The Captain sits down to interview the incredible Blues guitarist Matt Schofield - a player who the LA Daily News described with "In Schofield, the UK has produced the best Blues guitarist from any country in decades… head and shoulders above the herd". He has been ranked alongside the likes of Eric Clapton and Peter Green and its easy to see why.
In this wide ranging interview, they discuss growing up in Manchester, his musical influences and career so far, as well as what he's up to at the moment. He also takes us through his setup and showcases some of his amazing playing!

    Wanted to add that I have taken both of Matt's classes on Truefire. They are incredible. Easy to follow but complex enough that you can learn something new every time you work with the material at nearly every level. I gig at least once a week in a blues group and these videos have done a lot to help me evolve as a live player. And if you haven't seen the KZread video of his show at the Funky Biscuit (2017 11 10) please go check it out. There is something wonderful going on there and it is immediate. I am on a huge MS kick right now as a result of watching that show. Can't wait to see him live. Sorry to be a fanboy :)

    Nothing wrong with being a major fan. Im a huge fan also and he is a super player and a super nice guy to. A few years ago I pushed some festival organizers here in Australia to get him out for our jazz and blues festival. He was bloody awesome that night. I also got to speak to him back stage after his show and he is a very down to earth muso. You wont he disapointed when you see him live.

    Matt hotfoot from TPS...what a gent Matt is, so humble, honest a real guitar player. Dumped his large pedal board for what he really needs...a lesson the for us all. I love the fact that he uses a British made 'S' type guitar. All along, since 1970, I always wanted a 100 watt Hiwatt amp & 4x12, and now I know why...for the headroom...Thanks Matt :)

    Matt is one of the truly gratest talents today, not just playing the blues but evolving and refine guitar playing. We can only wish him all success and all possibilities to expand his ideas and productions not limited by tight budgeting which unfortunately today impact great artists. His Truefire courses are incredibly useful , practical and inspiring. Lee thanks for the talk, you have a career as tv host show, tactful and intelligent.

    I never heard of Matt but have been using his string set for a A year now. As soon as I used the set I knew I had the tone I was looking for. Had no idea that Matt was a blues man. The tone says it all. Great string set. 11 to 54 with a softer mid gauge. SRV style.

    Never heard of this guy; his thoughts on dynamics, etc. is very refreshing. Regarding "too bluesy for jazz, too jazzy for blues", these ideas never come from musicians, only fans or critics feel the need to so tightly compartmentalize art.

    Matt is the reason I started playing guitar again after putting it away for 17 years. I built a couple of Warmoth strats that match his spec, got a Two Rock, whole deal. I don't play lke Matt but listening to him, I figured out that it's okay to sound nice - to sound interesting and not harsh. I think he's a pioneer of sorts.

    Matt's a great guitar player who makes impressive music... that's all that should ever matter. Why are people so fixated on labelling every darn thing, and insisting that all artists be placed into easily identifiable musical boxes? Musical purists of any genre really bother me for this reason. Music is meant to expand and find new areas of expression... Hendrix himself used to be forever frustrated with folks going on and on about the old blues legends, and how he himself was supposed to fit into their idea of what the blues were supposed to be all about.

    Recorded music has little to no market value, and there isn’t really any space in the mainstream for this type of musician. Like when Bowie got SRV to play on his record, it pushed him out into the mainstream. That kind of opportunity doesn’t exist anymore. It’s not like Ed Sheerhan is going to start putting lead guitar breaks on his songs.

    Kebo Boke yor are right Kebo. But its sad. We slowly kill culture and real artists with quick mainstream “music”. I hope we some day find a way to support the good artists :-)

  • @tonedowne

    @tonedowne

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@goswo Yeah, the really sad part is that streaming has popped up and is an amazing resource for music consumers and creators, but very little of the money it generates goes back into investing in the production of new music. Companies like Apple and Spotify are tech companies, not music companies. So as much as record labels have always been bastards, it was at least their business to find and create new talent and invest in creating music. the new digital mediums are pretty parasitical in comparison.

    Hey Lee....if you can get Joe Satriani to 'drop by' the shop, maybe buy him a pint at the Drummond, I might sign all my wealth over to you (no chance, ha ha!) if you succeed. After all, you had Joe's 'pupil', Steve Vai over, and he was so humble....no harm in asking Joe over one day....as they say, 'who dares wins' :) You know, Mr J. Satriani is such a nice guy, he would probably say 'yes, I'd be happy to come yo your shop'. What a coup that would be :) If that ever was to happen, I would fly over from over 6000 miles away, where I live, to have a pint with you and Joe...sincerely.
