The carillon and bell concert of St. Babila Church in Milan (Italy)

One of the most important churches in the history of Milan is the basilica dedicated to the holy bishop Babila, which is located a stone's throw from Milan Cathedral (Italy). The bell tower houses a concert of five bells in D-flat major, cast in 1821 in Milan. Eight more bells in B-flat major were added to these bells in 1927 to form a carillon for the melodies. In this video, the eight bells of the carillon are rung and then the five that can ring in motion, according to the classical Ambrosian custom called concerto. The bells are locked upwards and descend, forming concatenated scales, and then return to the so-called glass position.

- 6+7+8+9+10+11+12+13 bells cast by Barigozzi in 1927
The importance of the church prevented the requisition of the bells, which all fell from the bell tower during the war because the church was bombed. The bells were not damaged in the bombing, while the bell tower collapsed and was later rebuilt. The first church was built in the 7th century on the foundations of an ancient pagan temple. The building was completely rebuilt in the 11th century behind the new city walls. Nothing remains of the original construction today, as the present building is the result of transformations between the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. The poor condition of the church after the Baroque renovations of the 18th century almost led to its demolition in 1826. The project was shelved due to numerous events, one of which was the start of the glorious Five Days of Milan that put the entire city to the sword, with the construction of barricades and more. Today, the basilica preserves the original 11th-century capitals, a work of considerable artistic value.

Eh si, qui siamo nel pieno centro di Milano, nel cuore della città a due passi dal Duomo e questa è una Chiesa davvero meravigliosa, sia per il suo esterno che per l'interno.
