The Chad Smith Show with Taylor Hawkins (2009 - Part 1 of 7)

Join us as we go back in time to enjoy part 1 of this 2009 roundtable of the Chad Smith Show featuring Taylor Hawkins, Stephen Perkins, and Gary Novak. Watch the whole series, from part 2 to part 7, only on DrumChannel.com: www.drumchannel.com/originals/
In this very first episode, Chad, Stephen, and Gary attempt to explain the sheer enormity of Terry Bozzio’s kit to Taylor. They then put Taylor on the spot and get him to reveal how he got started with drumming. The group goes on to discuss how hard it is to get back to that “child-like, sponge place” where they can better themselves as drummers.

It's still hard to think of Taylor as being somewhere else other than behind his drum kit. His love for his kids is what I truly admired about him. Seeing them in Council Bluffs, backed in the tour buses, playing Frisbee with his kids and just goofing around. That impressed me so much and how he'd take Annabelle to morning shows at KRUQ (sp?) and call her his partner in crime for the day. The love he had for his family....it's a tough year. Real tough. Glad I got to go to so many shows. Foo Fighters mean the world to so many and God bless them. God bless Allison and just keep those great memories alive. Learn To Fly video----c'mon...tooo damn funny. Love ya Taylor.

This video had me all over with my emotions all over the place. Lots of great advice for players new and old. I was self taught drummer similar to Taylor. I would have loved proper lessons unfortunately they were just not easily accessible where I grew up. Today with KZread I’m going back to basics and trying to build and grow my skills as a musician.I want to learn absolutely as much as I can and constantly grow more and evolve my playing and eventually find MY SOUND!!! Not Neil Peart,Taylor Hawkins, Chad Smith Matt’s sound. When I have the ah ha 💡 discovery moment I’m going to shout it from the roof tops. Drums and music is for me when I’m the absolute happiest and the thing I love above all else. W/o music life would be very bland and nowhere near as good as it can be. Josh Homme said if you expect anything from music you expect too much. If no one heard me play drums of if the whole world heard me I would feel the same way about it. Obviously the dream is to make living from music or around it. I want my creativity to shine through and maybe help or touch others the way I have been effected and changed by the joyful noise of those who came before me and those in the future

He was obviously a great drummer and big rock music fan. I relate to him because we are roughly the same age and grew up with similar music interests. For instance, Taylor once said U2’s Larry Mullen Jr. and various 80’s pop drummers were big influences on him (as well as the heavy hitters like Roger Taylor, Stewart Copeland and Neil Peart). I also feel like Taylor was the type of guy I could hang with and talk music. I’m sad his wife, children and family no longer have their loved one around.

So strange for The Foos to lose Taylor not six months after The Stones lost Watts -- how heartbreaking and devastating it must be for Dave to have to mourn the loss of another bandmate (Pat Smear for the third time around)! I just watched an amazing and emotion-stirring live tribute version of The Smiths' "There Is A Light..." done by Johnny Marr on a recent BBC-6 performance dedicated to Taylor! Speaking of the late Charlie Watts, I had a similar experience to Taylor's the first time I got behind a drum-kit. Now, I'm not a professional drummer or musician of any kind (although I am a rabid music fan of many genres and did have Rock & Roll dreams as a kid but never put the sweat equity needed into making those dreams manifest into reality), but one summer in the late '90s when I was in my mid to late 20s (Taylor and I are almost the same age, by the way -- myself older than him by about three months), I was at a day-time house party being held by musician friends of a friend and then-co-worker of mine (he was the head chef/kitchen-mgr., and I was the dishwasher/prep-cook, of a now-long-defunct restaurant/bar/roadhouse local to me, and his musician friends were food-service colleagues of his at previous jobs he'd worked at). They were jamming in their spacious kitchen/dining room which had an upright piano against one wall and a basic 6-pc. drum-set (bass, tom, snare, cymbal, hi-hat, and cowbell) in the middle of the floor. During one of several breaks between sets, when the real musicians were elsewhere, I got a wild hair up my ass and sat down behind the kit and just started doing a basic beat while randomly hitting the various pieces of the kit (cowbell included), savant-like, eventually settling on a pattern that sounded very familiar, but I annoyingly couldn't quite place it. After awhile, though, I figured it out: "Honkey Tonk Women" by The Stones!!!

Taylors a natural, intuitive...i relate..I'm same way, seems normal to me, and I taught my self on guitar drums and bass before the internet I'm still learning drums the most.. and everyones always saying how good I am but like Taylor, it's the perfectionists In the artists/musicians that makes us strive to be better so we are never completely feel like we are that great cuz there's always room to improve. Chad Smith is one of my favorites drummers along with Taylor and Dave of course but the most underrated drummer Ive to get credit it's Jose Pasillas from the band incubus. You wanna watch a gold rock show type in incubus alive at red rocks 2004!!! You won't regret it.

I came to the same conclusion. Playing guitar is going to take a long time. Started when i was in my late teens. Did not give it as much attention as i should if i wanted to play it. I had no direction. No instruction. I knew and taught myself all the chords. Started doing scales but no music came out. It was just dry stuff. I wanted to play music but i could not let it out with the guitar in a way i heard it in my head. Then i broke my picky fretting picky finger. That pretty much put a stop to it. 30 years later and covid hits the world. I give guitar another go during lockdown. I vowed to take it serious this time and put time in. Still not happy with nothing coming out of me otehr than the same old shit noodlign stuff i knew and made up. Even sticking to a practice routine using justin here on youtube i felt like prpgress was slow and i did not have what it takes. I also did not want to spend decades on it before i got anywhere. It is not that i was inpatient. It just took too damn long. Then tayor dies. Shit. I am getting old now. I said i would try drums. I promised myself and taylor i would give it a good go. Bought a cheat ass almost toy like electric kit. I knew that i wanted to continue doing this when i managed to hold down the standard rock beat with kick on 1 and 3. with the snare in between Whoa. I am making music and holding down a beat. It was almost as if i was in some meditative state with the beat just going and going. I tried hard to stick to the click track. I was hooked. This kit had to go and i needed something more responsive as it was missing notes on the high hat. Cant play like that. So i bought a used alesis command mesh that was in very good condition.. I practice at least an hour a day and now am making progress that i can see, hear and feel. I am a drummer now and i got my start the day taylor died. I am 52 years old. It is never too late to start.

@@i.vuk1668 Actually, an overdose has not been confirmed, only that ten different controlled substances was in his system, and it hasn't even been confirmed that he took a dangerous or fatal amount of any one of those substances. Therefore, saying that Taylor Hawkins died of an overdose is at this juncture conjecture. That said, this video is document of a conversation between four legendary drummers having an in-depth conversation about their craft. That one of those drummers happened to have passed away, and that the cause of death might have been drug related, is no reason to open that can of worms here. If you ask me, the drug conversation doesn't belong in this space at all... unless of course you've got a judgmental agenda up your sleeve... in which case I'd recommend you search for the latest Ted Nugent rant, if you're looking to focus on negativity as a way of remembrance.
