Remember seeing him being picked in the La Rochelle game in December and I just knew jacques nienaber picked him to do one job and that was chop all those massive La Rochelle players and one of main reasons Leinster won that game

He was Josh VDF before Josh. He was starting to become first choice at Leinster and Ireland before his injury. Delighted he is back, and hoping he gets picked for SA tour or Autumn games

This is basically old school rugby union tackling (pre Rugby League defensive coaches) done extremely effectively.

technically excellent player just feel so bad that he came through in our best ever spell of producing back rowers

What ever happened to Conners at international level? I remember when he broke onto the scene around 2020/2021 he was getting man of the match awards on debut, setting tackle records and looked set to be a main stay for years, now he'll be 28 next week and is still only on nine Ireland caps. I know we're producing world class back rowers at a rate of knots at the minute and no one is taking the 7 jersey off JVDF for a while but it could be argued - playing extreme devil's advocate - that 7 is a slight area of weakness too. VDF is phenomenal of course but he has been the starting 7 for every match we've played in the last year bar three; Doris against Italy in this year's 6Ns and for the WC warm ups and POM against Romania at the WC. Now both Doris and POM are world class and can play seven admirably but neither of them are really specialists there as far as I know and I'd always prefer POM at 6 and Doris at 8/6, plus the nailed on back row replacement seems to be Jack Conan who again isn't a out and out seven. Not to question Farrell who deserves all the praise we have and more but there does seem to be a lot of faith being put in VDF always being fit and available, I'm just surprised we've not seen a firm understudy/heir apparent come through under VDF especially when the likes of Conners are out there.

@@gavanshanley9135 Ah, that rings a bell now that you mention it actually. Let's hope he can fight his way back into the mix and have a significant international career to go with all the provincial accolades. Would be tragic to see another class 7s career marred by injuries so soon after Leavy.

His technique really is fantastic. Head is behind the ball carrier not in front. A very difficult skill

@@canadiancontent352Guy below pointed out that he's doing a PhD in tackling! Early to be saying this like but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up a seriously good coach in a fair few years time.

so much efficiency in those tackles, swings his feet around with momentum and uses his bodyweight to haul 'em down all whilst ending up pretty much on his feet again ready to go. Show this reel to any youngster and the HIA argument will be dead in a few years.

The technique is flawless, not good, not great. *flawless.* as someone who played rugby for many years getting your head placement perfect like that is so tough, things move so fast and if you get it an inch wrong he either slips the tackle or your bell gets rung. incredible how he nails it every time.,
