Hot questions for you. I'm working on my c7.1. Need to remove the air compressor and would like to know if this is a timed compressor and do I need to do anything specific for that. The next thing is it appears that the adapter the compressor mounts to has a gear or something from the inside of it eating a hole in the adapter plate and has caused a big oil leak 🤔 not sure what or why this is happening. Any insight 🙏 👍🏻 love your videos thanks 👍🏻👍🏻

The cam/lifter situation is similar to the cummins isb engines. Any time you have to take the cam out in-chassis you jam wooden dowels in the top of the lifters where the pushrods sit and rubber-band them together so they don't fall. I find it funny that an actual cummins special tool is just 12 wooden sticks.

I feel you on the torx fasteners. I go the same rants when I work on 80s and 90s American rigs with sae, metric, torx, and Allen head fasteners all mixed together. It's so frustrating have every wrench and socket you own out and in use for one job. Completely impossible to stay organized. Makes working on my toyotas or older American stuff such a joy when you can quickly look at a bolt and know it's a 14 mm or a 9/16. And don't even get me started on Whitworth as I just about give up and pull out the Cresent wrench.

Josh, The C7.1 engine you showed on that 950M wheel loader is as you said a series turbo engine, however, is not the most sold nor commonly used on Cat machines or industrial engines, in fact all Small Wheel Loaders are equipped with the single turbo version, likewise for Industrial applications. Fuel System is provided by Denso. I’ll ask some friends about the trim files and I’ll make sure I’ll send them a link of your video rant on trim codes and fasteners, speaking of which, remember that nowadays all Cat engines smaller than C7.1 are designed and most likely built in the UK by the IPSD Medium Engine division.

Thanks for the video. Great channel. The rocker shafts look like typical old British automotive engine design (see Mini / Morris / Austin). If the push rods are retained in the lifter perhaps you could hold them in place by using something like a bulldog clip or similar on the push rod to hold the lifters up when removing the camshaft...

it's commonly done in data communication, to include a small block of 'check digits' along with a string of numbers to confirm that all digits in the string are correct, without simply repeating them. Look up 'parity' or 'CRC' for more info. the CAT 7.1 injector trim file number is actually a 120 bit binary number (like a GUID), printed in hex (base 16, ie hexadecimal, whose digits are all 0-9 or A-F), and the check digits are to confirm all of its digits are correct, so you don't get the entirely wrong file because you missed just one digit in your writing it down...

First time I've ever heard of hidraulic lifters on a C7.1 . That's maybe because they don't have emissions regulations, but I've learned something new today. I've rebuild a few of these engines because they tend to broke a compression ring and fail (on new machines with a low SMU). For what I've worked with, the C6.6 and C7.1 were the same engines with some improvements I would say like the injection system, engine size, etc

Yeah sucks on a c13 when the tiny thin gasket for the rear main seal housing is leaking.. gotta pull the trans, oil pan, bell housing, and rear motor mounts just to change this little paper gasket.. the bolt that hold that housing on are super small too and have a tendency of backing out. If you're(viewers) doing it id suggest brushing on some ultra black on the gasket(both sides) and blue loctite on the bolts or put ultra black on them because the bolt threads go through the housing and into the crankcase. So If you're a little overfilled oil can seep around the threads. Cummins ISL is the same design.

18:08 That is actually hexadecimal! Id be willing to bet it actually contains some form of calibration information directly coded in regards to the injectors. Nice if it is as there's no information to convey beyond that when they are changed. Bad, however, if you have to type it in. It looks almost like they are laser engraved with it at the time they are tested at the factory in terms that a machine would understand, but we don't.

i just got to say josh, not to defend the injector QVA/trim/etc code that these come with but knowing the formatting they come in (its an older style thats written in hexadecimal) i know myself that it comes in groups of "16" and its kind of easy to tell once you try to jam em in the ecm and it tells you that the trim code is "invalid", ive seen these in all kind of "older" bosch desings, i mainly keep seeing these in mitsubishi's and nissan's while the newer 7 digit are mostly in the vw side of diesel.... but yeah not making the spacing obvious or a demarcation is plain and simple lack of foresight...

I thought I was the only guy with this hatred of Torx in general. When they first started showing up, the idea looked okay. THEN, you give them a few years and some corrosion and no matter the tool manufacture there is going to be some problems. I'd take Allen or just 12 points over a Torx.

German engineers use inverted torx everywhere. Oh as for the injector number, that's what the 2D barcode is for scanning and it kicks out the number. I have tons of European pumps that spec with the 2D barcode.

Well that QR code actually gives you a 49-digit number, with 19 digits and THEN the 30-digit trim file numbers. Not sure what those extra 19 digits mean.

You get a 49-digit hexadecimal number, the last 30 of which are the fuel nozzle trim file number. The code on the injector he shows in the video stands for 040107282220401309373FB05F700162DF4F907240000FF30. Not sure what those extra 19 digits in front of the trim file number mean.

Fastner rants are very justified, i have an australian holden commodore and ford falcon as daily drivers, but everything else (previous daily drivers and project cars etc) were all japanese, the holden has the buick 3.8 (L36) they decided to go metric, yeah great, but not the normal sizes, on a subaru/nissan/toyota you need 8-10-12-14-17-19-21, 32 and 36mm for the subaru front axles (early 80's) On the damn buick v6 and ford you need 10, 11, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 34... Like cmon go a size up or down and make them regular sizes, who has a deep 11mm socket anyway. And then to top it off the intake manifold on the buick v6 needs a 3/8" imperial socket/spanner. (convinced they want me to get more excersize by continually walking to and from the toolbox, then going to the separate imperial tool box) and the ford uses those male torx bits at random also on the engine (lower thermostat housing is 3x 10mm and one i think 7mm torx male from memory) Reminds me of when you're restoring an old car and some assholes stripped a bolt and drilled it out and tapped "what he had" and put a bolt in, so your waterpump is 5 10mm bolts and one 1/2" or some shit. Utterly infuriating, especially in a situation where youve gone to the wreckers/diy auto salvage place to grab something with minimal tools so you dont have to lug a big toolbox plus the part back to the counter only to find that you didnt bring a deep 11mm socket or like a random 5 or 7mm that they decided to use to hold the coils on and then a different size again to attach the wiring loom...

The injector trim codes are almost certainly not serial numbers. If you think about it, it doesn't make sense for them to be. That would mean your programming software would have to be aware of every single injector ever manufactured, and constantly updated in real-time as they're produced. Not exactly feasible. Those injector trim codes are literally the injector calibration parameters themselves. They're stored as hexadecimal numbers laser engraved onto the injector. For example hex "00FF" is the decimal number "255". Each one of those little 4 digit blocks of hexadecimal likely encodes a specific variable about a particular injector characteristic. The 3406e likely needed fewer numbers because either the injectors were simpler with fewer variable characteristics, or were held to tighter tolerances with less variability.
