The Blacksmith - Sarah North clawhammer banjo

Музыка

Guysss... look! It’s the first of what I am going to try SO HARD to ensure are weekly video uploads. You know what? I was so touched when you guys commented on that last video for my history class, insisting that I should leave it up because it was real. You were RIGHT. To be honest, I think I needed a reminder of what exactly old time is: real music, played by real people, in real life. First takes, kids, exhausted mama eyes---and chewed fingernails; is the banjo the only instrument a crucial part of which you can accidentally eat??---all of it. It’s okay. We’re posting and playing this because it’s one of the most beautifully human things we can do. ❤️❤️ More to follow, warts and all-😉
P.S. Learned this from a recording of the illustrious Jake Book. 🙌🏻

I post videos of just practicing too. It's useful for me to go back and hear how I played before and what I have changed.

I've only ever heard this song in the context of medieval music performances. It's refreshing to hear it on the banjo.

Sarah, keep these coming where studies and mom duties allow! Your frailing banjo arrangement of The Blacksmith is great, and another take on this lovely old folk tune, which I believe is English in origin. I read your comment and you're quite right, keeping things authentic is the way to go. I've noticed in some of your past videos how you sometimes need to get into the "groove" of a song by way of introduction, allowing the tune to develop naturally and I like that too. For me it's even better to make mistakes to show it's all live and real. I have a CD of old American banjo tunes, field recordings by country pickers that have many mistakes and I love it even more, not least because I make enough myself! There's another arrangement of The Blacksmith that's very special too, so special I feel compelled to refer you to because it's beyond perfect. So checkout a Welsh band called Fernhill, and the wonderful Julie Murphy singing The Blacksmith. If you are moved as much as I was on first hearing, it will remain forever.

Oh my goodness, I just checked out Fernhill and I am in love!! Thank you for that reference. I have a particular soft spot for the Welsh language and I am thrilled out how much new music I now have to go listen to!

@@mesarah011 Thrilled you like it. I know how musicians are asked "listen to this, listen to that" and one feels an obligation, but there are exceptions, this being one. You might pleased to know I also refer my banjo students to your performances on Y/Tube because I believe you succeed in capturing the essence of your chosen tunes and the instrument. Not everyone can do this.

There is no banjo player I'm as inspired to play like as you. Not Laurel Premo, not Cahalen Morrison. This is so nice.

You know, when you sporadically post videos it’s like a very special and rare gift, and when you post weekly uploads we get to enjoy great music more often, both of these are great options, so in either case thank you!

Thank you! Aah, I love Andy Irvine so much. I'm actually working on a banjo version of The Blind Harper which I learned from a fabulous video of him playing it (I'd never heard the song before); hoping to post it soon! ^_^

Very nice. Lately my kiddo has been playing "percussion" on the pot while I play, it definitely makes playing interesting...

Aww ^_^ All of my littles used to do that, too, haha! When my middle daughter was a toddler, she especially liked to put her hand on the strings over the head while I was playing, immediately dampening the music but leaving the rhythm. It was actually kind of a fun effect--"interesting", for sure!

This is, once again, wonderful so thank you so much Sarah. I suppose you have heard Planxty's Blacksmith - in case not try it. No banjo but an amazing mandolin/bouzouki duet (a live 2004 version here : kzread.info/dash/bejne/iH-TxcOqiMvIiLg.html). I learned it from them, though my version is far far away from yours in terms of musicality. Definitively love your playing and singing.
