The Brownie: A Scottish House Spirit (Featuring

The concept of house spirits or guardians was a common thread throughout all European mythology and folklore. The origin of these spirits can be traced back to the Lares (laa·reez) of ancient Rome. The Lares were spirits, thought by some to be the spectral form of great hero’s or ancestors, that have returned to aid or guide their descendants. These entities were known as household gods or guardians of the hearth. The worship of these minor deities, was said to bring peace and prosperity to the home. In medieval Europe these once grand spirits now occupy a far less gracious position in the home. No longer minor gods but now small peaceful goblin like creatures, that aided in housework and served the family of the home they occupied. In Scotland, this creature was known as the Brownie.

Humans have been working with spirits and otherworld allies for all of history. The only culture that has ever doubted the existence of such subtle beings is western materialist reductionist culture, which can't even conceive of the value of something non-physical, which is a big reason we're in such an epidemic of mental health struggles. Like shunning all your neighbors so you're isolated in your community, then you struggle to carry alone all the tasks of life that were usually supported by a whole extended family.

They're quite small, and very quick. Seem related to the "health" of the land and its occupants (or at least on my little block they were). Used to see them out of the corner of my eye when my mind wasn't very focussed. Never mentioned it, but one day my son came and asked me about them lol. We lived in a very special place; people often pulled up into my driveway looking for the Buddhist temple (which my old house in no way resembled), would all (and I mean all of these random visitors) take a deep breath in and say something like "Wow, this is so peaceful. You sure this isn't the temple?" Lol. "Everywhere you stand, is sacred ground".

After hugging our grandparents we'd run for the Brownie Mailbox as my grandmother had deemed it to see if he'd left us anything. We weren't allowed to leave anything for the Brownie however as my grandmother knew the tales of them possible leaving as a result and told us as well. Thank you for these Brownie tales and for reminding me of our Brownie ❤

I was not aware that the scottish Brownies were so similar with finnish 'tonttu', and at the same time with swedish 'tomten'. But anyone who has red Wil Huygen's "Leven en werken van de kabouter" is aware how globally spread these creatures are. :) In Finland they are often living in an old tree that grows in the home grounds before a house is built, and the master of the house has to spend a night under the tree to receive permission for building the house. Then the spirit/creature will move into the house and share blessings with the peopel living there - unless angered somehow. The sauna, the barn and the big house may sometimes have their separate dwellers of this kind. I am a heavy believer.

I'm half way thru and told my daughter about this brownie creature and we were talking about a spirit we had in a house. I'd see it and it was a brownie and she said at night she'd hear dishes in the kitchen like someone cleaning. She got chills. Also when I was in Scotland my best friend, who lives there, and I must have picked one up on one of our walks. We're both Scots and I'm part pict. Once I left, 2 weeks after, he called me saying I must had brought something back in his home. He said every night he could hear pots and pans and water running like someone was cleaning. He'd go look nothing. He'd go back to bed it'd start again. He called a bit annoyed as it was interfering with his sleep after 2 weeks. He finally moved but it never stopped the whole time he was in that place.

Fascinating, as always. I'm familiar with the Swedish tomte from folktales, but the brownie is almost identical. I've noticed that my local garden centre is full of tomtes every Christmas, along with trees and decorations - which never used to happen. Most people call them gnomes. My theory is that Ikea, being Swedish, introduced them fairly recently - and they have spread outwards from there, wearing their pointy hats. I might be wrong.

  • @LiathWolf

yeah thats possible, Gnomes seem to be a fairly recent phenomenon, or atleast what we commonly think of as gnomes. the garden statues/ornaments definitely look more similair to the nisse or tomte. There are roman tales that mention gnomes, but in these stories the gnomes appear and act like tolkien-esque dwarves.

The Nisse (Norwegian, called Tomte in Swedish and Tonttu in Finnish) has been around for a long time, back to the Vikings at least and likely before then. They are usually classified as a type of husvættir (house spirit) from Norse mythology and were commonly called fjøsnisse (barn-nisse) in Norwegian as it was believed that they lived in barns and helped on farms. They have become associated with Christmas in modern times, "Santa" in Norwegian is "Julenisse" (Christmas-nisse) after the Christianisation of the Nordic region. They're definitely not created by Ikea although they do profit a lot from them!

I've known about brownies since I was a kid, and over the last few years I've been learning about Finnish folklore. I never really noticed how similar the stories about brownies and tontut are. It's so interesting! (There's also a well-known Christmas song in Finland called "Tonttu", which is obviously about the little elf. Raskasta Joulua has recorded a version in Finnish as well as one in English; the English version was written by Marko Hietala, and both of them are sung by JP Leppäluoto.)

Now I understand how the idea of little girls becoming brownies started. I was a brownie when I was a little girl. This speaks of the half Christian and half pagan superstitions of the people coming out of the dark ages. Thank you for this very interesting video.

I wonder if children were taught these stories so they would work hard for no rewards. What a scam that is. -- I wrote that before I heard the part about the servants. That makes more sense. These stories are a lot of fun and the pictures you chose are perfect. I love learning more about my heritage - Scots-Irish on both sides. Hughbo reminds me of Sigmund and the Sea Monsters. "An American children's television series that ran from September 8, 1973 to October 18, 1975, produced by Sid and Marty Krofft and aired on Saturday mornings." I loved that show.

One of the reasons they might not want thanks is cause they are good natured spirits. To truly do or be good one must do it without reward or thanks but because it is the right thing to do, those that do good cause they want thanks, a pat on the back or reward for their actions are not doing good for the sake of good but for reward or inflation of their ego they are self serving like someone trying to buy their way into heaven with good deeds. Charity to is suppose to be totally anonymous for this reason as it is to be given freely without reward not a tax write off, not to demonstrate to your community your good deeds not even a thank you, to truly do good it must be done without coercion, doing good is its own reward.

Claude Licateaux in his book Tradition of Household Spirits says from his research that Brownies are ancestral spirits who have died before their time or even murdered and come to the family in need and leaves when either slighted or their need was up. Wearing clothes of brown and having a wound that caused their death, such as a knife sticking from ones back. They could change their size as needed. Spirits have a taboo of being given food, coothes or drink of the living as they can't eat it or use it and the living should remember so, and when offered it is a sign that their need was no longer required. In spirit traditions they understand this still and abide. If they ever find a brownie, sprit, sprigen, spree, pwka, kobalt or other type of household spirit, just be glad they are there without ever saying so and leave them to their work.
