I had a Great Dane/St Bernard mix girl. She passed in 2011, at 12 years old. She was built like the Bernard but had the exact look of a Dane. Everyone thought she was just a Dane. She was the most loyal Dog I ever met. I have met mastiff’s in my life. They were big giant babies. Loving and protective. They look like big dopes, until they don’t. Then it’s pray for a fence and hope you can jump it.

My first rescue was a bullmastiff and he was magnificent !!! We were walking him along the beach and a little girl, about 5 years old, saw him and ran up to him screaming " Monster Dog" snd wrapped her arms sround his neck and gave him so much love. Her mother initially was scared to death and when she approached us, she hsd tears streaming down her face. I assured her he would not hurt her and she shook her head and told us her daughter had been nonverbal for 2 years following a tragic wreck..She was overjoyed just hearing her daughter's voice. By the time we parted ways, my husband and I were crying as well. He just had the utmost presence with children.

My cousins first bull mastiff was very aggressive and was eventually put down after it bit a chunk out of my face when I was 7. He then got another one who was docile as anything and an absolute giant slobbery sweetheart we all loved. The two dogs, whilst the same breed, were like night and day in character and behaviour. Breeding for good temperament is so important with any dog but especially huge guarding dogs.

@@robertjansen1796 I'm assuming you mean 'fault of the owner?'... well, the two dogs were raised exactly the same, in the exact same house, with the exact same people... the only difference was that dog 1 was (unfortunately) from a back yard breeder, whereas dog 2 was from a reputable breeder. Yes there are many bad owners out there who create aggressive dogs, but in this case the ownership had nothing to do with it.

We got a Bullmastiff from a rescue and she was the absolute best dog you could ever want. She had been trained professionally and was a pleasure on a leash, in the home, and she was dedicated to the male of the house. She was great with everyone else in the home but she was more of a one person dog. She had access to a little over one acre of fenced in property and she quickly made sure people knew it was her territory. They are fantastic dogs although some of them drool more than others. According to the breed history they will protect their people and property but they were bred to not really bite. The only negative to a Bullmastiff is their relatively short life span.

True they were bred to hunt, catch/knockdown, and detain...Although once in a while one will maul and that can be true of pretty much any breed. However, here in the US homeowner's insurance companies will cancel your policy for certain breeds based on bite stats . . . Bullmastiffs are not on that list. I made sure with my insurance carrier before I got my Bullmastiff.

Our female bull mastiff Amber is 9 now and is still very playful. Amber as a pup was the same light colour as the young female in this video but as an adult she is a dark golden red colour so its something to note that they do darken quite a lot as they age. She is exceptionally strong and very determined when she focuses in on something. Something they like to do is watch, they arent very reactionary dogs. They like to evaluate the situation before acting. Constant early socialising and basic training as with all dogs is a must but especially so with something as powerful as a bull mastiff

My dad had a bullmastiff some time ago. He was very friendly with people, but hated other dogs. He was also an excellent guard dog, in that he knew when to be a guard dog, and when to just be a dog. It wasn't trained into him, he just....... knew. Its a stark comparison to his current dog, a blue heeler that doesn't know how to turn guard dog mode off.

I love the Mastiff breed! My first memory of them goes back to when I was 14 or 15 years old. I was in a Dutch bordertown, in a store that looked like it was entirely carved out of wood. Everything was very old and solid looking. As I leaned over the counter and spoke to the shopkeeper I felt something vibrate against my left leg. A French Mastiff - the biggest dog I had ever seen - leaned its head peacefully against my leg and made a big satisfied sound of a sigh (not a growl or bark). I could feel it everywhere, it was so solid. And then I realized there was another one on my other side. I didn't hear them come into the store and I don't think they were there before. Gentle giants. I was so impressed by them, I asked the shopkeeper about them and learned they were French Mastiffs. I thought they were overgrown Boxers, but I knew then and now they are very different to most dogs I've encountered. Their natural state seems to be extremely calm.

Yep. I personally grew up with bullmastiffs. They are great dogs to have around kids at least based on my experience. They are members of the nanny group and they are usually very friendly around strangers unless they give off bad vibes. In fact according to my dad our first bullmastiff was not the best guard dog. One time my parents (this was before I was born) found her showing off her belly to a workman. My second bullmastiff never was around kids before she was adopted by my parents but as soon as she saw me she licked my feet and apparently I giggled (I was a baby at the time). Mom was forced to admit she could stay. And our third bullmastiff was super gentle and a real chicken. She actually tried to befriend deer and would try to get shrews to play with her plus she wasn’t the best at standing up for herself. A Jack Russell terrier intimidated her one time on a walk so when we got her a sibling (a German Shorthair Pointer) she relied on her sister to protect her.

I’ve had three Bullmastiffs. Given a reasonable amount of socialization the are affectionate and will guard with the best. They love being inside dogs and are easy to train to stay in your yard. None of my three needed a fence to stay close to the house. Mine all had a lazy tendency and didn’t like long walks like Hiking two or three miles at a time. My last male would sit inside in the kitchen by the glass door to watch down the drive. He would alert anytime a car came down. They train well and all three got basic obedience training, one was also a finished confirmation champion. Hard to go wrong with this breed as long as cleanup doesn’t bother you.

First morning at 6:00AM his bullmastiff was breathing on my face. Message was clear. Let's go for a walk. I suggested we wait awhile ( after 7:30A) He wasn't having it. 😁 Each early AM while I was there he was ready to walk.. When I ask his owner if they went out early, "Absolutely not" was his emphatic reply.." He knows you are an easy sell because you two like each other."😁 I loved being around that dog. Woof-Woof!

We have our 2nd bullmastiff female, our 1st Bo was so great that we got another when Bo passed away, but the difference between them is night and day, Bo was very laid back, and typically quiet unless something was wrong, our present one is completely different gobby and highly strung, any cat, human, dog, or bird within 25 steps of us gets whimpered at as she wants fuss from everyone!! Which is great she's friendly, but a shame when some don't want to say hi to her because of her size, yes they're stubborn training is harder than training a Labrador, but the guarding instinct needs no training, other than when its acceptable or not, exercise doesn't have to be hours long, but i believe they need some every day otherwise they'll let you know!! Both have been great with our cats, and children despite not being around them regularly, slobber isn't too bad usually its worse in heat or after exercise, both of our females have been sensitive to the demand "now" if all else fails "now" works immediately!! Being female I've held the lead, i do the feeding from puppy stage to show I'm leader, but its amazing how they know the difference in people, my hubby has had a tshirt torn off his back in play on the floor, me i get some play but mostly kisses and cuddles, I've taken ours puppies to a nursing home my work, to socialise them to different people, and they've been amazing with the immobile elderly residents, be strong for the times they pull on the lead as I've ended up at physio before with an injured shoulder from being pulled, mostly as both of mine have been nervous of large vehicles, busy road walks mine haven't liked, they're happier in fields or forests,, i love their wrinkled heads when they're interested, i love how mine helps me off the floor with my arthritis aches now, but in the next minute she's burst through patio doors to get to me to protect me!! A brilliant breed if only they could live longer than most do.

Great video! We have had two and fostered one. Bully's are absolutely as described here. Love people, can be obedient but aren't afraid to push back either; it's part of their charm...:). Ours only drooled when eating, begging for food, drinking or when they were lathered up. I do believe you have to be a little stubborn and very consistent with this breed. As I have always joked, if you let them get away with it once, they take the attitude of "That's they way we have always done it Dad!". They can also be a little sensitive and when they don't get their way they are masters of the pout! You cannot give in to that though. Our two were both sadly diagnosed with cancer in the month of their seventh birthday. Different breeders and bloodlines, same result. That seventh years seems to be a pitfall for them. If you can get them beyond that, you might have them for a couple more years. We currently have a Bassett Hound but I hope to some day go back a larger, mastiff family breed. They are exceptional companions!

I’ve turned that fear into a life lesson to enjoy what I have when I have it. Never know when this ride ends and I’d have zero regrets I chose bullmastiffs for the trip. Hands down the best breed on the 🌍 yes I’m biased lol. On my 2nd

We have had them for 30 years now. The best way to handle training and short life spans is to have a pack. We have four lazy.babies. Our oldest female trains the younger dogs very well. Enjoy the journey and the slobber;)

My dad has one, her name is Freida, and she is the most gentle, well behaved dog ive ever met! She never EVER barks, is a HUGE cuddler and loves attention, and she doesnt slobber at all unless shes getting a treat!! She loves adults, kids and other dogs, but is a but protective of her food towards other dogs.

That's true. Unfortunately the fanciers of this breed moved toward the show ring and bred the working traits out of them...sadly. Maybe someone will reintroduce some new outcrosses and recreate the working line Bullmastiff. These ones are definitely on the plus size and probably have a high % of English Mastiff blood...another working breed destroyed. Not sure how affective they would be going after armed poachers. Mind you I haven't watched the full video yet lol 😆

@@f.mazz.459 Modern bullmastiffs are sweet couch potatoes. Perfect for people who want intimidating dogs that won't harm anybody. A boerboel is not just a bullmastiff with a longer muzzle but much more aggressive. The ones I knew were quite dangerous.

Any time breeders breed for the show ring they eventually lose the dogs natural ability of what they where bred for. People will breed for looks instead of performance. I will take a dog from working stock over the show ring any day.

I have 3 bullmastiffs and they rarely drool and certainly don't need a drool rag, its a myth which mastiff owners seem to enjoy spreading. They only really drool when panting heavy after exercise or if allowed to beg for food.

I've got a bullmastiff and he is the most adorable lovely baby I have ever met. I don't walk him because he is too strong and wants to pick a fight with other dogs or animals he encounters, but my brother does and he completely obeys him. He is super gentle with kids and with my grandma. I recommend them as a loyal family and guard dog, you only need to be strict and strong when you walk them.

I'm used to handling big breed dogs, Malamute, German shephard, Rothweiler, Dobermans etc. And maybe 6 months ago I met a new neighbor and he has a bullmastiff. Large male. And the dog loves me. Don't know why cause I smell of cat. Last week I rang his doorbell. Hey I haven't seen you in a while, how are you doing? And his bullmastiff heard my voice and started showing me his favorite things. First a bone, nice bone and he walked back in. And talking with the owner. And the dog got his stuffed toy donkey he loves, to show to me. Nice donkey. And back in the house and back with a bunny stuffed toy he wanted to show me. And he leaning into my legs like trying to show affection. 60kg of dog and massive head like a football and not like he's known me for a long time. Refused to listen to his owner to come back inside the house. Nope. I got a new friend now, I going with him. No sorry my cat will not like you. They are such gentle dogs but a bit stubborn yes. ❤
