Straight to the point, no steam no whistle! I was wondering that how can I shorten some used chain without high priced special tool, and now I know it! Thank You sir!

This reminds me of when i was repairing my broken chain back in 64. I was strip cutting Swamp Spruce, using a XL-12 Homelite. Will my chain broke and i didn't have one of these handie dandy breakers. I used a flat file, hammer and a nail, i used these tools many times. When the Grenberg vise grip chain breaker came out i bought one. This works very good, i could fix the chain on the saw in minutes. I would take a old chain apart so that i had pile of repair links. When you have a chain thats half wore out and it breaks, you should never use a new repair link. If you do, your chain will tighten and loosen when going around the sprocket. I never used a new repair link on a used chain. The old links work better, keeps your chain cutting smooth.

Great video and exactly what I needed. I bought a few chains which are 1 link too long. I figured it wouldn't be too hard and this video illustrated this perfectly.

The use of a ball pein hammer is noted, and correct, HOWEVER the peining of a rivet is normally done using the round head to pein (peen) the rivet. Not the flat face as shown. Grew up back in the day when rivets were used, especially on sickle bars putting new sections in.

thanks for the memories. I’ll bet I changed a thousand sections .on our 7’ John Deere # 5 mowing machines. We cut, raked, baled, and hauled to the barn on 50/50. Or we d do all that for .10 a bale. ….

Nice job, why did you not use the ball side to mushroom the rivet, to round the head over, forming a mushroom, instead of the hammer head to potentially damage the pin. I guess the results are the same depending on your swing and technique. I used to build chain for Ace hardware in the 80's in college. We had a mushroom head spinning former to form the round mushroom head. They are nice for a nice uniform mushroom head. But I enjoy using my ball and peen, learning to control the ball and get it to do to the metal what you want. Kinda cool and fun I think, firming steel, but....back to chainsaws. Thanks, and I Just Subscribed. John..

I usually use a few file strokes to reduce the pressure required to punch the rivet out. A rounded tool makes a better rivet upset and most carried a punch with a cavity in the end for that purpose. Like the ball pein on the hammer you were using! A master link is a newer convenience that we didn't have to repair broken chains.

Have a new chain for a craftsman 16” chainsaw. It seems to be a half inch short, and saw some other videos but in the comment section there was any solutions. Perhaps you might have some insight. Stretch the chain? Thank you in advance and thank for this video. A DIYer learning something new awesome.

I inherited about a dozen or more old saw chains that are in disrepair. Is it worth it to try and clean them up and replace the components or is there something else I can do with them besides chucking them in the garbage

Your punch tip must be sharp and your surface must be very stable or it won't work. You can also take a flat file to remove a little bit of material from the rivets to make it easier on the punch.

With the peen of the ball/peen hammer you can tighten the rivets so much the link may not pivot enough to allow free movement of the joint.Either way's ok, just don't smack it to hard!

Use of phrases like, "...make sure you're using the right one... put it on the right way..." without explaining what the correct technique is really diminishes the tutorial value of such instruction.
