Yank here. Married an Mc'r lass in 90, and had my bachelor party at the Hacienda. The city was the center of the music universe at that time, and the Hacienda was its epicenter. Had twenty plus American friends with us, and to a person they each describe their week at the M'cr clubs as one of their life's great moments. Music has never sounded better...

I was 18 when this came out. The whole Manchester music scene and dance music culture (that kind of went along with it) were so revolutionary at the time. Most young people were still driving around in their Ford Capri's, fighting getting drunk and blasting soft rock. People on my estate mainly had mullets and tight jeans. Looking like these guys was brave, even in Manchester. I remember going into a pub in baggy jeans, a flowery shirt and a shoulder length bell cut (like the keyboard player out of Inspiral Carpets) - I thought I was going to be killed.

SO much good music from Madchester (Charlatans, Mondays, Roses, Inspirals, Dragons, Turtles, etc), the Scousers (La's, Farm, etc), The shoe gazers (Ride, Swervedriver, Curve, Chapterhouse, etc). Then you had Bristol smashing it (Massive Attack, Tricky, Portishead, etc). It was the heyday of Hip-Hop too & even dance music used to be good back then!! Who can forget Castlemorton? I remember when I first heard this song early August 1990 and I thought at first it was a cover of Deep Purple's "Hush" because their intros sound very similar to each other and I rushed to the record store the very next day and bought the CD single import w/the 3 bonus songs. All you guys longing for the 90's, I feel your pain. But when I hear this, it sounds very much like the 60's music I grew up on and love so much. Someone pointed out the similarities to Deep Purple - Hush. That's exactly right. That keyboard sound, that's pure 60's. More of a basic, stripped down sound. Then the 70's happened, and everything got blow dry polished (Eagles, Journey, REO Speedwagon, Styx, etc) But, thankfully the 90's rediscovered the 60's. and rescued us from that corporate garbage.

Actually, punk is what happened . . . which faded into all the post-punk acts of the late 70s, which bled into the New Wave of the 80s, which puts us right back here. Sure, there's a clear and heavy 60s, psychedelia influence here, but it's been rinsed thoroughly in punk's dirty water.

Same here, but my experience was initially with the music of Morrissey, The Smiths, The Cure and New Order in the 80's when I was a teen and the Madchester scene in the time you describe when I was 21 and in University! We would go to a place called "The Alaskan" (Think The Hacienda in Manchester, but place it in Mexico on the border with Texas!) and dance the night away! Here in the U.S> they played pop crap, but in the club scene 5 miles south of us, we could dance the night away and celebrate the New Wave, Alt, Madchester, Acid House, Industrial scene, etc... Just as if we were in Europe! xD

Tx to The Charlatans for this masterpiece 👍👌!!!

What can I say, probably my favorite song of all time. I remember when I first heard this song early August 1990 and I thought at first it was a cover of Deep Purple's "Hush" because their intros sound very similar to each other and I rushed to the record store the very next day and bought the CD single import w/the 3 bonus songs. The sound totally transcended my mind and have been hooked on it still, It is the key to my universe.

This was on my college jukebox when I was 16 😊 My eldest son is now 20 and won't listen to today's stuff...I say 'we got Charlatans, you get Stormzy' - he's like 'I know mother, you had me too late!' Got in his truck the other day to find him playing PWEI - priceless! He's making memories to the same stuff I did 💗
30 years ago... Sounds as fresh today as it did in the spring of 1990.

Superb band who suffered massive adversity and still managed to tame an entire generation, sleep well gentlemen and thank you love you blokes.

One of the best indie tunes ever!
Belting tune, timeless! Takes me back to the Kickers/flares days, baggy Chipie t shirt, long floppy hair, awaydays at football then a rave after, unless we'd been nicked at Liverpool for not being from there by some jobsworth twunt who probably encouraged his kids to sign on. Happy days, you had to live it to love it.
Takes me back to mix tapes and Doc's. If you weren't a teenager then you will never know how cool that was.
This song still sounds good after all these yrs in 2020 Amazing
I hear this, and I'm immediately transported back 20 years .. the summer I listened, on repeat, to this song, and anything / everything by The KLF. Music is a time machine! 💓👏💃
When U2's guitarist says that this track in particular and the music scene from here in general makes you up your game is high praise indeed
These groups prove that the eighties and nineties will rock forever!!!! Love it all 👍🏻
Utterly brilliant. End of.

Wow…. It’s 1989 again; I’m back on campus of Venice High School; short surf trips to the beach; skating on the board walk and listening to KROQ radio in my car; driving along with my friends… I miss my friends.
One of those rare songs that you love the very first time you hear it.
The charlatans are so underrated it's criminal.
God, I miss 90's England. Listening to tunes like this as a teenager. Summers that never ended, playing out until 11:30 at night and the sun still not fully set, water fights, flirting with girls. Felt like a different world, care free and able to say whatever the hell you wanted to say.

Just as if we were in Europe! xD

RIP Gorgeous GORDON BURLEY, Sad News passed away at 40 recently. Great film, love it watched it for years!
Tx to The Charlatans for this masterpiece 👍👌!!!
Definitely my defining tune of this unforgettable music era . Cannot say enough how much this means to me 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😎

Agree. I was in my late 20’s, seeing amazing bands and dancing to amazing music like this.
Way way underrated band..
One of the early nineties anthems!
Ironically, this is the only one I know of the Charlatans' repertoire.
I remember the bouncing dancefloor in Manchester Ritz on alternative Monday night vibrating like a bastard when that deafening bass guitar solo break comes in. Just when you think it ain't gonna get any better the drums kick in and then that guitar solo take the atmosphere through the roof!!!
Criminally underrated!
Anthem of Britpop's. Playing a solo on a bass guitar, the introduction of a drummer and followed by a guitar .... it's brilliant.
I used to put this song on repeat and listen to over and over and over really loud! I made all my friends listen to it also, only some of them were able to appreciate it.
Bass and drum groove is so tasty it hurts.
The bands coming out of Manchester during that time were very talented and very under appreciated here in the states but people with an ear for music knew they were killing it
I'm sat here in Wales....love it...what a song and not a tune..best song ever......😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🎉.....
man, this takes me back, stoned off my face most days, good music, good times. happy days.
