The Bounty Hunters Catching Pythons In Florida (HBO)

The Everglades in Florida are plagued with dozens of invasive species, top among them is the Burmese Python. A pet sold in stores throughout the US, when it gets too big or too old for its owner it typically gets released into the wild. When this happens in Florida, where the Everglades tall grasses are identical to Southeast Asia, the animal thrives, breeding in huge numbers and eating whatever it wants thanks to a complete absence of natural predators. On the heels of a viral video showing a burmese python wrestling and killing an alligator, the director of the South Florida Water Management District launched a program to hunt snakes throughout his district.

Pythons are notoriously hard to locate in the immense stretches of south Florida wetlands where they thrive. They don’t readily enter traps, and their natural camouflage is incredibly well suited to florida. These 4 hunters in 10 years caught only about 500 pythons. There are hundreds of hunters catching them in Florida but there are 30,000 pythons. That seems very difficult.

Possibly, although keep in mind that snakes are not warm-blooded. But there's another tech advance that's being tried with great success: male pythons are now being implanted with microchips that emit tracking signals. When these males are released and tracked, they're often found with females. Recently a couple of these decoys were discovered along with 2 large "mating balls" totalling 11 females. (Reported 2/21/2024 - Miami Herald.)

If we are going to support nature, I just hope we remember this is an animal at the end of the day, just like a shark, just like a dog, just like a giraffe. In English perhaps, these two words have taken the significance they have. However, if you want to be precise, autopsy actually means "seeing/observing by your own means" ( from the Ancient Greek αὐτοψία : αὐτός autos + ὄψις opsis), whereas necropsy means "seeing/observing a dead body" (νεκρός nekros + ὄψις opsis). And in Greece, we use the word νεκροψία nekropsia, whatever the dead body is.

considering a female python can lay 20-100 eggs per year.... considering theres already a few thousand of them out there... removing a few hundreds of python a year wont make a dent....sadly to say. Edit: I'm not trying to be negative, just realistic. Look, if there's already a few thousand of snakes already ...let's say like out of 2000 snakes, only half of that or even 25% are adults, and let's say literally the minimum(2) amount of those 20-100 eggs make it to adulthood and reproduce....we're still talking about an additional 1,000-2,000 of snakes every year....

Florida just straight up banned the ownership of pythons. Venomous snakes require multiple permits, hundreds of hours in apprenticeships, yearly inspections, and strict laws, and yet it's pretty common to hear on the news that some escape. It's time to just make them outright illegal.

You can't spay or neuter a snake.

@@shchorss Nah. I own a python and will never support them being made illegal.
