In 1921, my father went to work at age 12 in a coal mine in Kentucky. Incidentally he was a WHITE MAN, BORN IN USA. He retired from coal mining at age 62 in 1971.

My back started hurting just seeing those kids crawling into that mine! That lady helping those children is an angel. The craziest thing is that most of those mine owners won't allow their own children to do such manual work. The other lady with her "suspicions" knows exactly what's going on, and she's working for the benefit of the various mine owners, and definitely not the children.

My eye drops when the two boys voluntarily go with the lady..I think they are very tired working everyday..so they decided to go and live that place...thanks to the NGOs of helping those kids for their better future..

Many people get drunk not because of his lavish life but because of their hard work which tear the skin and burn their heart. Believe me most labour get drunk because of the pain they suffer from the work they do whole day. They won’t to sleep that night so that they can work tomorrow. So they get drunk and sleep . This turns into a habit slowly it turns into addiction which will make then unable to work .

Thouh I definitely do not agree with child labour, it's important to see both sides of the coin before coming to a conclusion. While it's morally wrong to employ children, the thing is that these children have no-where else to go. If they don't work, they often don't eat. It's easy for people sitting behind a computer declaring child labour is inhumane and evil, however unless we set up safety nets for those children to live if they do not have the opportunity to work, the alternative would be much worse (starvation and maybe even death). Of course I don't agree with child labour, I believe that they should be in school working on their future, however the truth is that many children just don't even have that opportunity and this is the only way they can survive.

"Westerners" started out like this too though. Think about the gold miners in California back in the 1800s, etc. America for example, is a more "developed" nation, it's not that we are smarter or stronger or anything, but we've developed safety institutions, organizations that improve the quality of our workers lives and the equipment we use. These things have gone far in improving our working conditions over the last 200 years. Yes we have it much, much better in the west. But it was not always that way.

I don't know what you're implying. I think the fact that this kind of mining is "illegal" tells us a lot about the intelligence of their regulations. They are obviously trying to save lives. In America there are all sorts of "illegal" businesses that continue, despite the safety issues. We have a better developed "enforcement" system here in the west, so if there were a bunch of people using children as miners, chances are they would get shut down much faster in the west.

I know of a coal mine that has 500 families in Meghalaya before this and the other documentary from ABC News USA documentary was published. The coal mine was closed by the government for 2 years now and the many families who use to earn a living from coal mining have suffered the most. Did the government and NGO's help any of them? NO! The government even made a lot of money from the Paris Agreement last year. Will that money from the EU goes to these people? I doubt it. What they didn't show are the thriving communities in this region. They did mention a little about other children going to school. Yes, there are schools, playgrounds, football fields, and even temples and churches. Children in these places are better off than those rich kids who spend most of their time in front of an electronic device trying to figure out how to be popular on youtube. The winners from this kind of propaganda are the TV networks, NGO's who are looking for more funding and corrupt government officials.

There is a thin line between bravery and stupidity. What will happen if father die in mine? The mother will be left with bunch of children. What next? Children will have to work. There must be safer way to provide for their family. But seems that those people just aren't able to change their faith. Born in poverty, die in poverty. The problem with India is the mentalilty of its people and approach to work. I work with some and the job is just done very poorly and nobody cares. Thats why the country looks like it looks. Attention to details is non existent. Chinese are better employees and they are now second economy in the world.

Really sad to see children going into force labor. I think population is the real cause of poverty. We need to revise the human laws or ideas about the issue on having children.

No. But they will have more information and thus able to start businesses. Such as realizing they can open restaurants and message parlors and schools to help tutor those going to regular schools like the way the Chinese community teaches chinese in chinese schools in america or English in china. It helps gives ideas to the students. That's how most do it.

Yikes. So risky to take these boys from their home like this. It can either go good or really really bad. Likely will be worse for at least one of them sadly. I hope they fit in with the children alright and are grown and well now. They were trafficked right out of their home.

I used to see these coal mines everytime when i travel to Meghalaya.Now the Indian Government has banned mining of coal in these areas.

Thank god they have eachother. And that familiarity of at least one person they know. One person whos always been there. When everything else is changing. They will have eachother for support and love. And that gives them the strength they need keep moving forward.

I live in what was a mining town and our technoligy killed theres in ike the 1800s

Recently visited a Welsh coal mine, hearing exactly that, some children as young as 6. My Grandfather died young because of working in the mines as did his Father before him. Awful to see kids still having to do this to survive today.
