Many of Philippines' 5.5 million child workers are risking their lives digging for "Dirty Gold" in unbelievable conditions. Desperate men and children scour underwater mine-shafts in this terrifying report.
Breathing through nothing more than a thin pipe connected to an air compressor, going 30 foot deep underwater for hours in search of gold is all in a day’s work for 16-year-old Gerald. "I'm afraid, if the earth collapses, I will get buried underneath" says the teenager. Surrounded by rock walls in the pitch black darkness of the water, the men chip away at walls for 3 hours. They find no gold. For many like Gerald school is a distant memory, and illegally diving for gold the only alternative to starvation. Hundreds of deaths by electrocution, drowning and even the possibility of Mercury poisoning have had little impact on compressor mining activities, which continue un-policed and unregulated. There appears little hope of change on the horizon. "If I could only give job opportunities - I will take them away from compressor mining. It is just that I have no alternative at this point" says Ricarte Padilla, Mayor of Jose Panganiban - Philippines' so-called "Gold Coast". As it is, the children and family men unearthing 60-80kg of gold per month see the lions share of wealth disappear into the Chinese black market.

Watching the father cry at the end broke my heart 😔😢 Imagine his many people in the world go through the same thing everyday. Sitting there and reflecting on your life and how you will help your family survive through the harsh lifestyle. We must be grateful for what we have at any point in our lives and also help those in need while we have our time here on Earth. 🙏🏾
It is interesting how many people see this and suddenly feel grateful for their own, more comfortable poverty. But you shouldn't feel guilty or ungrateful for being able to have decent living conditions, you should be angry at the economic and political powers which deny people basic needs and force them to work in horrible conditions for just a few dollars. We are not the villains for having clean water and basic education, but the people who trade dirty gold with massive profit margins are. Every person on the planet could have good living conditions and a chance to live up to their full potential, we have the technology and the resources. But now some people get superyachts and gold-plated Rolls Royces, while others get mercury poisoning and premature death while mining the very same gold.

These kids embody the soul of a grown person! They are so mature and understanding! Not to sound weird but it remind me of how my grandfather used to tell me how he and my grandma had to drop out of school in elementary to just help there family working on the railroads and in fields. As he got older though he went to the army and then got all his education done. And became a teacher! And is fluent in 3 different languages he is one of the smartest strongest people I have ever met!
I sometimes make my pupils watch these types of documentaries and let them realize how lucky they are being able to attend school, play, and eat enough food.
This is heartbreaking. We've no idea how lucky we are sometimes.

honestly, i never understood the fact that people in thrid world country always bring the most kids,its not a bad thing, unless you know you are capable of feeding all those mouths and in the end the mother just bares more children and more children while the man is forced to rosk their lives for the money because as a guatemalen ive been to the country in some of the most rural parts and over there i first hand saw how most of the males there suffer and in the end its mostly the dudes fault because the woman never knew what she was getting into, and it just pisses me off because in the end the kid will have to do the dirty work, the kid will have to sacrifice their education but in the long run the kid will be the one working for the woman once again.
@andro1096

@@canofsouls282 there's so many things wrong with your paragraph but I'm just going to point out one major point, which is that it is the *people's fault* that these children are suffering... which is really just not true. It is not their fault, but rather the fault of the government/higher power for even putting them in these situations, they are victims just as much as their children are. **People in these third-world countries have so many children because of their poverty.** They do not have the money to afford a proper education or how to finance their savings, combine that with lack of knowledge about sex protection and you get families who keep having children because 1) they don't know how to prevent it, 2) they need the helping hands, and 3) lack of understanding of how to finance. Those kids are going to grow up and do the exact same thing their parents did to them because they don't know any better, even with education, the upbringing of a person affects their future the most.

@@andro1096 lol no, first i never said people who are poor have kids because their poor secondly where is all this shit coming from? yeah your first point was reasonable but I doubt your knowledge in what situation their in is any different of some casual dude plus if they know their not protected whats the point of even having sex if they know that their gonna bring a kid in such a terrible place? at least have 2-1 not 12 or 15

This is why charity is important, if you want to wait for the govt to care for yourself and others, you’ll be waiting a painfully long time. However if individuals are charitable because they received charity, I think most people would be more likely to be the help rather than assume it’s the govts job. I am not saying it’s not the govts job, but I am saying if that is their job they don’t do as well as we can do it ourselves.
