Apologies for having to use the watermark again, some random distribution company in Asia kept nailing my well-within-fair-use clips and it was the only way. Hopefully you can still enjoy the video 🍀

Not a problem for me. I often suggest that everyone use a unique watermark for the reactions, so that no one can steal your reaction (a channel pops up every now and then that tries to steal other people's reaction videos) and personalize their reaction. So don't sweat it! Go with God and Be Safe from Evil. 😎 👍

There's a story in the commentary that after shooting Rocco who was from the area would go to a local bar where he had a thing for one of the waitresses there. He was trying to impress her by telling her that he was acting in a movie with Willem Dafoe, because she was a fan of the actor. She of course didn't believe him. Then near the end of shooting the entire cast went to the bar with Rocco. They were drinking and having a good time, and Willem knew that Rocco had a thing for that waitress. The woman finally got up enough courage to ask Willem for an autograph. He turned to her and said, "Only if the Roc says it's okay." Rocco gave his okay and I think he got a date from the waitress because of it, but I don't think anything came from it.

I haven't watched yet, and I don't think this would be good for a reaction, but there's a documentary about the guy that made this film called "Overnight", that you have to see! It's a long story, but the dude, his brother and friends, came to LA from Boston because they were trying to make it with their band, and he was a bouncer at an Irish pub in West Hollywood, that doesn't exist anymore. He had no experience in screenwriting or filmmaking, but wrote this script, showed it to a guy he knew from the bar, who showed it to someone else, and all of a sudden had all this overnight hype about him and this script. He was being lauded as the next great thing, and he was presented with an opportunity that probably only comes along once in three lifetimes. Harvey Weinstein was going to buy the script, let him direct it himself, let their band do all the music, and buy the Irish pub and co-own it with him! But long story short, this guy was such a conceited asshole that he eventually just pissed everyone off. Eventually Harvey Weinstein had enough, and told him to go fuck himself. They did manage to find someone else to make it on half the budget, and it is a great flick, but by the time it was all said and done, even his own brother didn't want anything to do with him anymore! It became such a cult hit, that someone did eventually put up the money for a sequel since they knew the first was popular enough that they'd still make money, but it wasn't as good, but basically that was it for him. It sounds kind of cruel out of context, but the documentary is fun to watch because this guy is literally such an asshole that it's just so much fun to hate him for it.

Another fun reaction. I think there are times when these methods would be useful like when the law fails or when corruption protects terrible people. But reality tells me the people taking on this role would end up also abusing their power, and then you'd end up needing someone to take care of them.... so where does it stop. I guess the law is the best system we've got, we just need that system to be more accountable for mistakes.

I don't think Smecker has self-hatred. He's just a gay man who doesn't like the gay stereotype. You have to remember this movie came out when the multiple gay stereotypes were "phased out" by the media (under pressure of the LGBTQ community) and were replaced by the single effeminate musical fashion "queer". Something that's not well known is that a rather large part of the gay community isn't a fan of the LGBTQ community because they keep pushing this stereotype and feel that anyone that doesn't fit that stereotype is being neglected by them. Honestly, I can't blame them, because from a pure objective standpoint, it seems being gay is more of a lifestyle than actually being attracted to someone of the same gender.

Was also thinkin something along those lines. I mean everyone gets thrown in to a narrow set of boxes on first eye contact, that's pretty much human nature, but damn the boxes he has to put up with must be infuriating, especially since he comes across as hating that boxes, lazy labels and the lazy minded people that pretty much live their lives with those boxes, labels and are perfectly happy with them and don't seem to feel boxed in.

That’s a really good point I hadn’t thought of. That time was very chaotic for gay people, getting kind of shoved into a mainstream-friendly image in order to be accepted. So him rebelling against that is also very fitting.

Boondock Saints is a cult classic. Another film that deals with the idea of vigilantism is Death Wish (1973) with Charles Bronson, and very smartly addresses the problem in the film itself. And that was in the 1970s, when crime in cities like New York was rampant, and the police weren't doing their job right (basically, because of allegations of police brutality, cops weren't all that keen to risk their lives only to get charged with using excessive force). The other Death Wish films are a bit of a slaughterfest, but they were cathartic. Then there's a B-movie with Michael Rooker, called Renegade Force (1998), and a similar theme was in Magnum Force (1973).

1999 was just one of those years with bangers growing up. For my generation, it might have even been a peak for entertainment. I always loved the ethical debate in this. I tend to side with the brothers, but know it can get out of hand really quickly and those doing it can get God complexes, so it's probably not best to do it at all. The concept is why I really got into the Anime 'Death Note', because it raises the same moral debate. Where does the line get drawn?

  • @RhetoricalThrill

Yes, it did a great job showing both sides without demonizing the brothers. I’d sure feel safer with them around…but just them 😅

Yeah, sometimes there’s nothing you can do because they keep claiming it. When they’re claiming and blocking the entire thing because of 3 second clips it’s either watermark or scrap it entirely. Not to mention, these videos aren’t intended to be used as a free way to see a copyrighted film, so go rent it yourself if it’s such a huge fucking deal. Have a splendid day.
