The BMW Alpina XB7 is, to put it bluntly, shockingly good. It's very fast, with the same amount of power as the Ferrari Roma. It's very luxurious, with incredibly adaptive interior options. And it's even fun to drive when pushed, to a point. And building an X7M would have probably made it too stiff and ruined it.

0:40 it is important to point out that Alpina is not a division of BMW, it is a completely seperate entity, it is not as mentioned in-house. It is a private company (Alpina Burkard Bovensiepen GmbH + Co. KG) that has very comprehensive production contracts with BMW M GmbH, not actual BMW Group itself. BMW management has zero input on Alpina product planning, all Alpina-specific engineering is done by Alpina itself in Buchloe, Bavaria. Some engines are hand-built there, somewhat like AMG does it in Affalterbach, BW. With the difference being that AMG is actually owned by Daimler, Alpina is not owned by BMW. And although produced by BMW under contract, Alpina has a seperate VIN, starting WAP. It is definately a unique relationship.

Alpina allows customers to opt for normal paddle shifters instead of the buttons. The latter is just an ode to when Alpina "invented" controlling an automatic transmission on the steering wheel before paddles were a thing. So I've heard.

The X7 doesn't share a platform with the Cullinan. The architecture of luxury is bespoke to Rolls-Royce. We'll blame the new year's celebrations. Also even though BMW dealers sell the Alpina, it is still owned by the family that founded it.
Congrats on the million
Alpina is NOT in-house BMW, it is actually a vehicle manufacturer. The car gets a new certificate of conformity (EU paperwork) and VIN number. They do however also get support within the official BMW dealer network with some of the factory warranty remaining. The cars for Alpina are actually removed from the production line before completion, they do not modify the vehicles after delivery. Just FYI!

hahaha that "Vitalize" program reminds me of a road trip from Cleveland, Ohio to upstate Michigan I had to do for an old job. It was 7 hours one way, I was tired on the way back so I got a coffee, blasted a metal XM station, cranked up the AC, and opened the sunroof, worked like a charm.
Alpina isnt an inhouse tuner tho, its an independent private company that just sells its cars through BMW dealers. In the same way the DeTomaso Pantera was sold via Lincoln-Mercury Dealerships.
Congrats on 1 Million!!
As someone who watches most of your podcasts and car reviews, I enjoy it when you mention the date that the reviews/podcasts were filmed. Many times I listen to a podcast where you talk about a vehicle that sounds kinda neat and I get excited about watching your review but have no real idea of when to expect the video. But hearing a date on podcasts/reviews gives me a rough timeline (3ish weeks) and kinda keeps my brain calibrated to your car news. Ps bought a mk7 GTI after hearing you recommend it as an entry level vehicle many times over, and love it.

Aswell as the understated looks (not on this one so much) but on the b3 or b5 you are defenitely buying it for the driving dynamics, not for flexing.

Holy, did Matt not get what Alpina is about. I guess in the simplest terms you could say historically, currently and even geographically (as they are more or less next-door neighbours) Alpina is to BMW what RUF is to Porsche. Just as RUF is enhancing the DNA of street 911s to a level not feasible for mass-production so is Alpina with street BMWs. Neither does RUF build track-focused GTx competitiors nor does Alpina build sport-focused M competitiors. Both are actually certified vehicle manufacturers with their own VIN.
The grille doesn't look bad on their SUVs thanks to the larger proportions. Actually, I would even say it looks good.
