The Butten Boy | A Links Diary film
Спорт
Jim McAlister's life in golf is one which has encompassed many highs, formidable lows and the experience of being at the forefront of a pioneering development to re-establish British golf at the very top of its profession.
In 1962 a millionaire management consultant called Ernest Butten had started a scheme to train selected young professional golfers in a bid to produce a British golfer who by 1967 would win the Open Championship and the American Open Championship. The idea behind this training programme was the five Ms... Muscle, Method, Mental, Measurement and Management. He believed if they were going to beat the Americans they had to develop all of these skills to be able to perform and compete with the superstars across the pond.
This is the story of one of the original Butten Boys - Jim McAlister. Now 86 years old, he reflects on his life in golf including his time with The Butten Boys.

What a delight to hear this story from the man himself, and to see how effortless his swing remains. These films are 15 minutes of peace and insight in anyone’s busy day. Well done guys.
Hard won wisdom from a man that looked into the mirror to fix what was fixable. Lovely content and very well done.

Many thanks, it was a lovely story to share, glad you enjoyed.
Brilliant stuff and well done Jim. I qualified too for the 1982 Open at Troon and finished 35th. 7 rounds for £935.00 and played with Ray Floyd in the 3rd round. I was very fortunate to have a sponsor called Crawley and Warren. Bernard Warren had a company in the City and my Father knew him well through Football. Crawley and Warren ended up sponsoring 5 players, Roger Chapman, Mike Mclean, John Hay, Andrew Murray and Paul Way. Similar to The Button Boys and we all owe a lot to CW and my Father for helping us to achieve what we all did during our golfing careers. RIP Tommy Horton and Brian Barnes, both great men.

Beautiful film . Sandy Wilson worked as a volunteer at the Lee Westwood academy. A wonderful man and golfer who instilled and influenced my son in the game we love. Fantastic film.

Fascinating reminiscences from Jim. The 1960s and 70s aren't all that long ago but sadly these memories are being lost to us on too regular a basis.
A great man and such a pleasure to play golf with and hear some wonderful stories from the past ,in fact not just play golf but just to be in his company
Well done Jim, so deserved and it all started at NEW CUMNOCK GOLF COURSE. You and the other Butten Boys were ahead of your time! Such a significant part of British golfing history. So fortunate to call you a friend and you still drive the ball so well. Wishing you every success. Ricky
10 more hours of this please.
