The Bizarre World of Quantum Physics

The most important confusion that people have with Quantum Physics is that they don't realise that the indeterminacy and uncertainty of the quantum world does not negate the determinacy and certainly of the macroscopic world. The implications of this observation are that Quantum Physics cannot be used to argue the case that causation does not exist at the macroscopic level.

Great job Mr Taimur, I have leaned a lot from you. My basic framework of understanding about free will. Free will and determinism has long been debated and still no consensus philosophically, however, the recent scientific theories seem to point definitively towards consciousness and the essential role of free will. I like to give just a brief overview of how our brain works to understand and make sense of the the things in the outer world. We have five main senses, they convey crude data to different concerning areas of the brain where this crude information is processed and goes to other association areas of the brain where further processing occurs and once a holistic picture is formed, brain interpret it according. At that time we become conscious of whatever we perceived. These different cognitive and neural processed occur at our subconscious level. Our brain then takes necessary action which determines our behaviour. For example, when I see my cat, I only become conscious of it after my brain goes through lots of processes subconsciously first. The signals go to primary visual centre where just the lines and sketches are perceived, then it goes to secondary visual areas where further processing occur, the it goes to association area which gets information from my memory area, then some emotional value is attached to it and I then become aware of a cat which is white and brown, it is my pet and there are happy emotions attached to it and lift her in my lap ( my behaviour). Where, how and why we become conscious science so far is not able to give us an answer. The classical physics (Newtonian) says that all the atoms, particles have there fixed place they move around and we determine their future movement by knowing the current position, velocity etc, so everything is deterministic and all the brain processes being physical also deterministic and consciousness is nothing but the emergent property of the brain processes and does not have any causal role and free will is an illusion. Quantum theory, being the most successful one, says there is no discrete atoms and their orbits, they don’t have any definitive place and movements. The are just the probabilities waves, a potentiality which only becomes actualised once someone consciously measure them. So making something happen is dependent of what someone chooses. If a physicist decides to measure the radioactive decay of an atom, he will set up a apparatus accordingly, his choice to do that very experiment is totally free, he could chose to measure some other property. According to this theory, his choice is free as no physical law can determine this. Then nature gives its response randomly so either the radioactive particles will decay in that period or not. But this response from nature is not totally random but there are some statistical rules to it. So new physics gives lot of evidence in favour of some free will. Recent neuroscience, by using fMRI (scan of the brain while it’s doing a certain job) also supports free will by providing evidence that we also have an in built mechanism for suppressing, ignoring or overriding its initial response. In case of strong emotions, anger, fear there is increased activity in amygdala but after half a second this activity is decreasing and strong activity is seem in our frontal area suggesting a reverse mechanism so we calm down instead of responding back aggressively.

The world of quantum physics has always fascinated me. This is itself thought-provoking that whenever it comes to cosmos, on macro scale predictability and discovery with scientific accuracy is evident. But on micro scale, like atom, uncertainty rules. Without conscious observation a particle acts like wave but when concious observation applies, it acts like a particle. This phenomena opens up debate on conscious observation with respect to physical reality. Interestingly, islam has references about it like in aytul kursi, Allah is the ultimate observer. Further, in Judaism text, there is a reference of observer effect when prophet Musa talks to Allah. Great Ashfaq Ahmed sahab also wrote about quantum physics in his iconic series Man chalay ka soda where firdous jamal and khayam sarhadi engages in a eye opening conversation on quantum physics. In short, it's been a century since quantum physics continues to baffle scientific community. Indeed there is a lot to unearth.

It was an interesting lecture. However, I think your distinction between theory and law is categorically incorrect. You equate law to an equation (or relation) and a theory to an explanation. While the law analogy is acceptable, the theory one is not. First of all science is a study of 'how' and not 'why'. Thus a theory is a model (not reality) that explains something reductively in some other unexplained assumptions. All theories have a resolution in their 'how' explanations. Consider the case of gravitation that you cited. The universal law of gravitation posits the existence of a force between objects which could be computed using a simple equation (the inverse square law). However, it does not explain why this force exists. Now consider, the general theory of relativity, it models gravitation as curvature of spacetime (modeled as a metric tensor). It also provides equations to compute forces between objects instead of positing a force, it posits a curved spacetime. Once could derive the universal law of gravitation using the field equations of general relativity. But is it the ultimate explanation? It is not. It certainly has more explanatory power (resolution under its own assumptions) than newton's universal gravitation but it cannot explain its own assumptions (i.e why spacetime bends in presence of matter). Thus the difference between the two models is the resolution of explanations under their assumptions. Both of these models could be an approximation of some other model that might have different assumptions and thus explains general relativity more simply (like loop quantum gravity or other emergent spacetime theories) plus some phenomenon beyond the reach of general relativity. Thus, all laws + theories are essentially models of explanations under unexplained assumptions, that fit the empirical data better and better until new anomalies emerge that challenge the predictions of the model. Empirical reality under various constraints and within the explanatory limits of an explaining model, behaves as if the models were true - making models (and therefore laws and theories) approximate truth. But we know the models are not true because there exist phenomenon or extremes where the models don't make sense. An interesting question is that if there really exists a representable model that can completely explain all phenomenon (i.e the 'how' of the phenomenon). Which is kind of completely on faith (and induction I suppose), where we are assuming that the regularities of the world can be comprehended by the human mind using language and representation.

I would recommend Dr. Taimur and anyone interested to read "Existential Physics" by Dr. Sabine Hossenfelder. In that book, she debunks many philosophical ideas which were a result of the indeterminacy in quantum physics. In short, quantum physics is missing some links between the fundamental forces of universe. For example, in the classical mechanics, there is a law of gravitation. Similarly, there must be a law to describe the relation of the quantum particles with gravity, but there isn't. It's a matter of experimentation and observation using more advanced equipment and we can derive these laws one by one for the quantum world. When we have those laws, nothing will remain undetermined. This is the view of many scientists. And as has happened always in the history of human thought, there is countless opposition to this view by "theorists" who claim objectivity in their own right.

How matter and energy are created at first place from nothingness. Cause and effect chain disappears at nothingness. Quantum physics is still physical world, not opening door to metaphysics. @@saimch.9388 You are right, that scientists do not know how energy can come from nothingness. But in my opinion quantum physics should not be the science which opens doors to metaphysics as it is assumed by many philosophers nowadays to do so. The fact that scientists can't explain creation from nothingness is enough to deductively conclude the possibility of a metaphysical reality. And we shouldn't really use quantum mechanics to deduce things which aren't implied in the physics to begin with.

So we are standing at the point that how to look into nothingness (spiritual world, عالم امر عالم ناسوت etc), from where matter energy is actually created at first place. So door to metaphysics is closed for physics. Then how to reach to God which is metaphysical? So whole debate ends at that point or say, new debate starts at that point. The problem with science is its current methodology- it only takes reality which is physical, which can be perceived, seem, smelt and be reduced. As you did whole video on quantum physics, I like to mention Pauli, the noble price winner, one of the founders of quantum physics, Einstein would call him his “spiritual son”, he himself was not satisfied, like many others, about the picture of reality current physics tried to explain.

Uncertainty/unpredictability is minuscle at bigger scales. When you're sitting on a chair, there's an uncertainty in your position. However, it's so small that we cannot measure or feel it. Uncertainties are usually of the order 10^-34 m. Quantum mechanics is completely compatible with classical mechanics. We don't need to consider uncertainties when we are dealing with bigger scales because they are negligible. Uncertainties show up at quantum level just because the scale is smaller. You may look for Ehrenfest Theorem.

Its a, measurement problem. Its NOT the observer collapsing wave function of particle to act as particle. When we measure substomic level particles,,,,, we depend on light photons which thelselves are, massless particles . As photons hit that subatomic particle it pushes and changes, its pisition........ GOT IT..... MEASUREMENT PROBLEM NOT OBSERVER OR CONSCIOUSNESS MAKING IT TO ACT AS PARTICLE

Thinking about quantum physics we are still thinking about physical. Matter and energy are both physical world things. So Quantum physics is not META PHYSICS. Do you agree with me? So whatever we will discover in future, it will be physical world. What is meta physical world and who will ever explain this? This question is still unanswerable?

At Quantum level, our body atoms don’t die, they just change form. So we don’t die, our body atoms just change from one type of energy to another type of energy. This iis comforting to know that after death our energy still stay in this universe. Well if it is true then energy can change its form again . I think that’s what Islam and other religions says as well

When I first learnt about the mysteries of subatomic world, how particles can behave as having a mass and then mysteriously as waves, and then learnt about the double slit experiment and that there was a noble prize awaiting for someone to solve the mysteries, I was deeply fascinated. Just by observing the behaviour of particles you influence their behaviour. It seems madness. I agree with your summary that quantum world is still a newish science hence why we haven’t yet been able to explain these behaviours. What I was always annoyed about was how dare us Muslims would separate science from religion when religion tells you that the creator you worship is the creator who made all the universe including the laws that govern its behaviour, so then why wouldn’t you try to ponder and contemplate upon the creation of our creator ? Also, I think the Quran talks about two kinds of ilm’s. Ilmulghaib and ilmushhahadah. What we can observe with our rational and intellectual faculties and one that we can’t. Whereas the creator is the ‘aalim’ of both. Aalimul ghaib wa Aalimush shahadah!
