Eric Gales is the kind of musician that literally cries on stage when his improv' lead him towards unexpected emotional territories and when the audience goes with him at the exact same place. His playing is sick because he's so honest about his music that he accepts the "risks" to go anywhere as long as it's true to him. Immense musician! Total respect for the man!

I grew up in Memphis with Eric, and didn't know him personally, but my old keyboard player was his roommate at Governor's School in Tennessee. This is when Eric was in high school. I was told he was a super nice guy and just a pure born talent. I still remember when his first album came out. That thing was played a lot on local radio in Memphis, and we all knew he would be something great someday.

I'd venture that Gales was a bit like Keith Richards, in that he possibly had more of a POLICE PROBLEM than a DRUG PROBLEM. Like, he seemed to want to wage WAR against the police - a black man in Memphis?!? Oh yeah, there's a lose-lose scenario.

As a left handed player who plays right handed I have to agree that it helps to have the dominant hand doing the fingering. There was no left handed guitar available when I started. I never thought of playing upside down like Eric. Thank you for your honesty Eric. I wonder if artists like yourself talked more about drugs and the down side of the thug life if you could have a positive influence on youth.

Mike Bloomfield was a lefty who played right, Hendrix was a righty who played left. These are two of my biggest guitar heroes, so if I could go back I would get a left handed guitar so my dominant hand could be on the fretboard.

Buying left handed guitars, absolutely sucks! Every great guitar store has a couple of left handed guitars, if your lucky one might be decent. As I am teaching my sons, learn right handed for no other reason that buying a good right handed guitar is so much easier. Eric Gale, master!

He’s lucky he got clean indeed. I did too in 89. Here’s a story for ya that shows how bad it must have been; I remember playing a club in Nashville and his road crew came in wanting to sell his guitars/gear etc as the entire situation had drug/alcohol imploded and fell apart somewhere on the road and they had left him behind wherever it was, were broke and trying to get home, a very dark vibe! I said NO THANK YOU. Wouldn’t have bought his gear in that situation if they were asking $5 per guitar or amp. That’s just simply WRONG. Very weird and scary. So glad to hear he made it through all that darkness.

I'm left handed and played right handed for 5 years. After learning that I could tremolo pick way faster with my left, I bought a lefty guitar as well. It was a bit weird in the beginning but with all the experience I already had plus I should have learned lefty to begin with, the progress has been astounding. Playing left handed has also improved my right handed playing a fair bit too.

Love it. Eric you are great. When I heard you say around your house the first family member that got the Hagstrom guitar was on top. Man, I learned to play guitar in the late 60s and my parents finally bought me an electric guitar after I kept using my older sister’s Spanish acoustic all the time. Yep. They bought me a red Hagstrom. I loved it and I loved my parents for letting me play it on our farm house with my friend who played drums as just the two of us would jam. They let us set up a room on our second floor and play as loud as we wanted. Talking about some cool parents. Thank you Mom and Dad. RIP. Dang it, I sold that guitar. I wished I kept it as a piece of my music history. Bless you brother. Dang Eric you more than play the guitar. You make beautiful music. It’s like you meld with the guitar and become one. I love watching you play on stage too. It’s fantastic! Cheers.

Eric Gales , What an amazing talent with a more amazing story to how he has conquered his demons. Great episode! Thanks very much for sharing this. You're really coming into your own as a player with a distinct style too, captain, go, go, go! Great stuff. 🙏🏼 thanks again. Eric Gales and Eric Johnson share a similar lead lick/'signature' lead run(?)🤔.

Eric is an incredibly gifted musician and very humble and thankful human being. i remember finding him in the early 90s along with Joe Bonamassa and Kenny Wayne Sheppard when the new blues explosion hit after SRV died. Eric stood out abit because of his unique playing style. then he dropped off the radar. im glad to see he is back and reping the blues!

Captian!!!!! You sir are awesome for meeting with Eric Gales! By far one of my favorite guitarist...you finally got him to answer a question I've been wondering for the longest (An actual natural right hander playing guitar left handed) ...this has inspired to play more with confidence knowing my left hand is capable of playing such awesome music. Thanks Captain! Eric Gales, you are the MAN!

Eric, bless your soul. I was a smile from ear to ear through the whole video until the end, then I turned into a balling sob. And I know Eric Johnson felt the same way. Bless you. And the end of the video says "want more like this?"... guess what? There ain't no more like this. Wow.

I'm glad Eric gave God the wheel again. I too wasted many years on drugs. I finally realized that God, love, humility & giving are the important things in life. Even guitar & music had become an addiction for me. Now I'm learning to use them to serve God, not BE my god. It's a temptation for me though. God Bless!
