Takes me back to September 1978 when the clubs met in the league for the first time since 1924. A group of us had driven up to Aldershot a week or two before, and had a great time among the 6000 away supporters jammed into their tiny three-sided ground. Unfortunately the Bournemouth game was a Friday evening fixture and due to work commitments we didn't set off until around 6 pm. We hadn't reached Kingston roundabout before news came on the radio of a 13 mile traffic jam caused by Pompey fans travelling in such numbers that most would miss the kick-off and many wouldn't get in the ground at all. We decided to save the petrol money and spend it on HSB instead - it was still the best beer on the south coast back then.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Rich. It's those type of tales that are so good to hear. They were great times when you could just turn up at a ground and pay your couple of quid to get in. Those things just don't happen anymore these days, trips have to be planned weeks and months in advance!

Thanks guys. Shame you didn't include footage of the pitch invasion from 83. Funny to see Redknapp started complaining about bare bones football so early in his managerial career. I think at one time at Pompey we had 6,846 first teamers on the books and that still wasn't enough.
