The Burning of the Custom House | May 1921 - Episode 36

De Valera’s return from the United States saw a disagreement over the conduct of the War of Independence. He believed that the ambushes and assassinations were mere “pinpricks” and that to bring the British to the negotiating table they would need large propaganda spectacles. Months of planning eventually led to the attack on the Custom House; seen by some as the blow that broke the British military and by others as a disaster which almost destroyed the IRA.

One of my Grand Uncles, was one of those who participated in the setting alight of the building. He was a serving member of the RAF but home on leave. When he was questioned by the auxiliaries upon leaving the building, he showed his RAF identification and walked away.

So, not that we'll ever know for sure, was this the IRA's "Tet Offensive" in that it was a tactical disaster but a strategic victory ? Thanks for such a fascinating episode either way !

My grandfather a captain in the IRA, met his wife during that operation. He was captured and was imprisoned awaiting court martial. He became sick while in prison and was treated in the mater hospital. His younger brother, my grand uncle, was executed by the British while my grandfather was detained. The truce was signed before he recovered. They married shortly afterwards and had 6 children. One of the children was my father. My grandfather always maintained that develera was a self centered, egotistical, diot who has no idea about military tactics.
