The tragedy of the scene is (imo) that she is not over Emma. Blue represents the love between those two and she takes it with her. Here only Adele is blue and way bluer than in the whole film. Her love is stronger than ever but there is no way back. Makes me cry

@@blankkkkk3668 honestly thats because she thought emme was also cheating on her, obviously not thinking clear she thought she definitely knew it at 100% true so she didn't cheat because she didn't love Emma she did it because she wanted to get back at emme for hurting her like that, (in her mind) only to find out that Emma indeed wasn't cheating

I love this ending. I look at it as more of a happy ending. Adele is walking away alone to start her new life as her own person instead of one based on someone else, yet she is still wearing the color that symbolized her relationship with Emma. She is not over the relationship, but is keeping a part of it with her (blue dress) for memories and how to grow for herself.

It’s what was best for both of them. Because some things in life don’t have happy endings. Both of them just weren’t good for eachother.

This is the films most beautiful scene. So much symbolism. - The half open baggage (purse) - Waking towards the sunset as this chapter of her life ends - Stronger shade of blue as it will be forever part of her - A hesitant walk that turns into a stride as she comes of age

I will never forget this movie, it will always be one of my favorites.

The whole movie Adele was sheepish, impressionable and desperate for love from Emma. Emma loved her back but moving on and throwing it all away was much easier for her. This ending is great because there is a resolve and easiness in her walk as if to show she's finally choosing herself over Emma, the one moment in the film where she portrays a sort of confidence and power in herself - all in how she simply walks away. She finally lets go and moves on.

Depression.....😐😐😐😐💙 this movie is very different to me. so I have another place. I will never forget this movie. This scene, this music, I will never forget this pessimism. I always have in my mind, always in my heart. A very special film for me. I will never forget Adele...

That guy respected and cared about Adele's ideas and personality, things that Emma never did. I love how he chase her at the end. He would make her better giving her all that positive emotions she never felt from nobody else.

I completely agree with you. Even as a lesbian, I thought Adele and Samir (the guy who chased her) would be something nice to see happen and possibly grow. Don't get me wrong I loved Adele and Emma but it just wasn't right for them in my personal opinion.

I’ve taken that walk. Wasn’t wearing blue and it wasn’t such style as an art show. But Ive felt every step of that sidewalk to somewhere I rather wouldn’t be.

I like to think the actor guy would someday find Adele again, kind of how Adele and Emma crossed paths a few times before finding each other. The open ending leaves me so tender-hearted. The blue in her dress,,, for so much of the film blue is considered Emma’s color but for Adele to take it back as her own for that last scene is such a good move.

This ending made me sad.

This sound finished me . Makes me feel the lived and most of all the unlived ones.

I could feel Adele's pain, super great acting and actress. OMG

How did i never realized that she’s wearing a blue dress...all the meaning we can interpret with that!!!

She is finally ready to love her self. This is how great artists are born. Heartbreak, and then resilience of self. This is a happy ending.

I feel much better after reading most of the comments here.. Giving me more hope and reasons to believe that Adele is gonna be okay. For years, I couldn't quite figure out how to move on and accept its ending.. I am hurting for both of them.. I am hurting for Emma because of what Adele did to her.. and I am crushed and hurting for Adele knowing that she's still as broken as she was that night they broke up.. I have been trying to find any alternative ending of this film, a book, a short story, any thing that could put an endimg to the torture I have felt after watching this for the first time but sadly, there are none to be found..

this scene is fucking sad but it's true, strong and pure and i loved this film. a sad , sincere finale, that speaks to you inner self powefully. great film

Imo the point is that she didn’t need to be in love with Samir. He was part of the theme of how people are infatuated with someone and chase them. Every character did that but Adele needed to be on her own.

I like to think that she wore the blue dress knowing it is over with Emma. There was a finality in the cafe scene. She wore blue to the art showcase wearing the love it represented to them both while they were together, and even now still representing the passion people can share. She turned the corner, along with her relationship with Emma to the hand-beaten drums she heard when she first laid eyes on her. Indicating the beginning to a new relationship. And so Samir found Adele. It purposely wasn't shown, because it didn't happen that day, but days, if not years later. As for whether Adele fell in love with Samir, or he was the reason she fell for someone else is up to our imaginations :)

Never thought that I would feel heartbroken watching a gay movie... This sure is something too realistic...

Even if the movie ends in a sad ending, in life the common interview and good to watch each other laugh laughing :)

I'm surprised that no one else seems to have interpreted the scene the same way I did! To me, the film is about loneliness. In highschool Adèle is popular because she is pretty, but she has no true friends, as they quickly ostracize her when they think she's gay. She's also forced to keep her relationship with Emma a secret from her family. After moving in with her, she feels like Emma ignores her and gives more attention to Lise and her career. Desperate to feel loved, she sleeps with her colleague and Emma kicks her out. To be honest, I was worried she was going to attempt suicide during the scene when she swims out into the ocean. At the end she desperately tries to reconnect with Emma, only to find out that Emma does not love her. At final scene in the gallery, Adèle realizes that she is completely alone and does not belong there, that the chapter of her life defined by Emma has come to a close. Little does she know, Samir actually is paying attention to her, but chases in the wrong direction, leaving us to wonder how different Adèle's future might be if Samir had just decided on the other direction. But it's at least partly a hopeful message: even when we think we are alone, there is usually someone whom we don't realize cares about us. Of course there is no single correct interpretation; ambiguity is common to all great storytelling!

Apparently in the Graphic Novel version Adele(Clementine)dies of a seizure after her drug overdose so you're not far off the mark if you think she'll commit suicide. Open endings scream at you to take them how you want. I took the painting of Adele being put up for auction as that Emma chapter in her being reduced to cabin fodder for public consumption.

It shows that Adele finally moved away from Emma and decided to care about herself instead of her. However, it also shows that her love for Emma still exists by wearing a blue dress, which symbolizes when they first met (when Emma had her hair dyed blue).

To me this is only a one side story. Love story of Adele. We don’t know the story of Emma. At the end, Adele wore blue dress, blue nail color. Emily effected by Emma’s presence slightly (Not how Adele effected by Emma’s presence at the beginning). Blue become warmest only for Adele not for Emma. Based of Adele’s story, at the end Emma downs not love her anymore. That’s what I understood

Correct. BITWC is filmed subjectively through the eyes of Adele charting her long term relationship with her first love, Emma from start to finish. Even though it's a lesbian movie, BITWC is such a universal visual experience that any teenager or adult can relate to, no matter their sexual orientation. It's what makes this film stand out head and shoulders above the rest of its genre. Question. Did you want Emma's side of the story.
