One of my favorite memories is when my mother took a box she had from a store and cover it with white paper and then put some red hearts on it and the corners and then put a string to go between them and then put over my head so that it hanged from my shoulders, and I was then a playing card with red hearts. I must have been about 4 years old. Those of some my best memories of Halloween

These guys, never a dull moment 🙏 I will be making this a new family tradition 👇👇👇 Halloween Soul Cakes Ingredients 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, sifted 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup butter 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg 1/4 tsp allspice 1/4 tsp salt 1 egg, beaten 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar Instructions Put the dry ingredients into a food processor and pulse to combine. Add the butter and pulse until it is crumbly, similar to cornmeal. Combine egg and vinegar and beat. With the motor running, pour the beaten egg and vinegar through the feed hole. Pulse until well combined. Turn out into a bowl and press together into a ball. Chill for 20 minutes Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Lightly flour a clean, flat surface and roll the dough out to 1/4-inch thickness. Cut into large rounds using a cookie or biscuit cutter. Mark a cross shape into the top of the cakes with a knife. Place the cakes onto the baking sheets.Gather the scraps together and roll again until all the dough has been cut into cakes. Bake, one sheet at a time, for 12-15 minutes, or until the cake tops are lightly golden. Can be eaten warm or at room temperature. Store in an airtight container for about a week.

Halloween comes from Ireland. It is one of the oldest (thousands of years) commemoration of death and the other world. November 1st is the first day of winter. Before St Patrick brought the Good News to Ireland, the ancients marked the end of Summer and the beginning of Winter around November 1st. The word in Gaelic for November, is Samhain (winter). They carved a turnip as a lantern. They believed the Spirits walked the earth that night on October 31st. So the old pagan ways were a natural fit for the dating of All Saints and All Souls. I was told the Church changed the May date to go with the dying of the year and Autumn customs of Irish Samhain Eve customs. All the goofiness of Halloween comes from the pagan, but the Catholic teaching for honouring the dead is the new message of the Resurrection. We can laugh at the silliness of fearing death when we understand we are saved from the Resurrection and the message of Christ.. We can dress up as a ghost or witch as a cartoonish 'mocking' of fearful customs. The Mass and focus on those who passed away since the last Feast of All Souls comes after the fun and games and is the reason for the season. Bless you guys and Happy Halloween!

I get a bit annoyed the way modern pagans and satanists have hijacked the Irish name for November, and the name for May as well. They have taken words from our beautiful native tongue and tried to make them mean something sinister to the rest of the world, many of whom don't even realise we have our own language and it's far older than English.

I make little print outs of small Saint bios and on the back side it says hollow=holy, ween=Eve, Halloween. I rubber band them to all the candy. Though this year I’m torn, I’m considering not giving candy to scary nuns. The sacrilege breaks my heart, but then again maybe a little Saint bio could plant a seed.

I heard a homily on Halloween and the priest said we celebrate all those in Heaven on All Saints Day, we remember those in Purgatory on All Souls Day, but before all that, on Halloween, we remember the reality of Hell and pray we don't go there. He said that the Jackolaterns and costumes were ways to poke fun at the devil and show that we weren't afraid of him or of Hell. My understanding was that because we have hope in Jesus that He saves us from the fires of Hell, we can celebrate that we don't have to be afraid of Hell. To me it made perfect sense, but I never heard anyone else explain it like that. So I'm wondering if that is just an individual understanding and not actually part of Catholic tradition?

What too many people seem to not know is that "Hallow'een" is actually a shortening of "All Hallows Eve" , i.e. the evening before All Hallows or All Saints Day. I grew up in England in an Irish family; all we used to do then was games in the house like Bob-an-Apple and pray for the souls in Purgatory, then, the school would take us to Mass the next day because it's not a Bank Holiday in England like it is in Ireland. There was no Trick-or-Treating in England in the 60s or 70s nor in Ireland either.

I was really jnto it but i had a hard time listening to all this . Before my family moving to america we did All Saints Day. After moving accross the ocean i was forced to do halloween. Peer pressure etc. I never enjoyed it - it felt pretentious and boring even. Comparing it to the family holiday at home - Halloween was almost nowhere. At my age of 16 i lost my beloved granfather and after that i coukdnt do halloween. Running around and screaming and getting candy was painful while my family gathered in our american wood-frame house filled with our Catholic Eastern European spirit and prayed together and spoke about grandpa and how much we loved him. That was the last halloween i did in my life. After that we switched off the light by the door, we told people we dont do this sorry (what??????) And we kept our holiday of All Saints Day. But the best was when we left that madhouse and moved back home. Thank God.

This is a common misperception that has been perpetuated by a lot of people. There's really no good evidence for how Samhain was celebrated since the Druids didn't leave written records. Basically all we know about it is that it was a festival around this time of year. We are only left with archeological records, interactions between the Celts and Romans, and what monks wrote down of the various customs and legend cycles centuries later. A lot of people have made guesses in the last few hundred years about how the holiday was celebrated but most of it is conjecture since again we don't really have evidence. The date of All Saints was changed in the early 800s by which point most of Ireland was already Catholic. There really wasn't a need to appease pagans at that point.

The Oct./Nov. period is a time where the dead are emphasized. So All Saints' Day is for those in Heaven, all Souls' Day is for those in purgatory. But I believe that Halloween is a day of the damned. So there are three days of observation regarding the dead at this time of year, one for each category of the dead. So, the correct thing to do on Halloween, it seems to me, is to declare victory over the demonic--just as Christ did when he went into Hell. He declared victory over the demonic realm. He went there to tell them that he had won. So if you're going to celebrate anything on Halloween, the right thing to celebrate seems to me to be Christ's victory. I was a pagan for 22 years, and the true Halloween is actually when the dark moon in the sign of Scorpio, which can occur on any day each year between the dates of Oct. 20-21 through Nov. 21-22, depending on the phase of the moon. The dark moon is the most extreme phase of the moon's decrease, right before the new moon, when it starts to increase and goes into conjunction with the Sun, that is, within 9 degrees of the sun. The new moon is the conjunction of the moon and sun. Of course, I don't observe astrology anymore, but I'm telling you what pagans who do observe it are doing. Halloween is the high holy day of paganism because these people are very deceived and believe that the experiences they have at that time with the dead are experiences with so called "gods" and "goddesses." But they're actually demons and are not to be worshipped. Writer Ken Johnson (not a pagan) has theorized that Halloween is actually the time of year on which the Great Flood occurred. The flood killed the giants, that is, the descendants of the illicit union between fallen angels and human women. The giants are not eligible for salvation. They go to the place described in Jude 6, to the chains of darkness, which was made for the fallen angels, those who follow them, and for the souls of the giants, who are ineligible for salvation. So a "celebration" of Halloween is a celebration of the demonic. This place, that described in Jude 6, is illustrated in the incident when Jesus met the possessed man who lived in the cemetery in Gedera. The demons who possessed this man begged Jesus not to send them there before their time. And Jesus didn't celebrate these demons. Ryan was talking about Samhain. I've been to Samhain rituals. Here's one experience I had. I felt yanked upwards, and felt myself suspended in mid air in a dark place. I was suspended about what seemed to be the height of about a two story house. I was looking through some kind of thick barrier. The only thing on earth that I could compare it to would be those thick plexiglass, bulletproof windows at banks, and such. I know what I was looking thru wasn't plexiglass, but that's the only reference I have to compare it with. I saw a dark place, no fire, but just sparce, everything dead looking. In front of me in my direct line of vision was this horrible looking tree, all black, it's branches jutting out in bizarre directions and angles. I was looking at the tree when somebody crawled out from behind the tree on the ground, just a horrible looking being. And this being saw me and screamed for help, begging me for help. I couldn't hear the screams, but I could tell by the gestures that the being was screaming for help. But even if I had wanted to go down there I couldn't have because of that thick barrier separating me from that place. Then, as the being was screaming he/she was starting to be sucked, as if by gravity, towards a large, zig-zagged crevice/pit in the earth. And the pit moved itself, very slowly, sort of writhing like a snake. And being sucked towards this pit made the being more hysterical and desperate. Then I was back in the room with the other people at the Samhain ritual, and somebody was holding me up in her arms. I had passed out during the experience. I've since learned that is called being "slain in the spirit." So I don't believe in praying for the dead on Halloween, that would be praying for the success of the demonic realm. The correct days of praying to and/or for the dead are All Saints and All Souls.

I loved how you give the truth to Halloween . I feel that a lot of people don't research things like I do and I think a lot of people need to look at the background of all the things that are in our culture's not just Halloween but also Christmas also you know Easter . I feel all of us as children had grown up with these cultures and a lot of them make sense when you give them down to your children if you give them down in a proper way that you know you show them how to respect and maintain and give the right proper meanings to each of them like Easter you know Good Friday Christmas Halloween Thanksgiving Valentine's Day all these things and these cultures have meaning and purposes they're not evil and people need to stop saying that Halloween is the devil's day that's ridiculous because we all know that Halloween is nothing it's saints Day the Catholic saints day they need to understand that they need to stop doing this a people have you know I seen a lot of people have more control over things that they don't understand and they try to give it out to people and say oh look this is evil this is wrong you shouldn't be doing it you know we are not God we need to stop trying to control each other like we are God because that is not true you we need to look in their cultures we need to understand them and if you're that if you're that naive that you will not look at cultures like that then you need to keep yourself indoors and keep yourself away from other people that's how I see it because you're not doing nothing but harming everybody else over your negligence your lack of understanding your lack of research you know I meanyou know let's reach out to her neighbor's let's reach out to them you know on Halloween and not just on Christmas not just on anything like that you know actually reach out and say hey you know how can I help you cuz the good book says love thy neighbor as thyself you know reach out to them on Halloween find out you know did somebody did go you know and then burn a candle for them lightning that way help them guide them that's what we're here for that is exactly what God gave us here on this airport is to help each other you know once we start sharing that knowledge and sharing that wisdom and Sharon that happiness and that Joy maybe that can spread everywhere you know it always says you know that you take you know one person to do a change you know it might just take that one person to make a big change in a big difference so I do enjoy the honest honest truth about Halloween and I really enjoyed itto give an eye blessed that you know to God that you guys give out the knowledge and wisdom to everyone that needs it because a lot of them out there need it very much so I bless you all with all the lots of love and joy and happiness and thank you thank you for actually giving it out there I'm behind you all God bless❤ I rather show and others to follow blessed be God forever

Hi Guys, I feel compelled to correct some misinformation herein presented. Samhain, the Celtic festival of the dead was and is currently celebrated at the harvest time. It is most certainly a pagan festival where people believed the veils between the here and the here after was at it's thinnest. This was a time of year when the world experienced, in the minds of the ancients a small death as the days grew shorter and vegetation stops growing and withers. Not unlike the Mexican festival of the dead, fires were lit and foods were prepared and set out for propitiation of the soul of the recently departed, who might react badly otherwise This is the origins of the Halloween treats being given to avoid negative interactions ie, trick or treat. People would disguise themselves so as not to be recognized by the spirits specifically if they had offended or perhaps even hastened the death of the person. This is the origin of dressing up. When the church encountered these practices and beliefs among the pagans of the celtic world, they recognized that removing celebrations that were long held traditions and beliefs would not endear the faith to anyone so they incorporated the festival into Christian teaching and eventually Christianized it. This is how samhain became all hallows eve, remaining a celebration of the dead in all its aspects and how Saturnalia and Yule were incorporated into Christmas, embolc eggs and bunnies into Easter. All these traditions originated in paganism. Also the first jack o lanterns were simply hollowed out turnips used as lighting against the autumn darkness. I do not deny that the church took them and made them their own but we have to be honest about where they really originated.

Any book or website or article that claims that the ancient Celts celebrated Samhain on October 31 is perpetrating a lie. Samhain was a lunar festival of harvest, which means it fell on Oct. 31st once every 30 years. Modern Neopagans and Wiccans invented their own calendar through the 1970s and 1980s and they chose Oct. 31 to be the day for Samhain. It was a move on their part to put forward the false claim that Halloween started in paganism. This false claim was then In turn picked up by ‘churches’ of the Reformed tradition. All Saints’ Day (and therefore Halloween) originated outside the Celtic sphere of influence and had nothing to do with what the Neopagan and Wiccan claims are about its origin. In order for the Neopagan and Wiccan claim that Samhain is the origin of Halloween to be true, then Halloween and All Saints’ Day should have started in Celtic areas, which it did not. And since Samhain was a lunar festival of harvest, and could vary up to a month, the particular day of Oct. 31st held no special place or significance. So when sources claim that Samhain was celebrated on October 31st they are being dishonest and disingenuous; they are intending to deceive the reader.

We don't have any first hand evidence of how Samhain was celebrated though. We have a bit of information about when it took place and that it was a festival, but that's about it. Modern scholars still debate on the exact date. A lot of the sources that claim to know details about it come from the last few hundred years, and are basically people making conjectures from other sources or just pulling it out of nowhere. The druids who were the priestly caste of the Celtic pagans, had a habit of not writing anything down. So all that we have as far as early accounts are archeological records, interactions with other groups like the Romans, and later Irish Monks who were writing down mythic cycles and legends from oral history. There's also the problem that All Saints wasn't moved to it's current day until the early 800s, at which point Ireland was already largely Catholic. There wasn't really a need to appease reluctant pagans. A lot of the practices we see today probably emerged separately in the middle ages either from Church practice or from superstitions stemming off of that.

All Hallows’ Eve was celebrated on May 13th until the 7th century. October 31st has always been Samhain. The church moved it to, once again, co-opt a pagan festival.

The fact that it falls on November 1st today has nothing to do with paganism. Pope Gregory III changed the date to November 1st to commemorate a new Cathedral in Rome; eventually, the celebration was extended throughout the entire western church. Neopagans and Wiccans like to claim that the source of Halloween is the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced Sow-in). There are three basic problems with their claim. 1. The celebration of All Saints’ Day didn’t originate in Ireland or any other area populated by Celts or their descendants. 2. None of the days on which All Saints’ Day was celebrated had anything to do with any Celtic holiday. 3. The celebration of All Saints’ Day in Celtic regions is documented to be older than the documented celebration of Samhain. Furthermore, Samhain was a Lunar festival of harvest. That means that the day of Samhain can vary up to a month in difference from any Solar year day. The Neopagan version of Halloween doesn’t really come from ancient pagan sources. It comes from modern sources that pretend to be old but are not. These modern sources are simply fiction. When sources claim that Samhain was October 31 to November 1 in the modern Solar Calendar they are being dishonest and disingenuous. They are intendingto deceive the reader. Due to the differences between lunar and solar dates, on the average Samhain would take place exactly on October 31st only once in about every 30 years. When the reader adds into this the fact that the Western Calendar changed over from the Julian to the Gregorian at different times in different places, the reader can better understand how artificial the Neopagan and Wiccan claims are about Samhain. The Christian Church didn’t get Halloween/All Saints’ Day from the pagans, the pagans are trying to claim that Christians stole from them. But the Neopagans and Wiccans cannot even get their calendars straight. And they are hoping that the reader doesn’t notice how weak and embarrassing their claim is. Any book or website or article that claims that the ancient Celts celebrated Samhain on October 31 is perpetrating a lie. Modern Neopagans and Wiccans invented their own calendar through the 1970s and 1980s and they chose Oct. 31 to be the day for Samhain. It was a move on their part to put forward the false claim that Halloween started in paganism.

Remember the dead???????? Necromancing????? Educate yourselves

  • @RumorHazi

    Жыл бұрын

How about we start by educating YOU. Question: Doesn’t the Catholic practice of invoking the saints’ intercession violate the prohibition of necromancy in Deuteronomy 18:10-11? Answer: Deuteronomy 18:10-11 reads: There shall not be found among you any one who burns his son or his daughter as an offering, any one who practices divination, a soothsayer, or an augur, or a sorcerer, or a charmer, or a medium, or a wizard, or a necromancer. Necromancy is communication with the dead in order to obtain hidden or secret knowledge beyond our ordinary human powers, whether about the future or current events. It’s not mere communication with the dead. There are two reasons why we know eliciting secret knowledge from the dead is what Deuteronomy 18:10-11 has in mind. First, the same verses also forbid “divination,” and seeking a “medium,” a “sorcerer,” and a “wizard,” all of which have to do with an attempt to gain knowledge beyond ordinary human intelligence. Second, the subsequent instructions that Moses gives concerns a coming prophet. In verse fifteen, Moses says, “The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brethren-him you shall heed” (emphasis added). In other words, there is no need to go to mediums, sorcerers, wizards, or necromancers to gain knowledge, because God will send a prophet of his own. Since the context is about looking to God’s prophet and not to mediums, sorcerers, wizards, or necromancers, it’s clear that the prohibition has to do with seeking hidden knowledge beyond ordinary human intelligence apart from God. And since conjuring up the dead (necromancy) is one way of doing that, God forbids it. The Catholic practice of requesting the saints in heaven to pray for us simply doesn’t fit the necromancy bill. There is no request for a transmission of information from the dead to the living. In fact, the flow of information is the reverse. It’s the living that make their requests known to the “dead” (those who are alive in Christ). So, now you can actually say you learned something without going off half-cocked and slamming Catholicism when it is you who needed the education. You’re welcome.

It didnt , It isnt. Halloween is an Irish celebration of the dead. A party is given that includes apples, nuts, Barn Brack . It is pre Christianity. No the Irish would not give it up so the Church left it and its a real fun evening for families. No the Church brought in All Souls day not Saints day. It is Irish to its core. America has commercialised it no need for stupid costumes. Bring back the party it was an evening of fun.

There are no primary sources to confirm this. All the primary sources on Celtic Paganism just show Samhain was a holiday or festival celebrated around this time of year. They don't detail how it was celebrated (which isn't surprising since the druids didn't leave written records). There were a number of historians in the last few centuries who theorized what may have taken place, but again their suppositions are pure conjecture since we have no strong evidence to back it up. There is stronger evidence to suggest that a lot of modern customs originated sometime in the middle ages, which isn't surprising since the theme of death pervades across cultures this time of year.

@@verali164 I would never call St. Patrick a liar and of course he and his companions converted Ireland and likely saved much of Western Culture in the process. What I am saying is that we have no primary sources that detail exactly how Samhain was celebrated. We don't know the exact origins of a lot of the customs associated with the modern day. Some of them could have roots in Samhain, but they could just as easily have roots that developed independently later on. All the primary sources tell us is that Samhain was some sort of harvest festival celebrated around this time of year. Thus we can't say definitively that they came out of Samhain or what the purpose of them was. I understand that a lot of people claim this, but there just isn't evidence to back it up. The earliest source we have with Samhain being connected with the "thinning of the veil" comes from the 10th century, and that is more understood to connect with something similar to fairie. The sources that claim to know how the holiday was celebrated and what it meant date mostly to the 1800s and offer no proof. Again, it's possible that some of the traditions do date back that far, but we can't go around suggesting that they were part of pagan practices especially since they have almost certainly evolved since then.

There are no primary sources that detail how Samhain was celebrated. All that we know from ancient and classical sources is that it was a festival celebrated (maybe?) around this time of year. The traditions as celebrated now are more likely to have originated independently in the middle ages. Most places that claim the connection to Samhain are basing their information off historians from the last few hundred years who were themselves making conjectures based off of no evidence.
