How do you get the rivet head to flatten out? Is there a special rivet tool that holds the rivet central when you spin a new one in? The rivet head is not flat on the new rivet installed but is rounded, not like the original. The one i got from Harbor Freight was real sloppy in the spinner shaft and real sloppy in the threaded thrust hole. I found the spinner head in this tool to waver off the rivet head on turning it even though i held the thrust handle centered tight to the rivet head. I feel there should be a new type spinner rivet socket that has a small center hole to align it correctly before starting the spin and as it spins in the hole keeps the rivet straight and the socket should have a flat center with beveled solid rounds with angle ridges around the bevel to roll the sides of the rivet head down accurately, but of course i am not the one that designs them but if i did it would be this way.

+John Doe If the rivet tool is worn then this can cause it to slip. A new anvil does have a small center to align it and this anvil should be replaced as and when.

I think i got it now but what was happening was when i did the turn it would rotate off center and i found the alignment was off horizontally. I bent the tool and it screwed straight.

+Aurélien Carnoy its a bit of a fiddle with the right tools unless you are doing a chain a fortnight i would just get your shop to sort it.

+Aurélien Carnoy Sort of but you can make a mess of it as the rivets are so small. Much better as said below - get the right tools or take to your garden repair shop.

just grind broken links off using angle grinder, put new ones on using a ball pein hammer. just hit the centre of the preset to mushroom it over, and done.

Depends on your situation. If you have multiple length bars you can just keep a roll of chain and make whatever length you need. Also great for odd length bars.
