Bessie Dunlop: The Wise Woman of Lynn (The Occult)

Consider supporting me on Patreon: / liathwolf
It is sad to see that in the modern time, most people think of witches and witchcraft as entirely evil. But looking back in history this is just not the case, of course there are those who have claimed to be in league with the devil and on his orders did carry out horrific atrocities, yet for each demon summing sorceress there are an equal amount of wise women and healers who have only used their power to help others. Unfortunately, during the witch hunts conducted in Scotland, the leaders of the church and on many occasions the king himself, would treat all whom used unearthly power in the same grizzly fashion. The wise woman of Lynn, Bessie Dunlop.

Fear and ignorance played a big part in days gone by of cruelty to wise women , burnt at the stake alive must have been the worst death anyone could inflict on another person regardless to what they thought they were guilty of . It just goes to prove in those far off times a person couldnt just be a helper or healer and live to old age and die in their bed's without interference from ppl getting them into trouble. 😡

I remember sitting through, what seemed to be endless Sunday church services as small child. Even then I remember thinking, "It's a beautiful blue sky day. God isn't sitting in this boring old church! He is out with the birds in the trees!" That said, I am sure I too would have been burned at the stake back then. I don't think there is a truer evil than that of men in power claiming to do God's work to further their own power. I like to think there is a special hell for those who engaged in those practices, where they get to be put through everything they did to those innocent people for all eternity.

Just because something is not understood by oneself doesn't make it less true. Things beyond our comprehension doesn't make it less existent.. only 2% of knowledge is known to mankind, so in reality we as human know nothing and something, there is a line between nothing and something.

Since people genuinely believed in the Devil and his works, and witchcraft and old traditions, naturally there were those that honestly tried to curse people and do ill to them with the help of spells and witchcraft. I think it's naive to think that all those that had this type of interest only had good in their heart.

And what about people in the church at the time who claimed to be decent god fearing upstanding members of the community, yet outside the church had numerous marital affairs, or cheated people in business. Is there sin less egregious simply because they weren't invoking infernal powers to do it but of there own free will?

That is so sad. What gets me is that the belief is that the devil does bad and God does good. So how could she have been bad when all her actions were good? How could she have been a witch working with the devil if she was helping and healing people? By their logic, would it mean that Jesus was also practicing witchcraft with all the healing he did? These people make no damn sense.

One of my ancestral clans (Mackenzie) did witch hunting to curry favor of King James, as well as an ancestor who was burned alive for being a witch in Northumberland. Today, my immediate family is still practicing the old ways albeit with some Christian influences. They didn't stop anything, just made us stronger!

The idea of a devil is purely Christian. It has nothing to do with the blessings of the witch. Look to the birds for true blessing. Feed them and give them water when it will not freeze. They will bless you better than you can imagine. Rose
