The Black Legend: Are the Spanish Evil? - Pixel History EXTRA

The Spanish have long held a contentious place within the European landscape. Often regarded with contempt and considered as a different people altogether, particularly northern, Protestant regions regard them as evil incarnate and the root of a great cause of hurt. This was later described by Spanish historians as the Black Legend; a historical narrative that - in their eyes unjustly - made their nation look far worse than they deserved.
Where did all this hatred come from? And more importantly, was it justified?

You just scratched the surface of the topic. Hispanic American territories haven't been able to recover since the fall of the Spanish Empire because, 1) Britishs and Americans sacked all the gold and silver from Hispanic countries (also the French in Mexico), 2) they destroyed all local mining and industry as well as the money machines to make sure those territories will never ever recover. 3) British liberal banks installed themselves in all Hispanic American territories to extend Anglo-Saxon imperialism by means of economic warfare. 4) Protestant religious institutions and political puppets-founded with American money-proliferated throughout Hispanic countries with the aim to destroy Catholicism and therefore Hispanic culture and legacy.

Your video was both accurate and impartial, which is a rarity in this subject, even within Spain, where the majority of the Spanish have come to believe the very lies that were conjured against them.

The problem with the black legends is that some negative stereotypes still exist to this day. For example that spanish people is lazy, which has extend to Latin Americans.

Read "Imperiofobia y leyenda negra" by María Elvira Roca Barea. It's not a Pink Legend, it's freaking facts. You can't look at the past history with present lenses. Every other empire after the Spanish one was way way worse. The Spanish Empire was pioneer in many aspects. Ideology, education, science, commerce, human rights, literature, etc. Were there people who committed atrocities? Of course, but not with the support of the Spanish Crown and those who were caught were judged accordingly.

A bit off the colonisation subject but the book 'the Myth of the Andalusian Paradise' (Fernandez Morera) based around the time of the Spanish inquisition tells of the rivalry between England and Spain as superpowers and how the invention of the printing press in England was used in a propaganda war to portray the Spanish as evil - historical discourse can stick over the centuries. Another good watch is the 'Myth of the Spanish Inquisition' (BBC 1994 Timewatch) (on youtube) complete with a Monty Python send-up of the inquisition. None of these 'black legends' can explain the (generally) culturally rich shared relationship the Spanish and Latin Americans have with each today (Latin Americans do have a significant amount of indigenous blood). This relationship can only have been built up organically over the centuries. The proof's in the pudding as they say.

I always feel like this is a fight between Spanish and English people. But... Why don't Latin Americans have a seat in this discussion table? I mean, we were also a side in that conflict. It is like leaving the Chinese out of a discussion about the Pacific War between Americans and Japanese.

Hipstorian I love your video on the Black Legend I thinks it’s a relevant subject especially since the Black Legend is also associated with the anti-Christopher Columbus movement. There are not a lot of theses accurate videos.

It was very balanced and interesting. I just wo der why the i digenous Latin American people still blame the Spaniards for their dituation. The Black Legend seems to be just more ctedible than the oposite view. It hurts me having to think this way being Spanish myself...😥

Keep it up. I always like these videos. But the videos could use simpler terminology. Lots of big words makes it hard to digest for it to make sense before you move on to another point
