Deserves mentioning that the brave oarsman in the Oxford boat kept rowing as hard as the rest, to keep the boat balanced, even 'though his oar was broken. Great sportsmanship, great character. He deserves a special recognition, despite the bad taste this race may have left in some people's mouths.

The umpire was still terrible. The restart on the bend gave Cambridge a huge advantage, and the wash from the PLA boats and lifeboats picking up the swimmer made the job of both coxes much harder. Overall it was a joke of a race. One has to feel for the athletes whose time and effort has been wasted.

The oar broke because Oxford ignored the umpire's repeated warnings.

After the restart, the umpire warned Oxford twice at 12', then again at 23', then repeatedly from 36' until the clash at 46'. 10 seconds, which is 5 or 6 strokes, should be enough for a cox to stir away, if he's willing to do so. In the Boat Race, 45' of race is more or less 300 m, so well over the first 100m after the restart. For me, the umpire took the good decision.

Both crews had taken about 32-34 strokes between the restart and the clash. This would easily be enough strokes to have taken them well over 100 metres, given how much cover they're getting and the speed of the tide. Good umpire

Was it really within a hundred metres though? I'm not a rower so I don't know the timings on this stuff, but it seemed like they'd gone further than that

Best Boat Race for many a year BECAUSE of all the incidents. Zoe looked fit as well.

Cambridge didn't know the Oar broke when they crossed the line, they thought they'd won just because they were the better crew, when rowing they just focus in their boat and don't look up. The celebrations were like they'd have normally been. It was the Oxford cox's fault they broke their oar, she was warned..

This rule applies to races rowed under the FISA Rules of Racing and the British Rowing Rules of Racing: Rule 71-Damage in the Start Zone "If a crew in the start zone sustains damage to its equipment then the cox shall raise his arm to indicate that there is a problem. The starter or the Umpire shall stop the race and shall then decide on the steps to be taken with the President of the Jury. A crew is in the start zone if the bow of its boat has not yet crossed the 100 metres line." Bad umpire.

Oxford would have been quite happy had they broken a Cambridge oar and gone on to win, and doubtless would have all celebrated their "win" along with their fans. They took a chance and lost out. Tough, That's life, stop bleating and next time, PLAY FAIR! She would have done better to have steered as the umpire saw fit, after all, that was her job.
