Glaistig: Scotland's Haunting Green Lady (Scottish Folklore)

Consider supporting me on Patreon: / liathwolf
The Glaistig or maighdean uaine The Green maiden, is a solitary supernatural spirit, sometimes described as a ghost from the Scottish highlands. The traditional description of the Glaistig has her appear with the upper half of a woman and the lower half of a goat with cloven hooves, although in many later tales she appears as fully human albeit with a hint of the fae or sith. The spirt was known to have pale near grey skin and long golden hair, often she would be clad in green, in the form of a long flowing robe or dress. This links the Glaistig quite firmly to the Daoine sith or fairy folk, as the green colour has always been seen in Scotland as a sign of the old gods or fair folk and was though to have magical properties. The Glaistig was said to be the strongest of Sith and could summon to herself great power for feats of strength. She was also said to have a scream that could awaken the echo of the most distant hills and was matched only by the Irish Banshee. And much like her Irish cousine the Glaistig is more commonly heard than seen.

I was half-expecting her to invite McKelvie back to her homeland. Then, after a blissful year or two, he would briefly re-visit his old home - only to find that several centuries had passed. All over the world, these girls in green are notorious for messing about with time.

Sounds a bit like the musical, movie from the 1940's/1950's, Brigadoon. Only in this tale, the village of Brigadoon would only be part of the ''really world one day of every century-to protect it's people from witches. I've been in love with Scottish tales most of my life. Wish I could have visited even once before it became unwise (mobility and health issues). Anyway, I haven't seen the movie in ages, but it was always a favourite of mine. Think I'll see if I can find it. ❤

I'm half Scottish half Irish, from Boston my grandmother would tell me stories in her native tongue, it was hard to understand, but it was hypnotic at the same time, I never really believed in ghosts but with cameras everywhere today capturing things that can't be explained away, ghosts are absolutely real.

Thank you! I love hearing folklore! Thank you for adding more context in the description! I actually study folklore and I've noticed that her having goat legs is the oldest version and a beautiful woman with long hair only having goat legs also exists in the Middle East and the Philippines and I'm pretty sure in Asia as well. I just think it's so interesting how all across the world the same creatures show up in stories

It could be a blessing of sorts. Perhaps the lady desired immortality/eternal youth and they granted it to her in a way. Even me, if I could be granted a wish I would wish for eternal/infinite knowledge & wisdom. Others may wish for infinite wealth or eternal youth or immortality.

This may sound crazy, but I'm 99.9% sure I had an experience w/ a Glastig. During my late teens to early 20s I lived in a town in MA or the northeast that was known for a sizable Irish population. I'm not even Irish or Scottish, or of the European persuasion, but I do have a scott-irish last name. And some Irish DNA. 🤷‍♀️ Anyway, one night I had been walking home from work. Took the usual parkway and then hit a side street that was about a mile. It was windy and connected in forks w/ other streets in certain sections. It was quiet, peaceful and nothing odd was noticed. there's this particular house I always remembered, because it had a unique/peculiar lion knocker on the door. In front was a screen door. Now, as I approach it...I start to see this greenish hue or light flash in and out of existence. It was odd. It totally came from the front of the house, but from my angle....I thought it was a strobe light or holographic. There hadn't been any heavy wind, but as I got closer to the front of the house...the wind picked up immensely. The light kept blanking on and off...like something was trying to manifest. I stood there frozen and before my eyes....in this doorway; there was a massive fucking woman. She seemed to be standing impossibly between the screen and solid front door, yet not. Cause it seemed like... wherever she was...it wasn't a part of the house. Not part of this world. There was intense noise. Like wind blowing from an entirely different landscape and light pouring forth from around her. That was pale, cold yet golden intertwined w/ an eerie green. I could only see half of her in the "doorway". The lady seemed simultaneously both old and young. She kept phasing. The spirit wore this really phantasmal green dress that shown beautifully. It was being carried by the phantom wind. Billowing. The skin was pale, luminous and the figure almost looked entranced. The eyes were a milky bluish color. Almost like she was blind or dead. The hair was a soft but pale blonde and had been pinned back, but was also messy and floating all over the place. She reminded me of that elven queen from Lord of the rings; when she became frightening and majestic. Being presented w/ the ring. The figure was beautiful and frightening. Otherworldly and jarring. I screamed upon seeing the full visage and held my chest. Then just stood transfixed and stupid. The feelings I felt were similar to awe, dread, wonder, fear and being in the presence of something ancient. It almost felt like an omen. Yes, I grew up being sensitive to the paranormal and seeing bizarre shit, but this freaked me out!! The lady never once gazed at me. Never blinked. Just a wide eyed appearance w/ a blank yet tepid smile. She seemed to be seeing something beyond my comprehension behind me. Because the house was at the junction point of the 3 way crossroad. I remember never turning my back towards the figure.....instead, it felt safer to walk backwards. I literally scared shitless...walked backwards until the figure was out of my periphery. Then I turned and ran my ass home. The lady never seemed to stand but float from whatever dimensional window she came from. I wondered if she was protecting me on my walk home? Or if that was a warning for something else. I'm an avid believer in the fae and used to leave them offerings in the woods during my teens. That shook me something wicked. I remember my hands shaking for a week afterwards.

Red or brown hair seems to be far more common in the older tales of the Glastig, when the being was more of a nature spirit and shepherd of wild creatures, the golden hair tends (not always) to appear in later tales, and is more associated with the haunting, ghostly glastig. hope that helps. Its a gift to inspire tales even if some are a little odd. 🤣
