Matt Schofield: Epic Tones, Band Jam, 2019 Pedalboard & Supreme OD

Музыка

Incredible blues guitarist Matt Schofield visits TPS with his new Mad Professor Supreme Pedal, Two Rock amp and SVL ’61 Daytona guitar. Matt shares a ton of playing knowledge and tone tips before jamming with the TPS Band… including Dan and Mick!
Matt Schofield is superb musician whom Dan and I have known for almost two decades now. His unerring dedication to constant improvement, refinement and expression in his playing is inspirational to say the least, as is his stellar tone and dynamic touch. He’s also a beacon for purity and simplification on the gear front, all of which we discuss in this video… including some awesome jamming with Paddy Blight on bass and Dougie Mussard on drums… otherwise known as the TPS Band.
Matt has the new Supreme overdrive pedal out with Mad Professor - Harri Koski also joins us - and we must also say a massive thanks to Damian Ford from Curt Mangan strings and Reunion Blues gigbags for organising Matt’s visit.
Curt Mangan: dynamicmusicdistribution.co.u...
Reunion Blues: dynamicmusicdistribution.co.u...
Matt is using the Two-Rock Classic Reverb Signature amplifier throughout, with the Universal Audio Ox Box set to minimum attenuation into the TR 2x12 cab.
Dan and Mick play through the Victory V140 The Super Duchess.

Actually, because of That Pedal Show, I discovered that I prefer the sound of my guitar plugged straight into my amp cranked up. I bought a KOT, Cali 76, a lot of the nice pedals featured on the show and compared them to the sound of my amp cranked one day because I was inspired by their small amps videos. I only own two pedals now and rarely use either of them live.

Matt generously gave me time and conversation before a show at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley, CA (and a nice blue Matt/Curt Mangan plectrum!) after noticing my TPS tee shirt. Then performed a jaw-dropping show. Everyone, please find a way to see Matt live. It isn't just guitar; it's the vocals, the composition and the heart. Truly amazing.

I saw Matt 3 years ago at a very small club in Auburn Hills named Callahans- and he was incredible in front of the 50- 100 people that were there ! I spoke with him afterwards and he is incredibly nice and humble- and allowed me to take pictures of his pedalboard he was using. It included 2 Deep Blue delays and just a couple of others- I will need to find the pic again. In any event, it inspired me to buy a Deep Blue delay and I use to this day. By the way, he told me that with all the music he plays- there is nothing better than jamming to slow blues- and he certainly proves it , Amazing talent!

I'm with Matt, I went from a lot of pedal to only a couple. I really like the sound of my amps but something that people I don't think spend enough time on is the right speakers. People change and buy pedals like crazy and really finding the right speaker or speakers for your amp is life changing.

TPS inspired me to go without pedals, too! Watching TPS educated me on the tones that I like, inspiring me to get a Cali 76, KOT, ARDX20 for slap, and a tremolo pedal. Thanks to some inspiration from Derek Trucks, Jim Campilongo, and JD Simo and the TPS episodes on small amps, I decided to try shooting out my pedals at gig volume to plugging straight in with the amp cranked all the way, utilizing my guitar volume and the amp's onboard verb/trem. The amp won and I've been playing an Esquire straight into a cranked Carr Rambler ever since. The tone, volume, and dynamics are glorious.

It just brought my tone alive with some other pedals, and made me wanna play more...., SO Mick and Dan: them pedals and your guiding( and some hard labour on my side...) have really had a huge influence on my tone/playing/life!! It is said a lot here that this was the best show ever, and most of the times people are absolutely right. Ed O'Brian, Chris Buck, Joey Landreth, (and so many others) those are all people that are extraordinary players, but also behave in wonder of what they do and music in general. Having that out of the way, this was my favorite show, the "no-pedal show". It was much about the gear as it was about the man (men - you guys, the band, mad professor), and living a creative, artistic life, while balancing the process of earning a living. It is very grounded, and for that reason it's humbling. Two things Matt said were very interesting to me: first, "I still kinda just wanna sound like B.B"; and then "I'm just trying to please myself" (while talking about the pedal and the amp). The question 'what do I want to hear?' it points to, for me, is the one we all come across one way or another: "what do I want to be". Like, do I sound ok, is this good, am I doing good, and so on. And doing it in a hopeful manner that others will reckognize it and share it with you, and support you. Striping down to almost the bare essentials is very brave and inspiring to see and hear. Last, but by no means least, a shout out to Doug and Paddy for holding down the fort like a couple of legends. Spot on playing on their side, and elevated this episode to where it stands now, among the best of this show. Cheers!

Matt is a pure example of someone who's belt has gone black through years of work and use, and that has become so frayed by those years it is turning white again. Simplifying, going back to the beginning, , finding the truth in every note and pause. True knowledge is a circle, and a true master always dons a white belt. Best. That. Pedal. Show. Ever.

Among the Grateful Dead, it was said,"if it's worth playing, it's worth playing it loud" That's why we built The Wall Of Sound, Clear at any volume and tricked out to the max. Far ahead of its time, like the band, was. Thanks To The Pedal Show Crew, Brilliant Video ⚡️🙏🏽⚡️🎸⚡️🖖🏽⚡️

I have been a fan of Matt's music since the early days, his approach has been a major influence in my musical growth, his organ trio albums are still among my favourite blues albums. Thank you TPS for giving us a deeper insight of Matt's artistry. Keep on keeping on, all of you, dudes! :)
