You can’t talk about The Breeders without talking about The Pixies first. The Pixies officially formed in 1986 and Kim Deal, a newlywed at the time was working in a medical lab. She knew how to play guitar, but not bass. She would answer a “wanted ad” in the Boston Phoenix newsletter that read -
Looking for a “bassist'' into Hüsker Dü and Peter, Paul and Mary. Please - no chops.” Kim answered, even though she didn’ know how to play a bass guitar yet.
She would join The Pixies in 1986 under the stage name “Mrs. John Murphy. Her twin sister Kelley was also asked to join , but she passed and went onto to Calfironia instead.
Kim Deal and Charles Thompson IV, the frontman of the Pixies who also went by the name Black Francis, were both musical forces to be reckoned, but that often led to them arguing and butting heads over creative control. Deal wanted more opportunities to write songs.
Three years later, after hitting walls with her ability to express herself within the confines of The Pixies, Kim started her own side project, the band we all know as The Breeders. Today lets talk about the history of the breeders and whatever happened to the band
Kim had been making music with her identical twin sister Kelley, since they were kids growing up in Dayton, Ohio. The twin sisters grew up on 70’s AM radio and played together as a country duo at truckstops and bluegrass bars under the monicker the breeders. Their parents were from West Virginia, and they instilled in them a pragmatic outlook on life. Kim’s twin sister Kelley wouldn’t officially join the Breeders until 1992 because around the time of the band’s formation, the only position available was drummer and she wasn’t interested.
The original 1989 lineup of The Breeders consisted of Tanya Donnelly from Throwing Muses, Josephine Wiggs from The Perfect Disaster and Jim MacPhearson who was a personal friend of Kim’s.The name the “breeders” is a term that gay people use to desribe straight people.
Even though Kim was the bassist for The Pixies, she didn’t want to play the same role in The Breeders, handing off bass duties to Josephine Wiggs. In a 2017 interview with The Guardian newspaper, she said it’s because she and i quote is “a guitar player at heart.”
The band already had an in with a label thanks to Kim’s Pixies connections,They would sign with the same label with 4AD - and went on to release their debut album “Pod” in 1990. The album featured a cover of the beatles song happiness is a warm gun, which became a minor hit on college radio. The timing was serendipitous as grunge was just on the verge of surging in popularity, and Kim even landed a personal praise from Kurt Cobain, when the Nirvana frontman listed Pod in his journal as one of the 50 albums that had the biggest influence on Nirvana’s sound. He also admired Kim’s abilities as a songwriter, saying that “Gigantic” was his favorite Pixies song.
Deal has always committed to the “All Wave” recording philosophy, which producer Steve Albini who worked with the Breeders explained in a 2008 meant that they would use: no computers, no digital recording, no auto-tuning, or any other mainstays of contemporary production. In fact, in a 2018 interview with “The Gentlewoman” online, Deal revealed that she writes all her lyrics on paper plates, which perfectly sums up her approach to creating music.
The band was still on the verge of commercial success when they recorded their “Safari” EP in 1992. But a line up change was also brewing. Tanya Donnelly left The Breeders to focus on her own band “Belly.”
In 1992, the band toured with Nirvana in Europe, which was also one of drummer Jim MacPherson’s first times playing outside of Dayton. It’s rumored that he even had to ask Dave Grohl what a monitor was.
One year later, following a disastrous tour with U2, The Pixies called it quits. Black Francis notified his fellow band members by fax, no less that the Pixies where done. Some claimed in add

She can drink most dudes under the table & She can handle her dope a lot better than most junkies. Like her twin Sister! To my knowledge Kim never hit bottom with dope. It was the, "Drink." Believe me, I am not being critical. ( Al Jourgensen of, "Ministry" went to Rehab 33 times! He blew A LOT of F-ing Money on his appetite for Drugs: mainly Heroin, (Deso-Morphine), Methadone, Cocaine & Crack-Cocaine, & last, but not least; old-fashioned Ethyl Alcohol. The worst 😫 Drug ever made, except for, "Krocadil" & other obscure crazy Drugs. Alcohol is a systemic poison that damages everything in the human body, except for: finger, toe nails, body hair & head hair. The hair being immune to the damage caused by Ethyl Alcohol is in debate. I lost most of gMany female alcoholics are adamant in their opinion that states: Ethyl Alcohol is bad for hair, it causes hair to be dry & difficult to handle & it causes split ends. All of these are supposed claims. Alcohol is socially accepted, yet it causes more violent crimes & property damage than all illicit drugs combined. I spent eleven months at Guantanemo Naval Base where Alcohol is tax free. This was in '99-2000 & a six pack of Budweiser long neck bottles was $2.68. A fifth of Jack Daniel's was about $7 even. My point is, the U.S. Government makes a tremendous amount of money off of Alcohol via taxes & The Prison Industrial Complex. However, it is a ridiculous double standard. I know. I got off track. - B

Jim wasn't a part of the band until 1992 btw This is a more accurate account of their lineup history from the early years: Original Lineup: Kim + Kelley 1988: Kim + Tanya Donelly Pod Demos: Guitar & Vocals: Kim + Tanya Drums: David Narcizo, Mickey Bones, and Carl Haarer Bass: Ray Halliday 1989: Josephine joins the band as the bassist. Britt Walford becomes the drummer (suggested by Steve Albini) 1992: Kelley joins Tanya leaves Britt leaves Jon Mattock? (Apparently breifly became their drummer in 1992) Jim MacPherson joins as new drummer Carrie Bradley was the violinist for the Pod Demos through to Last Splash and then rejoined for the 1996-1997 shows.

Yeah, I thought they were going to mention The Kelley Deal 6000 when they mentioned Kelley going to Minnesota for rehab. Boom! Boom! Boom! is an underrated masterpiece in my mind. I was at a Breeders show in Minneapolis in the mid-2000s where there were several people in the crowd yelling at them to play "Canyon" from Go to the Sugar Altar, and when the Breeders came back a few years later they indeed did have that on their playlist. The video also neglected to mention The Last Hard Men, however, I wasn't really expecting that to be mentioned.

Pixies during their initial run was a magical moment in time, certainly, and their importance can _never_ be understated. But the Breeders - in _every_ configuration - are just a far more interesting and rewarding musical proposition, in my opinion. Both bands are excellent, of course, and it's not really a fair comparison - they're two very different groups. But given the choice, I'll always pick the Breeders.

I saw them AGAIN two years ago, opening for Weezer on the more recent, shitty album. No fan engagement at all. They just drove through the set then left the stage. No arrests though, amazingly, but plenty of other horrid shit I’d just as soon forget. If you can handle it, more power to you. I couldn’t handle it, finally stopped, been playing catch-up ever since. As a musician an artist I’m still haunted by it in my dreams. I don’t know if I’m more susceptible as a musician, but some people believe that, though it hits people in ALL walks-of-life. I’m 46 now so I just can’t abuse myself living the rock n roll-life (in its most cliche’d meaning) anymore. Never thought I’d get here but I’d rather be here than dead-before-my-time or in jail. About 10 years ago a band I was in was in NYC to play at CMJ. When we got back to the place we were staying at we decided to haul our gear inside. I was carrying my bandmate's big-ass bass fiddle when I felt someone tap me on the shoulder and I heard someone say, "need some help?" I turned around and lo and behold, it was Kelly Deal! 😂

Saw the Pixies in ‘87 at a club on Long Island just before they broke big. Only like 10 people in attendance but they played their hearts out. Fast forward about 20 years to what I guess amounted to a reunion show in a stadium. The tension onstage was palpable. Obvs Black Francis wanted them to adopt a silent, distant demeanor, no intro or chatter between songs, just launched right into it. After a few songs, Kim broke the silence and said, “How’s everyone doing?” Crowd cheered as BF shot death glares at her. I don’t know if it was the infighting, their age, or a venue not suited to them, but they seemed to be phoning it in and it felt like we were seeing a really competent Pixies cover band. But, shit man, the greatest bands seem to result from X factor alchemy, and it’s hard to touch those first couple of Pixies records for raw verve and genius. Lightning in a bottle.

I LOVE Kim, she's an icon, I've been fortunate enough to meet her on several occasions and sees always been nice (my ex fiancee was childhood friends with Nate who played guitar in the Amps and GBV). Frank Black is/has always been a difficult personality from everyone around him, nice guy, but difficult personality... I could always see why him and Kim bumped heads. I miss Kim in the Pixies (great to see Paz up there though, totally love her). You should do a video on that awesome Dayton Ohio rock scene, with bands like Guided by Voices, The Amps, etc...... Or on Atlanta's scene, lots of awesome late 90's/early 2000's acts came from there too. Oh, and it came up in a conversation amongst friends of mine, whatever happened to that Howie Day guy? He was like indie/pop rock, but was huge in the College scene early 2K's

Definitely prefer The Pixies to The Breeders. Pixies have many songs that especially transcend the music itself. But I appreciate the Breeders, a lot.

I have a request. I was wondering if you'd be interested in making a video on Static X. Maybe the life and death of Wayne Static.

I saw them when they toured for All Nerve, and they were great. Personally, I think it's nearly as good as any of the older records. I also saw The Amps open for the Foo Fighters in the '90's, and they were awful. It seemed clear at the time that Kim wasn't the same. I think she and the rest of the band have really come into their own with the last album.

I’ll tell you what happened to The Breeders. Saw them last night and they fucking rocked.

I second and third TKK. I've met and partied with Frank more than a few times he really is a nice guy, Buzz is more stand offish but pleasant.

"I'm the Electric Messiah." I always craved a return of the Thomas Thorn days in TKK. Those albums were so dark.

@@casucasueq4479 though I know its their least favorite album I have a deep and very real love of Hit and Run Holiday. But Who killed the cock Robin? I killed the cock Robin. I shot the sparrow with my bow and arrow, I drink it's blood. Has got to be in the top five lines of their catalog of music.
