The CANCELLED Treasure Planet Sequel...

Фильм және анимация

Yes, you may have heard about this unfinished project but we're finally talking about it! Being a cult classic from a time of Disney having the industry swept from beneath them, Treasure Planet has been plagued with the worst production luck when it came to making this movie. From the recurrent pitch rejections from Disney Execs, to the switch from traditional 2D animation to CGI 3D, and then the box office flop that ultimate killed the DVD sequels, this franchise never really had much of a chance. But what COULD have been? What plans were there to go next? And does Disney acknowledge the fan success and quality of the first movie after 100 years of Studio activity? Well come find out as we go through the history and showcase some artwork for The CANCELLED Treasure Planet Sequel...

Well, Disney sequels and spin-offs have had a bad track record of either retreading old ground or having lower quality animation. However, it would’ve been amazing to see more of this unique world and what an alien Blackbeard would’ve looked like.

The problem with so many Disney sequels is that Disney movies used to come from pre-established stories. Once you've gotten through the movie, that's likely it for the classic story. It's done. There's nothing left to work with. Now you're just making stuff up. So no, even if the original had succeeded, even if it wasn't straight to video, I don't think making a sequel for this movie would be a good idea. It's perfect the way it is. They should have put their efforts into saving 2D in the first place rather than making a quick buck off of a cheap DVD.

I remember as a kid I, a person who had a LOT of trouble saving money as a child, scraped together my pitiful allowance in the hopes that one day I could buy my own copy of Treasure Planet. One time, I found it at Barnes & Noble, but it was $30, and even though I had enough money, my parents wouldn't let me buy it, because we would "find it cheaper elsewhere" (in most circumstances they would be correct, but this is Disney, and Disney had some weird vendetta against Musker & Clements for this project) ...I didn't find it cheaper elsewhere until college. I looked in every DVD section of every store we went to during all that time, always holding on to enough money to buy Treasure Planet, but the only times I was able to see it were the rare times it was on TV. Probably safe to say I would've watched a sequel and/or series. Sidenote: when will Disney+ put Fillmore! on their streaming platform? Loved that show as a kid.

I mean my alltime favorite movie, The Shawshank Redemption barely made a profit and was only saved by rereleasing later. In that sense, i would have LOVED to see a sequel to Treasure Planet

I think I am the only person in the world who is glad that Treasure Planet failed financially. Treasure planet is SUCH a good film, the characters, writing, and pacing are all top tier imo. The ending was perfect, although there is always room for more adventures for Jim, that's all it really should be. The pitched sequel is... awful. Shoehorning in a love interest to make the obnoxious "enemies to lovers" rom com trope, bringing Silver back into the story (which COMPLETELY negates the ending of the OG film) to go on a wacky adventure that would have been worse animation, more than likely different voice actors and a forced plot line that would have felt so.... wrong in the world... I'm so glad that movie doesn't exist. I know my opinion of this matter is not a popular one, and I still find it so weird that everyone I ever talk to says that Treasure Planet is underrated (By the sheer amount of people that say that, it tells me it isn't underrated at all...) But I love what we have and am so glad to NOT have the cancelled sequel. Do I wish this movie hadn't bombed? Yes of course, I love 2D animation and part of the reason I changed careers was because I don't particularly care for the lifeless 3D animation. But I'm not sad that the sequel never came out.

I think it is better as a one off, cause the sequel could've ruined the first.

Not really considering the scrapped script set sometime before the timeskip ending of TP. Jim would attend Interstellar Academy as Captain Amelia promised to put a good reference of him. He meets new students, befriend and eventually dates a girl named Kate. A new villain emerges named Ironbeard (based off Blackbeard) whos goal is to hijack a ship developed by Delbert & Amelia (operated by Ben) and break pirates out of Galactic Prisons (and become THE PIRATE KI- jk). Jim devises a plan with Kate in order to thwart Ironbeard pirates by seeking out John Silver who resides in Lagoon Nebula with his Pirate Knowledge. Jim and Silver reunites does some mission impossible aboard the new ship. Silver being the Greedy pirate that he is, planned to take the ship for himself but some talk with Jim & Kate changed him so they try their damnest to beat Ironbeard which end up with the Ship being destroyed along with Ironbeard and his crew. Jim & Silver say their goodbyes one final time and Jim & Kate graduates as honorarys and it resumes back to TP climax with Jim wearing a White suit. It sounds so good on paper I wish we gotten a sequel. Theres also articles on Treasure Planet production that unveils how it was supposed to be set up for a sequel. Like the beginning of the movie the Narrator was supposed to represent Adult Jim telling his story but instead they changed it to a Book Narrator.
