You forgot sweet. The thing that made the whole show work, the glue, was Steve Carell. The fact that he wanted to be liked and loved more than a boss was what made him endearing. You have funny shows like Seinfeld but they dont have a loyal following like the office because the central character was funny but not endearing.

That's the problem with the U.S. version of The Office. It's too schmaltzy. The original BBC The Office was raw and often times uncomfortable because it hit close to home for a lot of people. The humor was sometimes very subtle.

Exactly. As funny as it is, and with all the times Michael is shown to be insensitive and lacking any self awareness, they resisted the urge to make him a total clown all the time. There is a good guy in there somewhere. The episode where he's out with (I think, it's been a minute) a sales rep from another company and Jim and Pam tell him he's doing great and he realizes it's "a date" and becomes "Date Mike" is one of the best examples of this.

Back in 2021 my ex wife left me. I fought so hard to save the marriage. I lost 50 pounds, went to therapy once every two weeks, and did everything I could to respect her space while also trying to change for us. she never came home, but one day a coworker said “everyday I see the pain you are in, and my heart breaks for you, but I want you to know that I am proud of you! Look at you! Know that you are worth it” And that one genuine hug, and comment really helped me fight alot of inner demons. I now am so much happier because I stuck it out, but man that dude really made an impact on me.

What stood out to me in this episode is when Michael asks, “How much?” Not many people acknowledged her art, or when they did- they gave it crappy reviews. But at the end, her art was the only one in the studio that made a sale (even though it was not on sale and Michael insisted to buy the painting).

Which so many times is dictated to the viewer instead of just letting them experience it themselves, like art is supposed to do (there is the artists intent, and the viewers perception. Neither can dictate to the other what is more superior, regardless of how often that simple concept tends to be bastardized).

You saw him as unlikable (fair).... in The Office world many people also saw him as unlikeable, but the best part of all that, the best part about Michael Scott... he didn't know it. He never set out with ill intent (minus Toby). He was oblivious to his words and actions and its a big reason why he was so great. The complete idiot. We even see some in this very scene.... its touching, a nice moment within the entire show and Pam needed it. But which painting did he focus on and purchase... the building he manages LOL.

The best thing here is that he is REALLY looking at her work. Not just saying “oh these are nice” he is looking at the details and asking questions. He sees things that she has done that he knows he could not, and is honestly impressed by them. You can tell by her posture at first that she is just waiting for him to make a joke or say something mean, and slowly realize that he is not making fun of her, and really means what he is saying. When he tells her how proud he is of her it just overwhelms her. Such a great scene.

Side note. There's a deleted scene where Michael asks everyone if they ever imagined having a different boss and everyone says yes. It's another amazing scene revealing just how awesome of a boss Michael really was.

That was always the key to his character. Everything he did was from the heart; he always meant well even if he was a buffoon or insensitive or tone-deaf. This is also how he differed from David Brent of the UK Office, and even the Michael Scott character of the first season, which was much closer to David Brent. The writers heavily retooled the character after the first season because Michael just wasn't likeable enough to carry the series, and they couldn't build a multi-season comedy around a main character that nobody could empathize with.

Ryan said to the business school students that the paper company doesn't have any future which broke Micheal's heart and for Pam that Oscar boyfriend said her drawings is not art broke hers. But how Michael praises her art and realizes that her art is made on paper and I think it's their companies paper brought closure to Michael that the company still had a future.

Regarding a poorly attended gallery show leading to an artist quitting... pretty much only in fiction. For most artists, particularly freehand drawers, rendering in paint, pencil, charcoal, etc. is just a way one manages life, more language than performance. But pop culture's rendering of visual artists has no patience for that reality. Instead every artist is depicted either excessively ego fragile (Pam) or a sociopath who obsesses over others' failure to recognize their genius.

@@cat-mh2wp Yeah, but either he or his boyfriend then dissed the art piece, and Pam overheard it. So even though he came, he wasn't really there. Contrast this with Michael - not only did he come because he *wanted* to, rather than just doing it because he was asked, he also genuinely appreciated the art.

It is heartwarming to witness the moment in which Michael and Pam realized that their seemingly mundane 9 to 5 job, was after all, part of something bigger. Like the quiet and humble piece of paper that manifest the creative thoughts of humanity; the rare instances when humans got closer to the truth.

This is such an amazing scene, brings me nearly to tears, just like Pam lol. Roy shows up to give her the impression that he cares, when he obviously doesn’t, saying all the wrong things, and it just come across as fake. “Your art was the prettiest art, of all the art”. “How bout this huh, i show up with my brother, but no one from work is here? Thats pretty cool huh?” “Its cool if i go right? I mean I looked at all of them?” That 2nd one blows my mind at how apathetic it is. And it blows my mind even more that he thought he was truly being supportive. Then Oscar and his SO play the harsh critics and say some hard things to hear. Her art isnt bold, sure, they’re not courageous. One of them is a stapler. But still, it hurt to hear im sure. And then Micheal… he says all the right things, and the best part about it is that he doesn’t know Pam was at such a low at that point. He was saying all the right things, by accident. He wasnt putting on an act, he genuinely loved it. He was genuinely proud. Pam just looks at him the whole time and its the sweetest thing. “Thank you…” “-what?” Lol as real as it gets. What an angel, a dumb angel.

Josh Wiseman it’s a very strong representation of who Michael is. He always sees the positive in things even if he lacks self awareness at times. So the fact that he got humiliated at Ryan’s class didn’t stop him from being Michael at Pams art show. It’s actually a really deep scene in context for both characters.

Honestly, I broke down crying during this scene. It is the moment when Michael's development as a character completes itself. It is in this scene that we realize how Michael genuinely loves everybody in his office, and is never afraid to show it, whereas all the others, who claim to be better than Michael, actually are afraid to show their emotions to the detriment of their happiness. Sure, Michael is very awkward and childish, but all this comes from the desire to be accepted and from a tough childhood. And, as Ricky Gervais put it, there is a piece of Michael Scott in each of us. We all, sometimes, are silly in the attempt to be liked by others.

There was one time Michael was going to prank Toby, the police got called and when Toby was in serious danger of getting nailed for drug possession when it was not drugs, Michael stepped in and saved him.... begrudgingly. And very unapologetic afterwards. There was, somewhere in there, a shred of human compassion in Michael for Toby.

When I do an illustration for a client I'll make some changes or corrections. I usually don't tell the client. Those changes are usually for me and to make me satisfied with the work. I'm sure nobody will ever notice but sometimes that client will see it...I don't know how...and they'll say "I'm glad you did that. Makes the whole thing work." And I'm just amazed...the rest of my day is made.

@@Farbar1955 Ohhh I love to do that! I always add extra little things in, especially when it's for someone that's grieving. Within 3 years, we had 4 cats dying in our neighbourhood (all because of kidneyproblems and one got run over.) 3 people appreciated a painting (for free.) I made sure that each and every painting was special for the owner. The first owner was a massive fan of Ajax football, so I drew his cat, walking a golden stairs, up to the orange-pink clouds in sunset, where the Greek God Ajax was welcoming him with his hand stretched out towards him, as if to say; "You're one of us now, you can live with the gods, here." The second cat wasn't painted, I did print out some photographs I had of her. The third one, was painted in the space-universe, playing with stars and planets, as if they were knitting-balls of yarn. And the fourth one was a Japanese cat, with the name Yuki Mura. The owner was a very organised man and he loved Japanese culture. Now, if you look up the name Yuki Mura in kanji, youll see that it's similar to a cat-face, on the left. So I painted her fur-pattern, with the kanji on top of that and added two little ears to the 'Yuki"-cat shape. A very abstract painting, he very much appreciated it. :) I'll put the Yuki up here btw, I hope it works. It's one of the spellings you can use, there's several: 雪
