The Choice 2020: John Bolton (interview) | FRONTLINE

John Bolton served as national security adviser to Donald Trump from 2018 to 2019. He was previously the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and is the author of The Room Where It Happened: A White House Memoir.
The following interview was conducted by FRONTLINE’s Gabrielle Schonder on July 31, 2020 during our reporting for the “The Choice 2020: Trump vs. Biden” - FRONTLINE’s critically acclaimed election series featuring the interwoven, investigative biographies of both presidential candidates. It has been edited for clarity and length.

I am a history graduate. One of the reasons why I didn't feel Trump was capable of doing the job is just what Bolton is referring to here- Trump doesn't know anything about world history or even national history, nor does he care to learn. I don't think he is capable of learning history and he doesn't really care to learn anyway. How can you have a president who doesn't know history? He makes foreign policy decisions without knowing these things. I find that to be absurd. It really sets the nation back.

@GunslingerXXI parts of this are right... USMCA has very little substantive changes over NAFTA. The relationship between Israel and the Arab states is a formalization of the status quo. It is nice they are putting their arms dealings in writing rather than winks and nods, but whatever. About the only thing good is the Lipservice he has paid to trying to end the endless wars.

@@burnindownthehouse yes, that is HIS opinion, the opinion of a war criminal. He made a claim in the positive, then failed to prove that claim. You have done the same. Why are we still in Korea, TODAY? Its a pretty good question, and the answer probably doesn't have much to do with what happened in 1945. John's just angry he didn't get the war in Iran hes been tring to start for around 2 decades.

@@johnnytsunami4186 Yeah, you're still not understanding what I am saying. My claim (which is backed up by any advisor who worked for Trump) is that he does not know world history, he does not understand world history, nor does he care to learn about world history. So I am unsure what you are arguing with me about. Are you claiming the advisors are wrong? Are you claiming that Trump is somehow a history buff? I am not sure what you are trying to say here.

I agree. Never saw Bolton say very much until recently. He's intelligent and thoughtful. I was disarmed by it. Got me thinking about these political divisions... this guy "grew up" (figure of speech, I know he's older than that) in the Reagan administration, so to speak. Those people weren't political figures to him - they were his mentors. And I don't doubt that a number of those mentors were decent, well-meaning people. Coming around to see the poison that's taken hold of the Republican Party, something painfully obvious to me for so long, and something he was also a party to, no pun intended, has got to be difficult. The guy has been speaking up, thoroughly. Biggest complaint I hear, why didn't he say this during the impeachment... I ask, would it have mattered? I doubt it. He's speaking up right before the election, when it's most likely to have an impact.

If we get that orange man out of office, it'll definitely be worth it. I'll shut my mouth about Uyghur Muslim internment in an instant if I can hang with my favorite comrade Xi JinPing and work on overthrowing Trump and that racist, sexist, capitalist system that's oppressing us all. I think that there is only one minor yet detrimental flaw in your analysis Mr. Bolton, He does have a very simple and dangerous philosophy. And that is to be the "winner" in the zero sum game of life, to gain and maintain money and power at all costs, with no compunction about destroying anything in the process, including our democracy and our very lives. And like every other narcissistic dictator, every decision he makes is literally based on that underlying philosophy. I think you meant, and in fact you did say, that he has no complex analytical abilities as it applies to a foreign strategy, but I believe that you might agree that that is quite different from having no philosophy. Sorry for seeming pedantic, but that does change our understanding of just how dangerous this man is. Sorry to piss on your "one silver lining".
