasts, Fox etc, under the false premise that they are questioning their beliefs. When actually they are promoting the right wing to get their viewership. So yes, Ralph is correct it's time to get away from explaining the negative of the right wing, something most of us are aware of, and promote the positive of the left wing groups, podcasts, organization, etc etc.

I have been to local caucus and community meetings where the process is consumed and dominated by a few persons who skew the conversation into pointless dithering. Their reasoning appears pointless and frustrates the attempts of many to discuss the problems which action by the candidate could better or remedy. And then one learns, they are on retainer by those whose intent is to disrupt any attempt to attack or to regulate the expansion of their economic power or economic conduct. This is the consequence of Corporate Personhood and of the allowing of the escape of those of enormous wealth from any taxation. I am afraid that the redress of grievances by the people of the nation cannot be had by civil means. Nor do I think such a redress will be had, given the the advancements in technology possessed by the uber elite of the empire to surveil, manipulate, and control the rest of us, and to control the choices allowed to us. Despite this, I hope that I am wrong and that Mr. Nader is correct.

This is on those of us who are here. No one else I was a Republican for a long time. At 18 years old I voted for Reagan. My first election. I believe that trickle down economics would work. It made sense to me. If the corporation's supply the jobs than they deserved tax breaks. They deserved special consideration. If the company does well of course that would mean that the employee does well. I couldn't have been more wrong. Our government needs to be overhauled. We have to get big money out of the picture. There needs to be a hard cap on every election. If it's violated then that person is out. Lobbyists are bloodsucking vampires. They need to be rained in. I voted for Biden and I'm glad I did. I'm an independent voter at this point and I have reengaged in politics. Only the people can fix this. We are the ones who allowed our government to be taken by people that have no interest in the American people.

As a Black Canadian who avidly follows American politics because it influences our nation's policies. I admire both Chris and Ralph, cause I feel they could make tremendous difference. But I despair that Americans only want to preserve the "Myth of Democracy" and the illusions Social Equality rather than committing to the Thinking and Policy Work necessary to make it a reality. I despair that BOTH Political Parties are able to recruit Black "Manchurian Candidates" who help them preserve the Status Quo. America can never become a true functioning democracy because of its refusal to deal with its White Hegemonic thinking that pervades its politics.

No system that lets the rich buy votes is an actual "democracy." The US is an oligarchy. The "democracy" part was for appeasement. The Founders were rich, white, male and mostly indifferent toward anyone else wanting a say in government, so they purposely created systems that systematically shut down the people's voices and surreptitiously gave all power to elites by establishing the undemocratic Senate and Electoral College. As Ben Franklin said, we have a republic - if we can keep it. And we lost it because it was always rigged to favor slave states, and it was always bought by special interests. Otherwise this nation would be heaven on earth. I've been angry at sellout people of color for years, but let's face it: That's where the money is, and if you want a hunk of it, forget race, fight for capitalism and worship the capitalists.
